Versatility on the Fly: Low Calorie Drinks from Everyday Ingredients

Mocha Berry Latte Cocktail Drink Recipe using Coffee-Mate Coffee Creamer - Low Calorie Cocktail - photo property of The IntoxicologistLow calorie drink recipes don’t have to be difficult to come by or contain hard to find ingredients.  Often everyday ingredients found in the pantry and refrigerator will suffice in creating tasty treats that won’t have long lasting effects on the hips, thighs and waist – in moderation always of course.  With a few tweaks here and there one low calorie cocktail recipe can be converted from non-alcoholic latte to hot coffee cocktail to straight up holiday martini style.

Coffee Mate Coffee Creamer is an excellent example of one way to add flavor to the everyday cocktail experience while maintaining lower calorie and using consumer goods already found in the refrigerator.  Sure, Coffee Mate isn’t necessarily the first product that pops into a bartender or mixologists head when thinking of premium cocktails.  But, what is the cocktail experience about anyway?  Enjoying the moment?  Taking pleasure in a flavor one loves?  Creating something new, innovative and benefiting from the creative process?  Yes.

Mocha Berry Latte – created by The Intoxicologist

2 ounces Bolthouse Farms Mocha Cappuccino

1 ounce Coffee Mate Chocolate Raspberry

Combine in a mixing glass without ice.  Stir.  Pour over fresh ice in a double old fashioned glass.  Moderately sweet, completely chocolaty raspberry flavored with a hint of mocha in the background.  Decadently thick and rich. Total calories: 79.5

Cafe Mocha Berry Hot Coffee Cocktail Drink Recipe using Coffee-Mate Coffee Creamer - Low Calorie Cocktail - photo property of The IntoxicologistMocha Berry Latte is the lower calorie non-alcoholic Mocktail answer to coffee house lattes and a raspberry infused White Russian.  Mix this one quickly at home and savor the slow sip.  This is a quick fix dessert style cocktail for those with a sweet tooth.

Café Mocha Berry – created by The Intoxicologist

2 ounces Bolthouse Farms Mocha Cappuccino

1 ounce Coffee Mate Chocolate Raspberry

1 ounce Bacardi Superior Rum

Fresh Brewed Coffee or Espresso

Place first three ingredients in bottom of large coffee mug.  Top with freshly brewed coffee or espresso.  Perfect for ebbing fall and winter’s chill.  Make this into a non-alcoholic low calorie version and keep the calorie total at 82.  Total calories: 147 with rum.

This upgrade from the latte features fresh brewed coffee and rum for added warmth.  A dollop of whipped cream adds a few more calories, but it isn’t necessary for the richness of this winter warmer.

Mocha Berry Teenie Cocktail Drink Recipe using Coffee-Mate Coffee Creamer - Low Calorie Cocktail - photo property of The IntoxicologistMocha Berry Teenie – created by The Intoxicologist

2 ounces Bolthouse Farms Mocha Cappuccino

1 ounce Coffee Mate Chocolate Raspberry

1 ounce Bacardi Superior Rum

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a martini glass.  Garnish with one raspberry if desired.  Total calories: 144.5

The rum brings more notes of mocha and cappuccino out over the chocolate raspberry.  The drink is of course thinner but still worthy of taking one’s time sipping for maximum pleasure.  If vodka is your preferred base spirit over rum, by all means switch it out in the drink recipe, but go for quality.  42Below Vodka would be a great choice since it carries weight and character in its body.

Mocha Berry Teenie would make an excellent addition to holiday gatherings without anyone noticing the lower calorie benefits.  The portion rounds out nicely with lower alcohol content than usual martini style cocktails and contains lovely chocolate flavor for festive occasions.

Cinnamon Whip Shot Cocktail Drink Recipe using Coffee-Mate Coffee Creamer - Low Calorie Shot - photo property of The IntoxicologistCinnamon Whip Shot – created by The Intoxicologist

1/2 ounce Coffee Mate Cinnamon Bun

2 ounces Finlandia Vodka

Whipped Cream Garnish

Combine liquid ingredients in cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to chill.  Half between two shot glasses.  Top with small dollop of whipped cream.  Total calories: 195 in all. Total calories per shot glass: 97.5

Ah, such rarity that The Intoxicologist will ever, ever come up with a shot drink recipe.  However this was a cocktail recipe gone awry as is sometimes the case.  After playing with the ratios a bit the cocktail became the shot for cinnamon lovers everywhere.
