Cabo Wabo Tequila Rocks National Tequila Day

In honor of National Tequila Day Cabo Wabo Tequila sent out three unique recipes to liven up celebrations.  The Waborita stays most true to traditional style Margarita recipes while The Churro Margarita and The Guacarita venture into territory some would speculate as adventurous beyond the margarita glass. 

Licor 43, Carolans Irish Cream and Tuaca all remind of creamy, buttery, decadent deliciousness.  Add in the tequila with cinnamon and sugar rim and this cocktail certainly takes off into the realm of luscious dessert feel.

2 ounces Cabo Wabo Añejo Tequila

1 ounce Licor 43

1 ounce Carolans Irish Cream

1/4 ounce Tuaca

Mix of Cinnamon and Sugar for the rim

Shake up liquid ingredients with ice. Strain cocktail over fresh ice into a rocks glass, rimmed with the cinnamon sugar mixture.

If there were ever a Margarita to pair with favorite guacamole and chips snack food The Guacarita would definitely be the one.  Technically Avocado is a fruit rather than vegetable like so many people believe it to be, so enjoy your green fruit blended to rock & roll bliss in this unexpected Margarita recipe.

The Guacarita

2 ounces Cabo Wabo Blanco Tequila

1/2 Skinned Avocado

1/4 ounce Agave Nectar

1/2 ounce Fresh Lime Juice

4 Cilantro leaves

Place all ingredients and ice into a blender. Blend on high for 10 seconds and pour into a margarita glass. Garnish with a short cilantro sprig.

Tales of the Margarita

Simple Margarita - National Margarita Day - photo property Cheri LoughlinMany claim to be the inventor of the Margarita, but we’ll never be sure of its true origin. The most popular anecdote claims that Carlos “Danny” Herrera developed the drink at his Tijuana-area restaurant, Rancho La Gloria, around 1938. Herrera created the cocktail for one of his customers, a beautiful show girl, and aspiring actress, Marjorie King, who was allergic to all hard alcohol except than tequila. She didn’t enjoy tequila alone, so Herrera started to experiment with different combinations to make the beverage more palatable. The most delicious combination mixed white tequila with lime juice, shaved ice, triple sec and surprisingly, salt. Herrera named his concoction “Margarita” in honor of his muse, Marjorie. – quoted from PR material

The Waborita

1 ounce Fresh Lime Juice

1 ounce Cointreau

2 ounces Cabo Wabo Reposado Tequila

Splash of Grand Marnier

Salt the rim of a large margarita glass. Combine ingredients in a shaker over ice and strain into the glass. Serve with a lime wheel.  (This signature margarita is served at Sammy Hagar’s new Las Vegas Cabo Wabo Cantina)

Red, White & Blue Cocktails

Fourth of July rings in the unofficial start of summer with picnics, parades, fireworks and steady flow of fun and laughter.  Keep everyone’s thirst refreshed with cocktails that utilize fresh fruits of the season and the sparkling colors of Red, White & Blue to correspond with Independence day celebrations.

Twisted utilizes a diet peach flavored water, but has no diet connotation in the drink.  The taste is fresh, light and definitely slurp worthy.

2 Fresh Pineapple Spears (1 inch x 3 inch)

1-1/2 ounce Peach Rum

2 ounces Welch’s Diet Peach Twist

1 ounce Club Soda or Brut Champagne

Muddle fresh fruit in bottom of mixing glass.  Add peach rum and Welch’s Diet Peach Twist with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into highball glass or goblet over fresh ice.  Top with club soda or brut champagne according to preference.  Stir.

Pearl is an adaptation of the Perfect Margarita.  The real hook for Pearl is the garnish; olives.  Usually saved for classic martinis, the olive becomes the surprise find for this margarita.  My version pops up the heat with jalapeno stuffed olives. Nix the olives if they don’t float your boat, but definitely take this margarita out for a spin.

1 ounce Fresh Lime Juice

1/2 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

3/4 ounce Agave Nectar

1/4 ounce Cointreau

Salt for Garnished Rim

Queen Size Jalapeño Stuffed Olives Garnish

Rim cocktail glass with salt and set aside.  Combine all liquid ingredients in cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake vigorously to blend and chill.  Strain into cocktail glass over ice or even better, serve straight up.  Garnish with skewered jalepeno olives. 

When I think of blueberry vodka or blueberries in general, the old television series Happy Days and Richie singing “I found my thrill on blueberry hill…” starts jingling through my head.  Thrilled brings in the beautiful flavor of blueberries while allowing the sweetness of fresh pineapple to interweave into the mix.  Depending upon your sweet tooth, vary the simple syrup.  Fresh egg white adds a little froth and complexity to the drink, but isn’t necessary for a thrilling good time.

2 ounce Blueberry Vodka

1/2 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

1/4 to 1/2 ounce Simple Syrup (according to taste)

1 Egg White – optional

Muddle pineapple and simple syrup in bottom of mixing glass.  If adding egg white, do so at this point and dry shake.  Add vodka, lemon juice and ice to mixing glass.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into chilled cocktail glass.

Variation on a Classic: Cinnabar Negroni

It comes as no surprise the classic Negroni is among the highest of favorite classic cocktails on The Intoxicologist site.  This classic has been stirred, shaken and built in various forms many times over with assorted spirits, aperitifs and inclusion of champagne topper.

Another slight remake of this delicious classic recipe appears in the New Classic Cocktails book by Gary Regan.  The book contains detail about how the recipe creation came about at the hand of Jason MacDonald, head bartender of Cinnabar in Los Angeles.  There is an extreme love for Campari running amok at Cinnabar, so a Negroni remake sounds like an obvious choice for cocktail conversion.

2 parts Campari

1 part London Dry Gin

1 part Sweet Vermouth

2 dashes Orange Bitters

Orange Slice Garnish

Place ice in an old fashioned glass.  Build cocktail in order given.  Stir.  Garnish with orange slice.

First confession – though Jason created this version with Campari, my love for Cynar won out and I immediately substituted Cynar for Campari to start.  Though this version of the classic Negroni flavors the tongue sweeter than I usually fancy, it overwhelms with such delicious zest and zing.  The sweet to bitter balance combines in rhythmic dance cohesively.  Flourishing.  Rich.  Divine.  I’ll have another please.  Oh, and don’t forget to nibble the Cinnabar Negroni soaked orange slice.
