If you can’t make it to Manhattan for the holidays, bring Manhattan to a glass near you. Who would have thought there could be more than a handful of variations on the classic Manhattan recipe?  This tried and true favorite has been tweaked, pinched, played with and adapted in so many ways it becomes difficult to decipher where the classic begins and ends. With so many degrees in flavor preference and style, the base recipe sees adjustment with flavored liqueurs, juices and additional spirits.

The variations of Manhattan recipes below bring a wide variety of contrasting styles to the forefront while keeping to the thread of at least one thing in common; bourbon.  The first few closely match the classic Manhattan with call brands. After that the Manhattan gets a little more interesting.

I am dumbfounded at the fact that in the midst of all of these manhattan recipes, never even ONCE is it mentioned that a true manhattan is made with rye. [shakes head in disbelief]

Yeah, yeah yeah! That “Sainted Manhattan” with St-Germain and dry vermouth is EPIC.

It says right off these are “variations of the classic Manhattan” :/

I’ve done some experimenting with classic variations that use rye and haven’t found one that comes together quite right.

But I do admit I’ve never had a variation that can top my favorite Rittenhouse/Carpano/Regans!

My go to variation of the Manhattan using Rye is 2 ounces Rittenhouse Rye, 1/2 ounce each of Lillet Blanc and Heering Cherry Liqueur with a couple dashes of Angostura bitters. It’s a bit sweeter than a traditional Manhattan, but really good.

Thanks! On the schedule for this weekend! I have Luxardo Cherry Liqueur with the straw on the bottle, worthy sub for the Heering?

Luxardo Maraschino Cherry in the straw covered bottle will not taste the same as Heering Cherry. I’d love to know what you thought of the substitution though. I like Luxardo Maraschino Cherry in small doses. Too much of it always tastes like perfume to me.
