Batida de Shamrock
5 ounces Leblon Cachaça
6 lime halves- fresh squeezed
4 ounces Coconut Syrup
6 ounces Horchata (cinnamon rice milk)
15-20 sprigs of mint
Squeeze the juice of 6 lime halves into blender and add mint sprigs, coconut syrup, and horchata. Add crushed ice to the blender and add Leblon. Blend until smooth. Garnish with a mint sprig. Makes 2.

Single Malt Distillery Sets on Mission to Crowdsource Tasting Notes for Two Distinct Expressions
March 10, 2010 – New York: The Macallan® Single Malt Scotch has always encouraged Scotch enthusiasts and novel drinkers alike to enjoy a dram the way they want: whether it’s neat, in a cocktail, on the rocks, or with a splash of water. Now, on a mission to understand how enthusiasts experience the flavors of the world’s most renowned, The Macallan is cultivating a digital journey through select Sherry Oak and Fine Oak expressions that kicks off in Austin, Texas at SXSW Interactive 2010: The Macallan Tasting Note Project.
“The Macallan is known to be satisfyingly complex; however we’re interested to see what flavors really shine in two of our most celebrated expressions,” said Bob Dalgarno, The Macallan Whisky Maker. “It will be exciting to witness whisky lovers in the virtual sphere unite over common tastes and less common nuances.”
The Macallan will first introduce the project in the Registrant’s Lounge at SXSW in Austin by way of Twitter. Consumers both on-site at the festival and off-site in their hometowns will be encouraged to contribute tasting notes for two of the brand’s core expressions, The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Years Old and The Macallan Fine Oak 15 Years Old using the hashtags #Macallan12 and #Macallan15, respectively.
As these tweets are submitted, a topic cloud will be showcased live on-screen at The Macallan tasting lounge and also on The Macallan Blog, making this experience easily shareable. At the end of the week, The Macallan will be able to pinpoint the words and notes most frequently attributed to each expression. Additionally, everyone who contributes to The Macallan Tasting Note Project is entered to win a private tasting led by The Macallan Brand Ambassador for up to 10 friends in the city of his/her choice.

Virginians Can Raise a Toast to Spirits Tastings
–Blue Law Banning Spirits Tastings at ABC Stores Goes Away–
RICHMOND, VA – In a strong move toward modernizing Virginia’s alcohol laws, Republican Governor Bob McDonnell signed legislation knocking down a decades-old ban on liquor tasting events at ABC stores, according to the Distilled Spirits Council (DISCUS) which said the bill modernized an outdated law that had only allowed for beer and wine tastings.
House Bill 952, sponsored by Delegate S. Chris Jones, gives adult consumers the opportunity to sample up to three separate one-half ounce servings of spirits in any one calendar day at a pre-planned tasting event.
“In today’s economy it’s more important than ever to give customers the tools to make better purchasing decisions,” said DISCUS Vice President David Wojnar, noting that tastings are controlled events that must first be approved by the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. “Most consumers wouldn’t purchase a nice $40-$50 bottle of Scotch if they’ve never tasted it. Repealing the ban on spirits tastings is a great, modern convenience for Virginians that ultimately helps Virginia’s bottom line.”
HB 952 passed the House on February 12 by a count of 75-17 and the Senate on February 23 by a vote of 31-9. Governor McDonnell signed the bill into law yesterday and it takes effect July 1, 2010.
Forty-three states currently allow some form of spirits tasting. Thirty-one states, including Virginia, now allow spirits tastings at off-premise establishments, Wojnar noted.

Right now, in all corners of the globe, 24 of the world’s best bartenders are polishing their shakers, dusting off their muddlers, packing their skinniest pair of jeans and a few favorite, top secret ingredients. Yup, it’s only a week to go ‘til the 42BELOW Cocktail World Cup 2010 kicks off -it’s all about ‘Love, Drinks and Rock n Roll, Baby!’.
The bartenders are about to have the experience of a lifetime, a one off chance to take part in the world’s most extreme cocktail making competition in the home of 42BELOW, New Zealand. Contestants from the New York, London, Dublin, Milan, Rome, Paris, Sydney, Melbourne, Wellington and Auckland will assemble in Queenstown on Monday 22nd March for four days of cocktail making and adrenalin pumping challenges. Their every move (even the dodgy dance ones) will be scrutinized by four international judges, including the recently crowned American ‘bartender of the year’ Jim Meehan. 
“For the past few years, the 42BELOW Cocktail World Cup has drawn rave reviews from judges and contestants alike. After a week -long examination of each participants ability to work individually and as a team player with national bragging rights on the line, the competition pushes bartenders out of their comfort zone into real-time scenarios,” Meehan says, with a 42BELOW cocktail in his hand.
The competition will be set in some of the South Island’s most spectacular locations and includes ‘Modern Martini’, ‘Ready, Steady, Shake’ and the ‘Mocktail’ challenge. Contestants will also take part in a series of cocktail ‘summits’- educational workshops hosted by some of the most influential people in the industry. And, in true 42BELOW style, there’ll be a fair few surprises too. “This group of bartenders work at the best bars, clubs and parties around the world. We’re honoured they’re coming on tour with us in New Zealand and I know they’ll be blown away by what 42BELOW has in store for them next week,” says 42BELOW CEO Paul Dibbayawan.
From Queenstown this motley group of mixologists will head north to New Zealand’s capital, Wellington, home of the country’s hippest night spots. They’ll have time to take in some of the sights, namely an oddly shaped parliament building and a few hairy hobbits. They’ll also have time to perfect their signature drink ahead of a jaw dropping grand final event on March 27th at Wellington’s Old Museum Building. The teams will take to the stage alongside real life rockers, kiwi chart toppers Midnight Youth and the winners of the 42BELOW Cocktail World Cup will be crowned.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake Shot – adaptation by Cheri Loughlin, The Intoxicologist
1/2 ounce SKYY Infusions Pineapple Vodka
1/4 ounce Godiva White Chocolate
1/2 ounce Pineapple Juice
Splash Licor 43
Maraschino Cherry
Drip several drops maraschino cherry juice in bottom of shot glass. Slit bottom of maraschino cherry and prop on rim of shot glass. Set aside. Combine liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into prepared shot glass.
The current fad sweeping trendy NYC and Cali bars received one mention – the Pickle Back shot. This Intoxicologist is not completely convinced with the long term popularity of the Pickle Back shot yet, but the mind is still open if the spirit is willing. It definitely has not caught on in Middle America or in an Irish bar where I recently discovered locals of Kansas City throw back a double shot referred to as the Bear Shot. The recipient of a Bear Shot first downs an Irish Car Bomb followed quickly by a Jager Bomb. The Jager Bomb consists of a shot of Jagermeister dropped into a glass of Red Bull. This concoction is a regular feature at O’Dowd’s Little Dublin in Kansas City, MO. The bartender says he usually limits customers to one Bear Shot per night.
LAZERLIBBY from Twitter clues us in that “Jack’s Bistro in Baltimore has a Peanut Butter and Jelly shot! It’s awesome!!” Peanut butter is an eternal favorite and classic peanut butter and jelly sandwiches seem to return everyone to memories of youth, freedom and fun days of carefree living. No wonder this shot is such a hit. Though Jack’s recipe isn’t available here, I’ve crafted a version of the Peanut Butter and Jelly Shot and hope hits the spot.

1 ounce Frangelico
3/4 ounce Cassis
1/4 part Castries Peanut Liqueur
Combine liquids in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake. Strain into two shot glasses or one shooter.
The Chocolate Cake shot is another favorite of many. It is the perfect liquid birthday cake in case anyone is out celebrating. Chocolate Cake is mentioned in the Top Ten Popular Shot Recipes post with several more popular shots such as the Buttery Nipple, Tweaked Buttery Nipple and Purple Hooter.
Lemon Drop martinis, cocktails and Mocktails make the rounds as refreshing sippers especially during spring and summer. But Friday and Saturday nights were designed for smaller sips where this sweet tart concoction is concerned. There are many variations of the Lemon Drop Shot from so simple with just citrus vodka and triple sec to downright involved with citrus vodka, triple sec, sour mix, simple syrup, Rose’s Lime and fresh lemon. The Lemon Drop Shot recipe below uses four ingredients plus optional garnish for quick build and fantastic pucker up lemon drop sweet tart flavor.

3/4 ounce Three Olives Citrus Vodka
1/4 ounce DeKuyper Triple Sec
1/4 ounce Pallini Limoncello
1/4 ounce Simply Lemonade

Lemon Wedge
Dip half of lemon wedge in sugar. Set aside. Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into shot glass. Shoot. Bite lemon and enjoy the sugar. – Five more Lemon Drop cocktail variations may be found by following the hyperlinks in the paragraph above.
Three Olives Bubble Vodka reaches wide audiences with its bubblicious bubble gum fruit flavor. Tiffany LaRue Spooner from Facebook mentioned her preference for Three-O Bubble Vodka with Watermelon Pucker. Several Three-O Bubble cocktails and four shots have been designed including the Mad Melon Bubble Gum Shot.
Bob Stafford suggested an interesting Bandana Shot: Fill a shot glass half full with Coke. Spread a bandana tightly over the glass. Float Captain Morgan’s Rum through the top of the bandana. This creates a two layer effect with the Coke chasing the rum leaving one with a nice vanilla and Coke aftertaste… “and a cruddy bandana at the end of the evening.”

This morning the outlook changed with continued lows and blur of white filtering from the sky once again. This nasty white mess has rained on my spring parade and put a damper on my day. Ironically the Grey Goose Vodka cocktail below happens to still fit in perfectly today. It is the ‘Are we there yet’ and ‘Hurry up spring’ recipe which brings the feel of the tropics indoors. Close the blinds, turn up the heat or build a fire for warmth. Blare Caribbean tunes from the speakers and start marinating the Jamaican Jerk chicken. Rather than venture out for warming spirits, keep your spring right at home with a Grey Goose Staycation cocktail.
GREY GOOSE Staycation
1-1/2 parts GREY GOOSE La Poire
1/2 part Licor 43
1 part mango puree
1 part lime juice
1/2 part simple syrup
1 mango slice

“The corporate sponsorships of Captain Morgan and its British parent, Diageo, PLC, are no longer welcome,” announced Parade Chairperson Madelyn Lugo. Diageo’s brands, Johnny Walker, Jose Cuervo and Captain Morgan, have had a 30 year relationship with the Parade.
“This Parade is about pride and respect, and Captain Morgan has shown us neither,” she asserted. “They are abandoning us in exchange for $2.7 billion in taxpayer-funded corporate handouts that would otherwise be used to meet the educational and health needs of Puerto Rico, where 16 percent are unemployed and 1 in 3 lives below the poverty line.”
Two years ago, the U.S. Virgin Islands lured Captain Morgan to St. Croix by promising to split $6 billion in anticipated revenues from rebates of federal excise tax it expects to receive on the rum. The rebates are the principal form of federal assistance to both Territories, generating $470 million for Puerto Rico last year.
The deal has been sharply criticized by labor groups, who complain that the new distillery on St. Croix, also being financed by federal excise tax rebates, will employ at least 330 fewer workers.
Florida Republican Senator George LeMieux has announced plans to offer an amendment this week to the proposed jobs bill that will effectively scuttle the deal by tying future excise tax rebates to the respective Territories’ populations, rather than the place of production.
The National Puerto Rican Coalition, which has led the fight against the Captain Morgan deal, said today’s decision by Parade organizers will put “serious pressure” on New York Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. “New York represents the greatest concentration of Puerto Ricans living on the mainland,” said NPRC President Rafael Fantauzzi. “They’ll be watching to see whether their Senators stand with us, or with a British liquor company.”

Whether the evening before has gone long into the night or the day began earlier than usual, mornings seem to beg for an additional cup or extra pot of coffee to spur creative juices for the coming day and week. A hot, steamy straight pour is usually my preferred choice for the first rounds of java, but every once in a while a delicious dessert style cup of coffee stirs my interest. The Razz is a warm, creamy dessert style coffee for any time of year. Since The Razz coffee recipe contains no alcohol it may be enjoyed day or evening.

1-1/2 ounce Half & Half
5 ounces Hot Coffee
Whipped Cream Garnish

Over on The Intoxicologist Facebook Fan page Barbara Winters recommended a cocktail based upon what days of the week one chooses to consume a cocktail: “Monday - Thursday” it is all about Absolut. Barbara’s assessment of the cocktail, “Yummy!” – Intoxicologist Notation: Barbara didn’t give a name for her cocktail creation or measurements, so I’ve given it the good old fashioned American try at building and naming it. This is an excellent choice cocktail for relaxing at the end of the day. It is light and fruity on taste without weighing one down on caloric intake. Since it is a long drink it is also filling, leaving one with a fuller feeling after a single cocktail.

3 parts Light Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice
Splash of 7-Up
Build ingredients in a highball glass over ice adding 7-Up last. Stir & serve. If one were to use Diet 7-Up this cocktail would be lower in calorie overall. The vodka weighs in at approximately 92 calories, grapefruit juice at 15 calories and Diet 7-Up at zero making Ruby Weekdays a 107 calorie cocktail – perfect for lower calorie weekday consumption. Chinese Five-Spice Kettle Corn

Katie says, “I eat popcorn almost every night and I like to experiment with different flavors. I make this Chinese Five-Spice Kettle Corn to enjoy with cocktails and also package it up in take out boxes for a party favor for my guests.”
3/4 cup popcorn
1/4 cup canola oil
3 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons Chinese 5 Spice powder
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
In a pot with a tight-fitting lid over medium heat, combine popcorn, oil, sugar, 5 Spice powder, and salt. Shake constantly. When popcorn begins to pop, lower heat to medium-low. Continue to shake until popping begins to slow and transfer to a bowl. Drizzle with melted butter.
Yield: 6 to 8 servings - Prep Time: 5 minutes - Cook Time: 5 minutes
