Jack Daniel’s Gets Pink: Black Raspberry Margarita

Who says Jack Daniel’s has to be all about hard slamming, down and dirty drinking?  The Black Raspberry Margarita makes an extremely sweet drink with the ratios recommended by Chambord.  My recommendation: Skip the Sprite and top with two parts Club Soda to help balance the sugar factor.  All in all this makes a fabulous cocktail for all the female Jack fans who prefer a little ‘pretty in pink’.

Absolut Boston Tea Flavor Parties Well with Drink Recipes

ABSOLUT Boston bottle line up - photo courtesy representatives of Absolut Vodka

When Absolut recently announced the release of its new ‘Cities’ edition, Absolut Boston with black tea and elderflower influences, my first thought was this bottling just had to be good.  Tea inspiration in cocktail recipes may be seen by the occurrence of cocktail competitions that embrace tea as the main ingredient with base spirit as the secondary factor.  Many inspired recipe creations stem from tea blends and evolve into cocktails or Mocktails depending on the bartender or mixologist who ‘razzle dazzles’ and tweaks the recipe to high perfection ultimately landing said recipe on a cocktail menu in renowned hot spots around the world.  Tea companies have come on board with recipe creations beyond the hot tea cup or iced tea glass and now serve up sophistication within wine and martini glasses complete with garnishes beyond the lemon wedge.  Absolut Boston took the idea a step further by infusing black tea with elderflower within the vodka for a flavor packed spirit ready to create a cocktail with little fuss and a whole lot of flavor.

Absolut Boston Neat - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinThe spirit itself smells exactly like clean, barely sweetened sharp black tea.  There is little burn on the nose.  Sipping neat there is little sweetness, but no sugary feel.  Some flavored vodkas carry significant sweetness in the flavor.  This is definitely not the case with Absolut Boston.  The feel is light.  Elderflower flavor flutters out around the edges with tepid burn.  It is more warmth that burn, but maybe a slight sting.  Then again, remember this is sipping vodka neat.  This would be quite nice with an ice cube to soften the edge without adding any additional flavor.  However, quite often I don’t mind my vodka straight or my spirits warm.  The essence of Absolut Boston hits its flavor target.  Shaken with ice to chill and served straight up would do rather nicely.  If you need just a hint of sweetness, my suggestion would be to add an eighth to quarter ounce of simple syrup to keep the authentic influences of the spirit or embellish them with the same measurements of St-Germain Liqueur.

Before playing with Absolut Boston for cocktail creation purposes I did a little research…in the pantry.  It made sense to me to look at the array of tea boxes with their multitudes of flavors to see exactly what flavors are paired together with black tea.  Tea companies research consumer likes and dislikes and market products accordingly.  So, if you have a bottle of Absolut Boston at home take a cue from tea companies and what they pair with black tea compared with flavors you already like.

Muddle fresh raspberries and grenadine in a mixing glass.  Add Absolut Boston and ice.  Shake to blend.  Strain into a Collins glass over fresh ice.  Top with two ounces club soda.  Garnish with fresh raspberries.  If fresh raspberries are unavailable, try using 1/2 ounce Chambord liqueur in place of the raspberries.  Taste for sweetness before adding in the grenadine.

Monumentally Raspberry Boston keeps the distinct flavor of Absolut Boston’s black tea roots while exploring the possibilities of fresh fruit inclusion.  Bright and lively without too much fuss.  Muddling takes a little more effort, but the payoff is usually worth it in the wonderful fresh taste.  Raspberry pairs wonderfully with the black tea and light elderflower flavors.

The glowing effect of the Boston Apricot Sidecar cocktail turned out beautifully.  This is a loose adaptation of a traditional sidecar using vodka as the base spirit with Apricot Brandy inclusion.  Absolut Boston tea flavor still shines, but this time with some gorgeous vanilla highlights that no doubt stem from the Apricot Brandy and lemon combination.  Apricot and orange flavors can both be found frequently in black tea blends making them perfect choices for pairing with Absolut Boston.

Ah, the Absolut Boston equivalent to a pomegranate Cosmo; the cocktail of girlfriends the world over.  Surely the numbers wouldn’t lie and a healthy percentage of women have sampled a variety of Sex and the City Cosmopolitan cocktails at one time or another.  Absolut Boston gives the Cosmo new dimension and complexity.  This lovely cocktail recipe turns out not too tart, is an easy mixer without the inclusion of specialty ingredients, fresh fruit or muddling and keeps the black tea influence flowing in the finish.  Pomegranate pairs charmingly well with black tea and may be found within many popular cocktails throughout the country.  The color makes this recipe a winner for the holiday season with its nice festive hue, too.

Low Calorie Tequila Cocktail Recipe: Mang-Oro

The scent of Oro de Jalisco Tequila comes through as well as a hint in the taste.  There is just enough to let one know Tequila is exactly the flavor of the day, but not too much to overwhelm the entirety of the drink.  Mango rounds out the orange juice giving the Mang-Oro terrific flavor, yet still comes in at approximately 96 calories.  Make this a Tequila Sunset type cocktail by adding fresh blueberry and raspberry puree to the bottom of the martini glass before straining in the liquid for beautiful effect and minimal calorie bump.

Buffalo Trace Bourbon: Sophisticated Sipper, Cocktail Diverse

As I sit sipping a Buffalo Trace Manhattan looking at a nearly empty bottle with Bourbon Heritage Month almost over the thought that keeps skipping through my head…thank goodness Buffalo Trace Bourbon is Buffalo Trace Bourbon Neat - photo copyright Cheri Loughlinavailable locally.  Not quite nationwide, but they’re working on it I hear.

Buffalo Trace Bourbon’s aroma is a little dry with a hint of cherry, orange and suggestion of cinnamon.  Possibly a wee bit of vanilla.  Not sugary, but not the slightest insinuation of bitterness either.  Come to think of it, the longer Buffalo Trace Bourbon sits in the glass the more aroma of clove comes to the forefront.  The flavor comes across highly sophisticated yet not pretentious or overwhelming.  The flavors meld in such a way that each is distinct without overtaking the other.  Buffalo Trace Bourbon comes together in perfect harmony, ideally balanced, beautifully blended.  This bourbon no doubt has been crafted to satisfy the palate of cutting edge bourbon enthusiasts and seasoned consumers alike.

Bourbon is often consumed straight, on the rocks or with a single ice cube, but in this day and age when cocktails reign supreme and classic drinks have come full circle in popular culture, it makes sense to shake things up a bit and pull a little Buffalo Trace Bourbon into the mix.

Brighton Punch

Brighton Punch - Bourbon Cocktail - Buffalo Trace - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin1-1/2 parts Cognac

1-1/2 parts Buffalo Trace Bourbon

1-1/2 parts Benedictine

2-1/2 parts Pineapple Juice

2 parts Lemon Juice

Pineapple Wedge & Cherry Garnish

Combine all liquids in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a highball glass over fresh ice.

I halved the recipe and served it straight up.  Brighton Punch has very pinapple-ish notes with small amount of Benedictine follow through.  Buffalo Trace only shows through in the warming effect.  However, this would definitely make a wonderful holiday cocktail party punch served over ice.  Definite sipper with a lemony tart bite that isn’t overbearing.  An additional note: When a cocktail is just too large to savor cold for the duration of sipping at a comfortable pace, serve half of the cocktail in a sidecar.  Keep the sidecar in a small container of ice to keep the cocktail vessel chilled without watering down the liquid refreshment.

Because sometimes we want our bourbon cocktails and stay lower calorie – so men will watch our girlish figures and we won’t have to…

The Wentworth cocktail was created by Sharon Cooper at Harvest Restaurant in Pomfret, Connecticut, according to Difford’s Guide #7.  Difford’s Guide is a great cocktail resource by the way.  Pick one up if you don’t have it.  The original recipe calls for regular cranberry juice.  One substitution of Light Cranberry juice turns the table on this cocktail making it a lower calorie cocktail of approximately 116 calories.  The flavor is lush and rich, so flavor hasn’t given up in the substitution.  Beautiful and complex, yet easily sippable.  Vermouth stars, but Buffalo Trace Bourbon definitely carries the weight in this luxuriant cocktail.

By the way, that Buffalo Trace Manhattan I’m sipping on:

1/2 ounce Carpano Antica Formula

Dash Classic Bitters

Combine liquids in mixing glass with ice.  Stir.  Strain into old fashioned martini glass.  Sip for an extended period of time.  It’s still fabulous as it warms.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to sample Buffalo Trace Bourbon, do so.  Try it at the corner bar or take the plunge and order it online if it isn’t available locally.  This bourbon is worth the wait, worth the order, worth the trip to the store.  It has terrific heritage behind the brand with many more classic to contemporary recipes to choose from should your palate drive you beyond the herd to try something a little cocktail diverse.

Top 10 Popular Shot & Shooter Recipes

Today, September 22, marks the day for the fastest drinking record; Dustin Phillips of the United States consumed a 14 ounce bottle of Ketchup through a 1/4” straw in 33 seconds flat ten years ago.  Ketchup seems a nasty ‘beverage’ to guzzle willingly, yet many enthusiastic participants flock to bars weekly to start (or end) the evening with the downing of a shot that none would eagerly sip slowly enough to take in the flavor or texture for a lingering moment on the tongue.  Admittedly there are many shot recipes that make the conversion to cocktail easily.  The Oatmeal Cookie shot is an outstanding example.

However, many prefer shots and shooters too horrid to down without holding the nose or throwing them back feverishly with a beer chaser or *gasp* water back.  I know…I mentioned the word ‘water’ in a cocktail post.  Ghastly!  Yet, there are a few recipes that make the rounds of Top Ten Shots, most searched for and ‘first one to come to mind’ when asked for best known mixed shot rather than straight liqueur (such as Jägermeister).

Buttery Nipple

1 ounce Butterscotch Schnapps

1/2 ounce Irish Cream

Pour Butterscotch Schnapps in bottom of a shot glass.  Carefully layer Irish Cream on top to float.  Shoot it!

Tweaked Buttery Nipple - adapted by Cheri Loughlin - photo property of Cheri LoughlinAt one time this was a favorite of mine, but I never could quite ‘shoot it’ due to the total sweetness of the concoction.  I would sip it warm and end up with sticky lips.  All the better with Baileys ‘Listen to Your Lips’ campaign.  But the Buttery Nipple happens to be rather nice on the rocks with a pleasant rum addition.  So, tweaking it just a bit…

Tweaked Buttery Nipple – adapted by Cheri Loughlin

1 ounce Rum

1/2 ounce Butterscotch Schnapps

1/2 ounce Irish Cream

Build in the order given over fresh ice in a rocks glass.  Add a stir stick.

Irish Car Bomb - photo from creative commons use siteIrish Car Bomb

1 pint Guinness Beer

1 shot Irish Cream

1 shot Irish Whiskey

Fill a pint glass two-thirds full of Guinness.  Fill a *double shot glass with Jameson and Baileys.  Drop the shot glass into the Guinness and chug its entirety immediately.  *Use a plastic shot glass to prevent shot glass from chipping when dropping into the glass or bumping against your teeth when chugging.

I’ve not had the best experience with Irish Car Bombs.  The realization that many people love them is astonishing since the Irish Cream curdles instantly in the beer glass.  But hey, they make the top ten listing for a reason.  It’s a popularity contest and this one wins it.

Red Headed Slut Shot - photo property of Cheri LoughlinRed Headed Slut

1 ounce Cranberry Juice

1/2 ounce Peach Schnapps

3/4 ounce Jägermeister

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a large shot glass.  Take this one fast for the sheer pleasure.

Is it the name, the taste or a little of both that get a rise out of the shot crowd?  The Red Headed Slut goes for the mix of a cocktail, yet shoots straight for excitement.

Jello Shots

2 packages Gelatin (flavor of choice)

1 cup Vodka

Mix gelatin according to package instructions, except substitute vodka for the cold water in process.  Use small plastic cups for forming gelatin into shots.  Place in refrigerator or freezer.  Whipped topping optional garnish for fun just before serving.

Jello shots are a party favorite especially around St. Patrick’s Day.  Lime becomes the flavor of the day with the green theme.  Other Jello Shot favorite gelatin flavors from Twitter and Facebook Q&A: Black Cherry, Blue Mixed Berry, Pineapple, Red and Orange.

Blow Job Shot – There are almost as many variations to this bachelorette party shot requirement as there are ways to blush while trying to order it at the bar.   You know how it goes…the most timid member of the group has to order the shot and the bartender ‘pretends’ not to hear the order four or five times until the poor girl is practically screaming for a Blow Job Shot above the rest of the crowd.  The frivolity just doesn’t stop since this shot requires the bride-to-be to find some tall, dark, handsome stranger to sit perfectly still while she places the Blow Job Shot between his knees and she takes the shot while on her knees without the use of her hands.  The party just never stops… until that is the bride-to-be decides she wants a Screaming Orgasm, but that’s really just another shot.

Mind Eraser Shot - photo property of Cheri LoughlinMind Eraser

1-1/4 ounce Coffee Liqueur

3/4 ounce Vodka

Splash Club Soda

Build over ice.  Serve with a straw.

The Mind Eraser gets placed within the shot realm, because it is supposed to be consumed with one fail swoop of a gulp through the straw.  That’s one mighty head rush.  Maybe this one should have been called Brain Freeze instead.  True story: I had a message waiting for me on the phone late one evening. “What’s the recipe for a Mind Eraser?” I get a lot of these.  Ironically, I forgot to return the phone call with the recipe.  So, here it is!

Scooby Snack

1/4 ounce Coconut Rum

1/4 ounce Crème de Bananes

1/4 ounce Melon Liqueur

1/4 ounce Pineapple Juice

1/4 ounce Half & Half

Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a shot glass.

The name Scooby Snack reminds me of Shaggy and Scooby hunting ghosts with a bag full of Scooby Snacks as reward.  However, Scooby Snack is one of those shots that easily converts into a cocktail on the rocks.  Double the amounts to make the drink 2-1/2 ounces in entirety and strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.

Purple Hooter Shot - photo property of Cheri LoughlinPurple Hooter

1 part Vodka

1 part Raspberry Liqueur

1 part Homemade Sour Mix

Splash Sprite

Combine first three ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to chill.  Strain into a pony glass.  Add splash of Sprite.  Serve.

Not too long ago a reader left a comment for me; my classic cocktails ‘sucked.’  He wanted a Purple Hooter.  Well, the classics aren’t mine.  I could only wish for the creativity of the master bartenders from so long ago.  The Purple Hooter happens to be a top ten favorite shot.  It’s beautiful and in my opinion would be much better with a little lemon, less sour and no sprite, but then again, what do I know?!

Chocolate Cake Shot - photo property of Cheri LoughlinChocolate Cake

1/2 ounce Hazelnut Liqueur

1/2 ounce Vodka

Lemon & Sugar Garnish

Coat lemon wedge with sugar.  Set aside.  Add liquid ingredients to cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to chill.  Strain into a shot glass.  Shoot the shot and then immediately bite and suck the sugar coated lemon.

Don’t ask me why, but it works and people swear by it.  The grain of the sugar gives just the right amount of texture to this overly sweetened shot.  Remember that water from earlier?  You might want it about now.

Nuts ‘n Berries

2 parts Lemon Vodka

1 part Hazelnut Liqueur

2 parts Cranberry Juice

Place all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a shot glass.

This one made the top ten listing, but it sounds a bit like Kellogg’s cereal.

Shots go fast which might make one go under quicker than they think.  Alcohol content remains the same no matter how fast or slow the drink is slammed, so please consume responsibly.

Parisian Oro Frappe

The Parisian Oro Frappe makes a nice Tequila coffee drink without all the sugary fuss…unless of course you dress it up with the extra 20 calories of whipped cream topping.  And why not?!  For those coffee lovers out there, this is a drink that crosses paths with tequila for inner warmth and spirited distraction.  The cool news is the Parisian Oro Frappe weighs in at a mere 99 calories without the whipped cream.  Oro de Jalisco Silver Tequila pairs nicely with coffee.

Refreshing Bourbon Cocktail Recipe: Bourbon Sling

A tall, cool refreshing bourbon cocktail doesn’t have to mean drowning the spirit in cola or adding a splash of water (unless that is your preference of course)!  A few simple additions can put a swing in your step without putting a dent in the bourbon flavor.   Bourbon Sling comes across as a nice and refreshing bourbon sipper.  It sure beats unsweetened tea any day!  Southern Comfort adds just a hint of inspiration to the mix, but could be tweaked just a little more for ‘umph’.  The drink is great ‘as is’ for quenching thirst on a hot day or chilling out after a long day’s work.

Bourbon Cocktail Recipe: Deadly Sin

Beware the name, but more wary of the high proof on this cocktail.  Old Fitzgerald Bourbon is 100 proof but tasted great in this bourbon recipe.  Nice mellow orange tones with quite a bit of vermouth shine.  Not too sweet.  Bourbon as base spirit runs deep in this sipping cocktail.  The glow reminds me of a beautiful sunset just before it fades.  Just as one would sit leisurely and enjoy a glorious sunset, relax and take in the full pleasure of Deadly Sin in a laid-back, easy going manner.

Evan Williams Bourbon: Kentucky First

‘Kentucky’s First Distiller’ may well have been Evan Williams according to some.  ‘Necessity, who is the mother of invention,’ plays out in bourbon history the way Plato, the Greek philosopher, mentioned well before bourbon’s time.  If there is something to be done the human spirit will find a way.

Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon Tasting - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinThe Kentucky terrain made getting crops to market burdensome for some growers in the region.  Grains would eventually deteriorate.  Rather than allow excess to go to waste, Evan Williams put a plan to action.  Williams set up a small distillery and began producing Kentucky whiskey.  It was rather popular among his fellow Louisville townsmen.  Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey continues in reputation and high esteem by bourbon lovers today.

Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon contains definite notes of chocolate with subtly of cherry, but very understated.  There is an underlying hush of peach that rises on the palate as the warmth begins to surround.  The bourbon is thin rather than sweet and caramely with round vanilla notes.  It is smooth around the edges with a hint of mocha and cinnamon spice.  Easily sipped as is or with a cube or two of ice to open up the aroma.  Makes a great mixer for bourbon cocktails and the price is exceedingly appropriate for mixability as well.

2 ounces Bourbon

Fresh Cherry Garnish

Place cherries and B&B Liqueur in a mixing glass.  Muddle.  Add bourbon and ice.  Shake vigorously to blend and chill.  Strain into an Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice.  Garnish with fresh cherry.

The hint of fresh fruit cherry with gentle notes of sweetness does not overpower this drink.  This is an excellent way to bring the fresh cocktail experience to bourbon.  There is no reason why Cachaca and Rum tropical drink recipes should have all the summer fresh fruit fun.  The Wild Cherry is simple, easy to make, beautiful to behold and luscious to consume.

Classic cocktails are always a favorite, but made extra special when bourbon plays in the mix.  Champagne dresses the bourbon with an extra splash of merriment taking one back to a time when entertaining meant dressing for the occasion and cocktails contained depth and meaning.  Orange flavor presents first of all.  Evan Williams Bourbon comes through in the middle with the bitters on the back end.  This classic cocktail would be an excellent champagne option for bourbon toasts and celebrations.

Twist on a Classic Cocktail: Almond Old Fashioned

This is an interesting take on a classic Old Fashioned cocktail.  The tequila version of the Almond Old Fashioned would be much better if it did not carry so much sweetness.  My recommendation would be to skip the agave syrup completely to balance out the flavor of this unique recipe.  Oro Tequila’s pepper tones shine with the addition of the Amaretto nuttiness.
