Tales of the Cocktail ’09: Sampling the Possibilities
Planning on skipping Tales of the Cocktail this year? If you are a bar owner, mixologist or home enthusiast with severe passion for mixing up great cocktails you would have to be out of your mind to miss the greatest cocktail show on earth. That may sound a little extreme, but my inbox has been stuffed round the clock with all the wonderful events, tasting rooms and invites from brands with sensational products that make mixing and shaking easier, tastier and all around awe-inspiring.
Martin Miller Gin celebrates its 10th anniversary by introducing a special strength, limited edition bottling of this unique gin. Those in attendance at the Saturday seminar will have the opportunity to speak to creators, Martin Miller and David Bromige, as well as have their special bottles signed. Martin Miller also has a tasting room prior to this event, Thursday, July 9, where all those tipplers can enjoy experiencing the divergent flavors of American and British cocktail culture at the hands of Ben Reed and Jon Santer.
Gin is a rising star in the cocktail world. With the addition of botanicals to add character to ordinary vodka the possibilities for exciting drink application moves to another sphere of exploration. Bols Genever sponsors ‘The Cocktails that Made Gin Famous’ and offers a tasting room with detailed information from the Lucas Bols Master Distiller Piet van Leijenhorst. There you may also savor the flavor of Bols Genever cocktails the way they were meant to be enjoyed.
Piedmont Distillers is a small distillery in North Carolina with seven employees, yet they are traveling to Tales of the Cocktail this July to open up a tasting room for all to sample their “Catdaddy Carolina Moonshine & Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon”. As the title clearly states, this is “Not Your Pappy’s Shine.” This is small batch, hand crafted spirit from one-of-a-kind secret recipes using state of the art distillation. Piedmont Distillers describes their spirit as a little sweet with a hint of spice, but their open tasting room will let you decide.
Pisco is a powerful spirit regaining popularity over the last few years. Grand Sierpe Pisco has helped fuel that resurgence with its sleek modern packaging and “smooth taste and tantalizing bite” according to The Workshop, sponsor of two Tales of the Cocktail seminars. Learn about Gran Sierpe before you head to TOTC and sign up for either of the two seminars: “The Fine Art of Banging Out the Drinks like a Maniac: Great Bars around the World and Throughout History that Make Great Cocktails Fast” with Philip Duff and Dushan Zaric. “Liquid Nudging”, will have Philip Duff and Angus Winchester demonstrating the art and psychology of cocktailing.
Want to know what the great bar chefs and mixologist use in their cocktails for the freshest fruit flavor when fruit just doesn’t seem to be in season? They take a cue from the pastry chef’s kitchen and use Boiron fruit purees. Boiron fruit puree touts a portfolio of 50 flavors with the highest quality, freshest flavor and reliable results. That is what every mixologist looks for when putting together a cocktail. Boiron is working ‘behind the scenes’ at many of the events and seminars at Tales of the Cocktail. They will also be mixing up some very special non-alcoholic Mocktails Sunday afternoon, just in time for happy travels home.
This is just a miniscule sampling of the flood of information you’ll be missing if you skip TOTC this year. Tales of the Cocktail has so many events going on it would be impossible to sample them all. But don’t let that stop you from arriving early, staying late, and learning much. Educate yourself and be in the know. Sign up for Tales of the Cocktail 2009 today.
