Low Calorie Mocktail Monday: Candied Lemon Drop

without comments

Going low calorie and non-alcoholic for the New Year means fresh and exciting concoctions for the martini glass.  Two versions of the tried and true Lemon Drop Martini come to life in creative ways below thanks to Courtright’s award winning restaurant in Willow Springs, IL.  Courtright’s serves exceptional service and dining experiences for their guests.  They also recently offered a few recipes to AAA for safe holiday consumption and party planning.  Their Mocktail Candied Lemon Drop recipe illustrates radiance in a glass.  Delicious in their original recipe, but equally superb as a low calorie alternative.  One would never know sugar-free syrup and all natural sweetener acted as substitutes.  Definitely give this low calorie Mocktail recipe a whirl.

Versatility on the Fly: Low Calorie Drinks from Everyday Ingredients

without comments

Mocha Berry Latte Cocktail Drink Recipe using Coffee-Mate Coffee Creamer - Low Calorie Cocktail - photo property of The IntoxicologistLow calorie drink recipes don’t have to be difficult to come by or contain hard to find ingredients.  Often everyday ingredients found in the pantry and refrigerator will suffice in creating tasty treats that won’t have long lasting effects on the hips, thighs and waist – in moderation always of course.  With a few tweaks here and there one low calorie cocktail recipe can be converted from non-alcoholic latte to hot coffee cocktail to straight up holiday martini style.

Coffee Mate Coffee Creamer is an excellent example of one way to add flavor to the everyday cocktail experience while maintaining lower calorie and using consumer goods already found in the refrigerator.  Sure, Coffee Mate isn’t necessarily the first product that pops into a bartender or mixologists head when thinking of premium cocktails.  But, what is the cocktail experience about anyway?  Enjoying the moment?  Taking pleasure in a flavor one loves?  Creating something new, innovative and benefiting from the creative process?  Yes.

Mocha Berry Latte – created by The Intoxicologist

2 ounces Bolthouse Farms Mocha Cappuccino

1 ounce Coffee Mate Chocolate Raspberry

Combine in a mixing glass without ice.  Stir.  Pour over fresh ice in a double old fashioned glass.  Moderately sweet, completely chocolaty raspberry flavored with a hint of mocha in the background.  Decadently thick and rich. Total calories: 79.5

Cafe Mocha Berry Hot Coffee Cocktail Drink Recipe using Coffee-Mate Coffee Creamer - Low Calorie Cocktail - photo property of The IntoxicologistMocha Berry Latte is the lower calorie non-alcoholic Mocktail answer to coffee house lattes and a raspberry infused White Russian.  Mix this one quickly at home and savor the slow sip.  This is a quick fix dessert style cocktail for those with a sweet tooth.

Café Mocha Berry – created by The Intoxicologist

2 ounces Bolthouse Farms Mocha Cappuccino

1 ounce Coffee Mate Chocolate Raspberry

1 ounce Bacardi Superior Rum

Fresh Brewed Coffee or Espresso

Place first three ingredients in bottom of large coffee mug.  Top with freshly brewed coffee or espresso.  Perfect for ebbing fall and winter’s chill.  Make this into a non-alcoholic low calorie version and keep the calorie total at 82.  Total calories: 147 with rum.

This upgrade from the latte features fresh brewed coffee and rum for added warmth.  A dollop of whipped cream adds a few more calories, but it isn’t necessary for the richness of this winter warmer.

Mocha Berry Teenie Cocktail Drink Recipe using Coffee-Mate Coffee Creamer - Low Calorie Cocktail - photo property of The IntoxicologistMocha Berry Teenie – created by The Intoxicologist

2 ounces Bolthouse Farms Mocha Cappuccino

1 ounce Coffee Mate Chocolate Raspberry

1 ounce Bacardi Superior Rum

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a martini glass.  Garnish with one raspberry if desired.  Total calories: 144.5

The rum brings more notes of mocha and cappuccino out over the chocolate raspberry.  The drink is of course thinner but still worthy of taking one’s time sipping for maximum pleasure.  If vodka is your preferred base spirit over rum, by all means switch it out in the drink recipe, but go for quality.  42Below Vodka would be a great choice since it carries weight and character in its body.

Mocha Berry Teenie would make an excellent addition to holiday gatherings without anyone noticing the lower calorie benefits.  The portion rounds out nicely with lower alcohol content than usual martini style cocktails and contains lovely chocolate flavor for festive occasions.

Cinnamon Whip Shot Cocktail Drink Recipe using Coffee-Mate Coffee Creamer - Low Calorie Shot - photo property of The IntoxicologistCinnamon Whip Shot – created by The Intoxicologist

1/2 ounce Coffee Mate Cinnamon Bun

2 ounces Finlandia Vodka

Whipped Cream Garnish

Combine liquid ingredients in cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to chill.  Half between two shot glasses.  Top with small dollop of whipped cream.  Total calories: 195 in all. Total calories per shot glass: 97.5

Ah, such rarity that The Intoxicologist will ever, ever come up with a shot drink recipe.  However this was a cocktail recipe gone awry as is sometimes the case.  After playing with the ratios a bit the cocktail became the shot for cinnamon lovers everywhere.

Living Grand & Teenie: Low Calorie Cocktail & Drink Recipes

without comments

Low calorie living doesn’t mean giving up pleasure, taste or cocktail hour.  What it does mean is better planning and thinking a little outside the box.  In some cases fresh fruit rather than liqueur makes all the difference in the world regarding sugar content and it ups the flavor tremendously – win/win for you!  Changing drinking patterns such as opting for low calorie champagne rather than the trendy calorie packed Cosmopolitan or Margarita is not only more glamorous in the glass, but lighter on the lips and hips.  Take a little time to cruise through the listing of cocktails below to find a few new favorite recipes in a variety of spirit bases.  This listing will be updated frequently, so check back from time to time.

Teenie-Eclipse – adapted by The Intoxicologist - Low Calorie Whiskey Drink Recipe using Jack Daniel's - 86 Calories 3.15 grams Carbohydrates Teenie-Eclipse – adapted by The Intoxicologist

Origination: Signature cocktail of Eclipse Bars – England

Original recipe for Eclipse found in Difford’s Guide 7

5 Fresh Raspberries

1/2 ounce DaVinci Raspberry Sugar Free Syrup

1 ounce Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey

1 ounce Ocean Spray Light Cranberry Juice

1/4 ounce Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice

Muddle raspberries and raspberry sugar free syrup together in bottom of mixing glass.  Add Jack Daniel’s Whisky, cranberry, fresh lime juice and ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a rocks glass with crushed ice.  Garnish with bruised mint leaves and raspberry.  Total calories: 86 Total Carbohydrates 3.15

This one really knocked my knickers off with its fabulous taste even ‘teenied’.  Sure there is a little of the sugar free taste buried within, but the fruit flavor really kicks in and creates quite the tasty treat.  At 86 calories and barely there carb count, I might bump up the Jack Daniels to 1-1/2 ounces and add on the extra 34.5 calories.  That would give it just a fraction more whiskey flavor and still weigh in at just 120.5 calories.

Bacardi Rum is Your Football Game Day Recipe for Success

without comments

Bacardi & Coke - Bacardi Rum - Football Weekend Gameday Drink Recipes - photo property of The IntoxicologistGame day is all about ease of preparation no matter whose turn it is to make a mad dash for the kitchen during commercial breaks or those nail biting moments when referees are reviewing plays.  Bacardi Rum drink recipes take the worry out of the time crunch and place the flavors you love into the cocktail glass.  Classic cocktails have certainly seen their share of comeback drinks with Manhattans and the Old Fashioned, but on game day there is just something that speaks to ‘classic’ with the ‘whoosh’ of a fresh bottle of Coke twisting open just before it splashes into a nicely iced glass of Bacardi Rum.

Bacardi & Coke

1 part Bacardi Superior Rum

3 parts Coca-Cola

Build in a tall glass over fresh ice.  Lime garnish optional.

The interesting thing about the Bacardi & Coke drink recipe is the misconception that merely adding the lime wedge makes this particular version the original Cuba Libre.  It just isn’t so according to sources at Bacardi.  The Original Bacardi Cuba Libre calls for the inclusion of Bacardi Gold rather than Bacardi Superior.  Different rums create an entirely alternate flavor interpretation of the same drink.  So, if you’ve been drinking your ‘Cuba Libre’ with anything other than Bacardi Gold this game day go for the Gold and sample it the way it was intended.

Original Bacardi Cuba Libre - Bacardi Rum - Football Weekend Gameday Drink Recipes - photo property of The IntoxicologistOriginal Bacardi Cuba Libre

1 part Bacardi Gold Rum

3 parts Coca-Cola

Build in a tall glass over fresh ice.  Lime wedge garnish.

Some have been inspired by the tradition of legendary cocktails.  Cocktail Guru, Jonathan Pogash, used the Bacardi & Coke cocktail as structural basis for a seasonal combination that includes the darker, richer Bacardi 8 Rum, Espresso and bitters.  Put a little jolt in your usual game day mixer by bringing in a bit of zing to the glass Cocktail Guru style.

The Bacardi Cuba Libre – created by Jonathan Pogash

1-1/2 parts Bacardi 8

1/2 part Strong Espresso

3 dashes Jerry Thomas Decanter Bitters

Top with Coca-Cola

Lime Wedge

Build ingredients in a highball glass over fresh ice.  Squeeze fresh lime garnish into the glass.

Bacardi Hurricane Low Calorie Drink Recipe Version - Bacardi Rum - Football Weekend Gameday Drink Recipes - photo property of The IntoxicologistAll this chatter about Bacardi & Coke just makes me thirsty for something a little off the beaten path.  Some commercial breaks are longer than others, so a wee bit of mix time will only cause one to miss…Oh, I don’t know…Brett Favre throwing a touchdown pass in the last two seconds of the game!  Yes, I missed it, but still live in a house divided over the entire debacle.

The Hurricane is a classic cocktail yet laden with calories.  Lower the impact of calories this game day with a few tweaks to the original Bacardi Hurricane drink recipe.  The cocktail remains easy to create and flavorful, yet you get to cheer for the home team without game day regret.

Bacardi Hurricane Teenied – adapted by The Intoxicologist

1 ounce Bacardi Select

1/2 ounce Bacardi Superior

1-1/2 ounce Tropicana Trop50

1-1/2 ounce Ocean Spray Light Cranberry Juice

Orange Twist Garnish

Build in a Hurricane glass over fresh ice.  Garnish with orange twist.  Approximate total calories: 119

Bacardi Select Rum gives the Hurricane rich character beyond the usual.  Using Tropicana Trop50, light version of cranberry juice and cutting out both grenadine and fresh cut fruit garnishes takes out a huge amount of calories that would otherwise add little to the drink besides sugar.  The flavor is still all intact.  Think wiser when building a cocktail for lower calorie inclusion and the taste will remain while your girlish figure stays intact.

Party for Pink Drink Recipe - 30 Days of Pink benefitting the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation - Football Weekend Gameday Drink Recipes - photo property of The IntoxicologistParty for Pink – created by The Intoxicologist

1-1/2 ounce Bacardi Superior

1 ounce Orange Juice

1/4 ounce Triple Sec

1/4 ounce Lemon Juice

1/2 ounce Homemade Grenadine

Orange Twist Garnish

Build in a tall glass over ice.  Garnish with orange twist.

It only looks too sweet, pink and fru fru.  There is a hint of tartness in the finish with a wee bit of grapefruit quality feel to the flavor.  Better yet, this cocktail is an easy build.  It also plays well with the 30 Days of Pink theme The Intoxicologist and National Cocktails Examiner sites have been building upon that runs through October 20 benefitting the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.  Now that’s something to feel good about even when game day just isn’t going your way.

Low Calorie Drink Recipe: Blackberry & Teenie

without comments

Blackberry & Teenie Low Calorie Drink Recipe - Bacardi Superior Rum - DaVinci Raspberry Sugar Free Syrup - Adapted by The Intoxicologist - photo property of The IntoxicologistTo be perfectly honest coconut water is not my favorite liquid in the universe, but there are always alternatives to consider that one would shiver at the mere thought!  In a drink recipe of this sort, coconut water comes in quite handy for adding a bit of flavor, added volume and very little calories to the cocktail.  Fresh muddled blackberries give the Blackberry & Teenie regal color while doing Difford’s original Black & White Daiquiri a fraction of the calorie laden justice it deserves.  These hips (..er boots) were made for walkin’ and the Blackberry & Teenie will keep the girlish figure one stride ahead of winter weight gain.

Blackberry & Teenie – adapted by The Intoxicologist

Inspired by Black & White Daiquiri created by Simon Difford (Difford’s Guide 7)

5 Blackberries

2 ounces Coconut Water

1-1/2 ounce Bacardi Superior Rum

1/4 Fresh Lime – Squeezed

1/4 ounce DaVinci Raspberry Syrup Sugar Free

3 Blackberries Garnish (optional)

Muddle Blackberries and coconut water in bottom of mixing glass.  Add all other ingredients except garnish.  Add in ice.  Shake to chill.  Strain into a martini glass.  Garnish with skewer of three blackberries. Total Calories: 117
