Low Calorie Gets Full Bodied Flavor

with one comment

Just because a cocktail carries the label of lower calorie does not mean the flavor comes through wimpy.  Full Bodied Maven’s name originated from the fact this drink contains abundant flavor.  Hangar 1 Kaffir Lime infuses significant zing with minimal alcohol.  Two tasty low calorie juice options combine for additional tang giving this summery number perfect punch without becoming overly sweetened.

Full Bodied Maven – created by Cheri Loughlin, The IntoxicologistFull Bodied Maven – created by Cheri Loughlin, The Intoxicologist

1 ounce Hangar 1 Kaffir Lime Vodka

3 ounces Ocean Spray Light Cranberry Juice

1/2 ounce Tropicana Trop50 Orange Juice

Lime Wedge Garnish

Build over ice in a large cocktail glass.  Stir.  Garnish with lime wedge.

Kaffir lime flavor shines predominantly with cranberry and orange following.  Full Bodied Maven’s flavors merge in punch-like effect creating an excellent party drink for crowds.  Ease of preparation makes this a breeze for making ahead of time or whipping up on the fly.

Tropicana Trop50 is said to contain 50% less sugar and calories than traditional Tropicana with no artificial sweeteners.  It is made from fresh, squeezed oranges rather than concentrate.  While its use in low calorie drinks has been great (smoothies and creamsicle recipes, too), I am not a huge fan of the Trop50 as a substitute for the real deal where orange juice is concerned.  There is a bit of odd residue left in the glass no doubt from the non-artificial sweetener add-in.  Follow TropicanaOJ on Twitter for additional information about the products and updates.

Looking for more lower calorie options: A Tale of Two Limes, Bikini Blueberry, Raspberry Ringer, Ruby Weekdays and Mango Cran-Cooler use vodka as the primary base spirit.  Blackberry & Teenie, Nilla Basil Daiquiri Teeni and the Mai Tai-Teenie are rum based cocktails.  For those who prefer tequila the Parisian Oro Frappe, Mango Oro and 901 Tea-quila Time make excellent choices.  Low calorie Mocktail variations available include the Candied Lemon Drop and Sparkling Mango.  There are even a few with bourbon and whiskey; Wentworth Teenie, Jim’s Peach Fuzz, Teenie-Eclipse and the Apple Trace Teenie.  Crimson Raider Teenie includes cognac and the richness of fresh blackberries.  Rangpur & Tonic is an easy gin drink for ordering while out with friends or sipping poolside.

Spring Simplicity Recipe: Raspberry Ringer

without comments

Raspberry Ringer - Lower Calorie Cocktail - Created by Cheri Loughlin, The IntoxicologistIn honor of girlish figures, rows of light and diet fruit juices and an eye to keeping it simple the Raspberry Ringer drink recipe made its way to the cocktail glass one happy hour evening (and a few more since then I might add).  Delicious choices lining the spring cocktail bar do not always have to be filled with fresh lemon, lime, muddled fruit or layered with liqueurs and sparkling sodas to satiate the palate with fulfillment.  Sometimes all it requires is simplicity, a splash of flavor and additional display of charming garnish to capture the senses.  Instantly the cocktail glass has gone beyond simple non-descript lower calorie juice to spunky mixer for happy hour without the guilt.  Fashionable, flavorful, no muss.

Raspberry Ringer – created by Cheri Loughlin, The Intoxicologist

1-1/4 ounce Vox Raspberry Vodka

2 ounces Ocean Spray Light Cranberry Juice

5 frozen Cranberries Garnish

Combine over fresh ice in a cocktail glass.  Garnish with frozen cranberries floated on top.  Slowly sip with a straw to savor every drop.

Looking for more lower calorie options: A Tale of Two Limes uses highly flavored Hangar 1 Kaffir Lime in an updated version of the traditional G&T.  Bikini Blueberry is an excellent option for those loving pineapple & blueberry fruits.  Ruby Weekdays and Mango Cran-Cooler use vodka as the primary base spirit.

A Tale of Two Limes

without comments

A Tale of Two Limes using Hangar 1 Kaffir Lime created by Cheri Loughlin, The Intoxicologist - photo property The IntoxicologistAlways on the lookout for variations on traditional cocktails, Hangar 1 Kaffir Lime Vodka caught my eye for not only a summer styled tonic creation – but lower calorie version at that!  The Hangar 1 Kaffir Lime claims notes of wood, white pepper and cucumber.  My take is superior lime flavor with higher quality feel; or more bang for your low calorie drink buck so to speak.   More flavor in the vodka means less need in the glass for those watching the waistline.  Add in a wee bit of fresh lime, diet tonic and a magically delicious low calorie, high quality drink awaits.

Prepare for Bikini Season with Low Calorie Drinks

without comments

Bikini Blueberry Low Calorie Drink Recipe Created by Cheri Loughlin, The Intoxicologist - photo property of The IntoxicologistBikini season is just around the corner.  While fresh is best where cocktails are concerned, there are many flavorful alternatives stocked on grocery shelves for those who prefer low calorie consumption.  Ocean Spray’s Diet Blueberry flavor packs surprising luscious fruit flavor in the bottle without all the added calories.  It pairs deliciously well with SKYY Infusions Pineapple for a long refreshing drink to keep the taste buds satisfied and the girlish figure in check.

Bikini Blueberry – created by Cheri Loughlin, The Intoxicologist

1-1/4 ounce SKYY Infusions Pineapple Vodka

3 ounces Ocean Spray Diet Blueberry

1-1/2 ounce Club Soda – optional

Fresh Pineapple Garnish

Build on the rocks in stemless wine goblet or highball glass.  Add squeeze of fresh lemon if desired.  Nice fruity delicious flavor.  For deep, richer flavor skip the club soda.

There are many low calorie cocktails on The Intoxicologist site to choose from for sipping pleasure any time of year.  Ruby Weekdays and Mango Cran-Cooler use vodka as the primary base spirit.

Lower Calorie Ruby Weekdays Cocktail

with one comment

Absolut Vodka Flavors

Over on The Intoxicologist Facebook Fan page Barbara Winters recommended a cocktail based upon what days of the week one chooses to consume a cocktail:  “Monday – Thursday” it is all about Absolut.  Barbara’s assessment of the cocktail, “Yummy!” – Intoxicologist Notation: Barbara didn’t give a name for her cocktail creation or measurements, so I’ve given it the good old fashioned American try at building and naming it.  This is an excellent choice cocktail for relaxing at the end of the day.  It is light and fruity on taste without weighing one down on caloric intake.  Since it is a long drink it is also filling, leaving one with a fuller feeling after a single cocktail.

Ruby Weekdays

1-1/4 parts Absolut Vodka

3 parts Light Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice

Splash of 7-Up

Build ingredients in a highball glass over ice adding 7-Up last. Stir & serve.  If one were to use Diet 7-Up this cocktail would be lower in calorie overall.  The vodka weighs in at approximately 92 calories, grapefruit juice at 15 calories and Diet 7-Up at zero making Ruby Weekdays a 107 calorie cocktail – perfect for lower calorie weekday consumption.  Take this cocktail idea a step further by playing with your favorite Absolut flavor, light fruit juice and diet 7-Up or diet tonic water.
