Review: Banks Rum

Banks Rum Review Sample photo copyright Cheri LoughlinBanks Rum Tasting Notes

Imported. 43% alcohol. 86 Proof.

Banks Rum Tasting photo copyright Cheri LoughlinAroma: Lots of butterscotch. Similar to round flat disk butterscotch candies. No burn on the nose. Gives suggestion of thick rather than thin rum simply from the luxurious aroma.

Taste: Bit of burn tasted neat. Contains butterscotch flavor notes, but not as sweetened as aroma suggests. Barely any aftertaste. Flavor is there, lingers a moment and then dissipates.

With ice: Much of the alcohol burn is taken away. Deep mellow flavor left in its place. Warming. Finished flavor is retained longer on the taste buds. More defined vanilla / butterscotch remains. Coffee to mocha note comes through just barely.

Reminds me of 10 Cane Rum in some respects. Flavors lovely on the tongue with slightly buttery notes that give the illusion of sweetened decadence without the sugary sweet factor. Would be simply divine in handcrafted Daiquris.

Review: Dragon Bleu Flavored Vodkas

Dragon Bleu White Ginger Tasting Notes

Dragon Bleu White Ginger Sample photo copyright Cheri LoughlinVodka infused with natural ginger and agave syrup

40% Alcohol – 80 proof

Color: Misty white. Cloudy like fresh lemonade without the pulp.

Aroma: Faintest dab of ginger. Some sweetness. Citrus such as lemon zest.

Taste: Beautiful lilting soft ginger flavor. Tinge of sweetness, but definitely not sugary like liqueurs. Perhaps there is just enough gentle sweetness to tame some of the bite ginger can sometimes leave on the tongue.

Refreshing with light sweetness mingling softly with brush of ginger.

Dragon Bleu Rose Blossom Tasting Notes

Vodka infused with natural rose and agave nectar

40% Alcohol – 80 Proof

Dragon Bleu Rose Blossom Sample 1 photo copyright Cheri LoughlinColor: Crystal clear.

Aroma: Barely there hint of rose. Slight perfume. More traditional vodka aroma.

Taste: Definite rose especially in the after taste. Much sweeter than expected, but still not to the degree of liqueur.

I’ll be completely honest and say I am not a fan of roses, rose scent and especially not a fan of rose water or rose flavored cocktails. However, cocktail culture ventures more and more toward varied cocktails utilizing botanicals / floral flavors. The addition of rose in cocktails is quite popular.

Crème Yvette immediately comes to mind as wonderful addition to the Dragon Bleu Rose Blossom.

Quite lovely. Champagne highlights the rose flavor while softening it at the same time. Color lends itself well to holiday parties and celebrations.

Dragon Bleu Penja Pepper Tasting Notes

Vodka infused with natural penja pepper and agave nectar.

40% Alcohol – 80 Proof

Color: Crystal clear

Aroma: Total traditional vodka aroma. No hint of pepper or sugar.

Taste: Sweetness followed by pepper such as mild black pepper. Quickly fades rather than scalding the tongue. Almost too much sweetness in comparison to the peppery spice. The sweet to pepper flavors are slightly in competition with one another. Although, the sweet to peppery flavor has me instantly craving salty thin potato chips. Lays potato chips to be precise… Lays potato chips… like a cocktail you can’t have just one.

Review: Absolut Brooklyn

The latest Absolut ‘Cities’ launch brings new flair to the Absolut bottle style with depiction of the omnipresent Brooklyn Stoop.  The bottle, designed by Spike Lee, embraces the foundation of the Brooklyn community with vibrant color.  Look closely to find clever mentions of Brooklyn within the stoop itself.  But most notable, the Lars Olsson Smith seal has been altered for the first time ever.  This limited edition Cities offering seal portrays Lars wearing a baseball cap and glasses reminiscent of Spike Lee.

Spiked Core created by Cheri Loughlin - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Absolut Brooklyn Tasting

Aroma: Fresh cut apples; juicy. No alcohol burn. Barely there hint of spice. Simple lusciousness indicating sweetness to the tiniest degree.

Taste: The ginger lies in wait beneath the aroma showing through as primary, glowing forth with subtle spicy charm.  Apple softens from the aroma of red juicy to fresh baked with hints of peel bringing a bit of depth to the fruit flavor.  Lots of spicy play with overlay of cinnamon and sprinkling of pie crust.

This takes me a little off guard, a bit surprising.  Not entirely an apple fan when it comes to cocktail and juice flavorings, I am quite taken by the appeal of this offering.  Though it seems a bit off season as to its spring to summer delivery since the spirit comes across more warming, Absolut Brooklyn delivers well on the palate.  This will definitely make bobbing for apples quite the treat at the next Halloween party when the season rolls around.

1/4 measure Benedictine

1 measure White Cranberry Juice

1 measure Ginger Ale

Crystallized Ginger Round Garnish

Fill highball glass with ice.  Add liquids in order given.  Stir.  Garnish with crystallized ginger round inserted directly in drink.

This drink builds upon the core flavors of apple and spice by gently enhancing the fruited sweetness of apple with St-Germain and building upon the spicy overlay with Benedictine.  Choose to stop building the drink with the first three ingredients and a lovely warming cocktail emerges for fall to winter sipping.  Shake it over ice and strain into a martini glass.  Continue with all the ingredients over ice for a light and delicious apple inspired drink for summertime sipping.

This newest ‘Cities’ inspired offering honors and supports the Brooklyn community with Absolut Vodka donating $50,000 from profits from the sale of Absolut Brooklyn to Habitat for Humanity New York City.

Review: Averna

Averna has a rich heritage beginning with Benedictine friars, honors bestowed by kings and the proud privilege to be identified as Sicily’s first licensed spirit.  Today the company, Fratelli Averna S.p.A., is run by the fourth generation of the Averna family and now includes the Friulian winery Villa Frattina and Piedmont confectioner Pernigotti.  By remaining firm to the traditions in which it was founded, Averna has grown and remained the number one spirit brand in Italy and leading Italian Amaro in markets around the world.

Averna Spirits - Tales of the Cocktail Luncheon - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

What is this Averna Amaro?  Simply; an after-dinner drink or digestivo.  However, there is nothing simple about this complex liqueur.  Averna is a complex spirit distilled from a delicate balance of flowers, herbs, dried fruits, spices and licorice with a touch of caramel.  This produces a full-bodied, bitter sweet finish to the taste buds.  Despite its classification as a digestivo, this liqueur is anything but.

I tried the Averna four ways:  traditionally on the rocks, in Duggan McDonnell’s signature cocktail the Vertigo, and in two more cocktails supplied by the company; the Intercontinental and Sicilian Triangle.

Averna on the rocks is a delicious blend of botanicals, luxuriantly textured and pleasantly composed which leave a unique balance of smooth bitter sweetness in its finish on the palate.  My experiences with after-dinner digestivos thus far have not had the polish in completion that Averna has mastered.  This is a beautifully, full bodied, complex sipping spirit.

Lime Wedge for Garnish

Stir lemon juice and ginger ale over ice in a highball glass leaving room for Averna.  Float Averna and garnish with a lime wedge.

The Vertigo is a refreshing highball drink made with ginger ale and a splash of lemon juice.  At first sip I thought it was average, but I built the drink in incorrect order and forgot to slip in a stir stick.  The Averna is a heavy aperitif, so it stays at the bottom of the glass if it is added first and time is not taken to gently stir.  My second sip was absolutely delightful.  There is a reason this is Duggan McDonnell’s signature cocktail.  The ginger ale is light enough to allow the Averna all of the glory in this drink with the perfect balance of lemon to give it that spring/summer feel.

Intercontinental

Intercontintental photo copyright Cheri Loughlin1 measure Averna

1 measure Cognac

1/2 measure Maraschino Liqueur

Orange Twist for Garnish

Combine all ingredients in a shaker and stir 30 times over ice.  Strain into cocktail glass and garnish with an orange twist.  (This one is a bit sweet.  Try adding a quarter ounce of lemon juice for tart or decrease the maraschino liqueur.  This is an excellent cocktail to tweak to your liking.)

The Intercontinental caught my eye in the recipe listings due to its use of maraschino liqueur and cognac.  The most common cocktail reference for maraschino liqueur is the Papa Doble or Hemingway Daiquiri.  A delicious cocktail if you have not tried one.  The intercontinental is very rich in color but comes across entirely too sweet for my tastes.  Possibly if some lemon juice were added to lend some tartness to the cocktail this could be cured.  I am not sure.  However, the Averna shines through magnificently and the maraschino liqueur is a perfect addition.  They both blend together well on the palate.  My thought is there are more cocktails to be rendered from the Averna and maraschino matchmaking.

Sicilian Triangle

Sicilian Triangle photo copyright Cheri Loughlin2 measures Averna

1 measure White Rum

1 measure Pomegranate Juice

1/2 measure Orange Juice

1/2 measure Lemon Juice

Splash of Pineapple Juice

Pineapple Wedge for Garnish

Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously over ice.  Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a pineapple wedge. (I used approximately 1/4 ounce of pineapple juice or less as a splash.)

For a bit of exotic, tropical fun the Sicilian Triangle is a must try on anyone’s Averna cocktail list.  It has a mix of rum and fruit juices along with the Averna to stir up good times.  With such a diverse blend of flavoring to this cocktail I was a little undecided as to whether the Averna would be able to hold its own in the drink.  With the first sip, pineapple is the primary flavor tasted.  Given only a moment, the lone pineapple flavor disappears leaving the real flavor of the cocktail to linger on the palate.  Once again, the Averna displays its true character throughout, leaving a well rounded mixed drink to enjoy in true Sicilian style.

Left to stand alone and sip or to rise above the rest in a cocktail glass, Averna definitely leaves its unique stamp on the spirit world.  With the unique flavor profile of this particular bitter sweet aperitif and its exceptional mixability, it is understandable how Averna has stood the test of time through four generations and is still the leading favorite Amaro of Italy.

Review: Bacardi Torched Cherry

The hum in the happy hour air this week sounds a lot like Bacardi Torched Cherry.  This little number arrived without red carpet or fan fare, but the buzz is significant.  The color might be clear, but the release of Dragon Berry prior to this puts this flavored rum expectation level at high alert cherry red.

According to the recent media release Bacardi Torched Cherry combines the flavors of Barbados cherries with the smooth infusion of Torch Plant aloe.  “Torch Plant aloe is a succulent, nectar-rich ingredient indigenous to South Africa.  It pairs ideally with Barbados cherries, also known as Acerola, a fruit that has recently received considerable attention for its versatility and sweet, robust flavor.” – Bacardi media release.  As with all of their flavored rum products, Bacardi supplies a tremendous selection of recipes for consumers to enjoy.

Bacardi Torched Cherry Tasting

Aroma: Burnt cherries, such as reduced in sugar.  Cough drop cherry scentBacardi Torched Cherry Neat photo copyright Cheri Loughlin similar to the slim fruited cherry ones I used to love as a child.  They were more pleasant than medicinal with sugary cherry flavor.

Tasted Neat: Very sweet immediately with easy cherry flavor that almost instantly flips to artificial cough drop cherry.  A little disappointing.  The flavor continues cherry in the finish, but flattens.

In my opinion Bacardi Torched Cherry is definitely meant for cocktail mixer rather than sipping independently.  The possibilities open wide with this one.  My thoughts go directly to recipes for fruit smoothies only rum versions.  Don’t necessarily go straight for the easy road with cola and Sprite toppers.  Bacardi Torched Cherry will most likely mix well with banana (yes, banana), coconut and the usual suspects of cranberry and orange juice.  I am loving the fact Bacardi created a creamsicle style drink with equal parts Bacardi Torched Cherry, Premium Orange Liqueur, Orange Juice and Cream (Shake on ice and strain into shot glasses) which could be consumed on the rocks or in cocktail form depending upon preference.

1 cup ice

Fresh Raspberries or Cherries Garnish

Combine all ingredients in a blender adding ice last. Blend until completely smooth. Pour into large cocktail glass. Garnish with fresh raspberries or cherries if desired.

This makes a great long sip for hot summer days.  Bacardi Torched Cherry remains predominant with layering of raspberry and blueberry.

Quartered Lime Wedges Garnish

Place ice in highball glass. Add ingredients in order given with simple syrup to taste preference.  Top with club soda. Garnish with small lime wedges inserted in glass. Stir.

The most obvious drink for this particular flavor seems to be the popular cherry limeade.  Rather than simply mixing Bacardi Torched Cherry and limeade, an old school rendition turns out a pucker worthy recipe for refreshing, summer sipper.  This drink has me visualizing warm summer sun, afternoons full of cotton dresses and smart sexy ladies puckering up with perfectly glossed red lips to sip worthy straws plunged into Torched Cherry limeades lining poolside bars.  Get one while they last.

Tasting: Odell Beer

Odell 5 and 90 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

As promised, I made it out to the Odell beer tasting sponsored by Johnson Brothers Fino the day before Super Bowl.  There was quite a spread of Super Bowl party treats provided by the highway 370 Bakers and of course Odell Beer.  I wasFun Tasting photo copyright Cheri Loughlin hoping the Odell Red Ale would make an appearance, but it had not been sent out yet.  I will catch that another time before it’s too late.

Of the two Odell samples offered, 5 Barrel Pale Ale and 90 Shilling, the latter was my favorite of the two.  90 Shilling seemed to have a bit more flavor with a slight mocha finish to it.  Since I’m not really a beer aficionado, I’ll leave the tasting specifics to the real experts and enthusiasts.  But what I will say is go out to local tastings and get to know the craft beers that are available in your area.  One, you’ll get to try new things.  Two, tastings offer a little fun.

Bulleit Rye Rocks - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinAroma: Light aroma. Not much notice of spice. Slight medicinal quality. Tang undertone, but minimal.

Taste: Hint of orange. Butterscotch. Very little sweetness. Heat. Some spice.

On Ice: Still uncovers slight medicinal flavor. Sharpness. Spice. Ice mellows the spirit slightly.

This spirit sort of flat-lines for me. Not enough flavor to match the heated wallop. Price point is attractive, but would loved to have seen a bit more flavorful personality out of this spirit.

Collingwood Tasting Notes

Handcrafted Blended Canadian Whisky

Toasted Maplewood Mellowed

40% Alcohol – 80 Proof

Quite impressive bottle design. However it is remotely difficult to remove the initial cover (it is sealed snuggly to the bottle) before opening the actual bottle top which lies below the cap.

Collingwood Canadian Whisky Neat - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinAroma: Marshmallow sweetness with rich caramel. Citrus. Cinnamon toast notes. Hint of maple syrup.

Taste: Perfume sweetness. Floral. Some burn. Candied quality without overly sweetness coming through. Bit of powder dryness in the after taste. Syrup element as it applies to a spirit. As if this is the thinned out version of maple syrup with quite a bit of spirited punch. Twinge of anise (licorice). Sort of like hard shell candy coated anise seed.

On Ice: Quite a bit of sweetness brought out when served over ice. More anise and floral notes than before.
