Tropical Theme Drink Recipes a Breeze with Cruzan Coconut Rum
Cruzan Coconut Rum makes an excellent addition to the summer rum mix. The scent is light coconut with a very sun tan lotion aura about it bringing with it the instant feel of the tropics. There is little to no alcohol burn in the nose. The taste is extremely sweet. Cruzan Coconut Rum could almost fool someone into thinking it is liqueur instead of Rum, but that seems to be the trend these days with flavored versions of base spirits. The alcohol content is lower than classic rum, coming in at 27.5%. There is also not as much coconut flavor as expected with a slight sharpness around the edges. The purpose of flavored rum though is not tasting it neat. It is pure mixer all the way.
Lada-Colada – created by The Intoxicologist
3 ounces Cruzan Coconut Rum
1 ounce Vita Coco 100% Coconut Water
1 ounce Pineapple Juice
1 ounce Apricot Juice
1-1/2 ounce Half & Half
Maraschino Cherry Garnish
Combine liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds. Strain into a large martini glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.
Since most cocktail lounges and bars no longer offer blender drinks unless they actually have a ‘slurpie’ machine (which more often than not contains the traditional Margarita), this straight up version of the Pina Colada is an excellent alternative. This also eliminates blender mess for the at home bartender who wants the taste of the tropics without all the clean up time. Using Vita Coco 100% Coconut Water rather than traditional Coco Lopez cuts down on a tremendous amount of calories and added sugar.
Cruzan Rum is offered in a variety of flavors. While only the Coconut flavor was sampled for this taste test a few other tropical flavors that would mix well for summer drink recipes would include the Cruzan Pineapple Rum and Cruzan Mango Rum. The Cruzan Rum website offers many cocktail recipes using these rum flavors and others for your sipping pleasure this summer and for many seasons to come. Look for the Cruzan Pina Colada Martini using a combination of Coconut and Pineapple Rum on the Cruzan Rum site.
