Conjuring Up Halloween Shots

Four Halloween Shots - photo property of Cheri Loughlin - The Intoxicologist

For some the most wonderful time of the year begins with the sprinkling of snow and pretty packages wrapped with sparkly ribbon.  For others the real magic begins earlier with the weaving of witchcraft, telling spine tingling stories in the dead of night and sipping ghoulish delights from bubbling cauldrons teeming with mysterious potions.  There’s no need to rely on a wicked witch (or bartender for that matter) to stir up batches of bizarre brew for your night of mischief.  Look into the crystal ball of spirited Halloween shots and pick your poison.  Please remember a little black magic goes a long way, so please sip responsibly.

The Grim Reaper knocks at the door to steal your soul and leaves a bloodied mess of skeletal remains.  Within this nightmarish tragedy of rattling bones lies a chaotic swell of Bloodied Brains.

Don’t let a little innocence fool you.  This rebellious little phantom charms its way into the pleasure zone with its mix of tequila and chocolate then gives off a vaporously naughty bite with a hint of Absinthe.  You might find yourself sipping and savoring rather than shooting this ghostly teaser all at once.

Mixing Halloween Whiskey Mischief into Halloween

When Halloween falls on a weekend, paranormal partying often begins as soon as the work week ends and continues throughout the weekend.  Whether you’re a diehard straight liquor enthusiast or sugared up cocktail fan, this particular holiday brings out the party spirit in almost everyone.  For bourbon and whiskey lovers who want a little mischief mixed into their grisly celebration, plan ahead with a few spell inducing potions that scream ‘Halloween.”  Drops of ‘blood’, oozing foam and a little black magic will horrify the most gruesome phantoms during the Day of the Dead.

It’s been a long week, long month, long year.  Thirsting for more?  Devil’s Night is ideal for an Infusion of spirited nature.  Though this enchanted drink sips at the soul with lighter touch on the tongue, don’t let it fool you.  Its spirit still trickles through your veins, casting refreshing pleasure to dull the senses.

Creepy capes, fanged teeth dripping with blood and sleek black hair; this is how vampires were written into plot lines and movie scenes in days gone by.  Modern vampires have lost their touch with scripts of drama and teenage angst.  Where oh where have the coffins, capes and crosses gone?  The world misses a good lust worthy vampire.

It’s difficult being good when you’re dressed in a fringed flapper dress, fishnet stockings and stiletto shoes.  That’s the wickedly fabulous part of Halloween; dressing in costume, playing the part under pretense that it isn’t really you.  Oddly enough, the attire speaks volumes as to who the person is inside.  Be temptingly wicked and live the fantasy.

Wicked Rye Halloween Recipe copyright Cheri LoughlinWicked Rye – created by Cheri Loughlin

1 Teaspoon Absinthe

2 parts Jim Beam Rye

1 Lemon Slice – Squeezed

2 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters

Place crushed ice in an old fashioned glass. Drizzle absinthe around outer edges of ice.  Set aside.  Place Jim Beam Rye, fresh squeezed lemon juice and bitters in a mixing glass with ice.  Stir.  Make sure absinthe has coated bottom half of old fashioned glass and toss out.  Strain rye mixture into emptied old fashioned glass.  If the Wicked Rye is a little too tart for your taste, add a wee amount of simple syrup.  You’ll find Wicked Rye is simply a slight variation of the classic cocktail; Sazerac.

Once upon a time Halloween was called Samhain in a few Gaelic languages.  The game of apple bobbing originated in a time when apples were associated with love and fertility.  It was believed that the first person from the group to bite into an apple would be the first person to marry.  If a young girl placed the apple she bobbed under her pillow that evening, it is said she would dream of the man she would marry.  It seems a bit simpler to walk into a bar, order a drink and start meeting people.  Don’t you think?

There are those cocktail recipes and drinks that slip down effortlessly one after the other.  By the time “Closing Time” rings out through the bar speakers there are already embarrassing photos posted on Facebook and misspelled jargon spewing on Twitter.  Someone is slurring, “I love you,” to all the wrong people and either forgetting to tip the bartender (never good) or handing over all their money to the bartender (they’ll leave you cab fare since you forgot to tip last time).  These are the cocktails that just taste so darn good someone always wants another.  But please, slow down and have a glass of water, tea or soda between drinks to keep your wits.

National Comic Book Day: Super Hero Cocktail Recipes

Do you follow a favorite super hero through the pages of comic books?  If so, you might be interested to know that today has been set aside as National Comic Book Day.  Perhaps a masked man wearing spandex tights will be lurking around the corner handing out free comic books.  Better yet a damsel in distress (with broken high heel shoe of course) about to be preyed upon by some evil bad guy will be in your path today and you can swoop in to save the day.  You will be the super hero of your own comic book.

Who are the favorite super hero comic book stars of all time anyway?  I don’t really have the answer to that question, but the top answer on my Twitter page hands down was Spiderman.

White Spider - Comic Book Cocktails - photo property of Cheri LoughlinWhite Spider

1 ounce Gin

1 ounce Lemon Juice

1/2 ounce Cointreau

1 teaspoon Simple Syrup

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a cocktail glass.

White Spider starts sweet first and then moves to tart quite quickly.  Right away it smoothes again with a vanilla finish leaving one with the feeling that another sip is in order to decipher what just happened.  This is similar to extremely well made lemonade that will come around full circle and bite you where it really counts if you keep sipping and wondering what just happened.  Soon enough the White Spider will let you know it just did you in.

3/4 ounce White Crème de Cacao

3/4 ounce Heavy Cream

Grated Nutmeg Garnish

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake until cream becomes nice and frothy.  Strain into a cocktail glass.  Garnish with grated nutmeg.

Frostbite makes a fabulous dessert style cocktail.  Use tequila with kick to it; something with depth of character, spicy in base.  Skip the mixto and go for 100% agave with pepper, vanilla and caramel note to complement the cacao and nutmeg.  This drink recipe isn’t too heavy on sweetness, but long on satisfaction.

Batman fans are truly in luck.  As one Twitter user pointed out Batman’s character strengths were his lack of ‘super human power’.  His super power happened to be detective work and dedication to honing his physical perfection.  It didn’t hurt that he was massively wealthy and could afford every super toy imaginable, but that’s another story.  Batman’s character list is long as well as the cocktail recipe possibilities that could be paired with any number of them friend or foe.

This is just a fun little cocktail.  The Reluctant Tabby plays up Dubonnet Rouge with fantastic appeal.  Possibly it’s the Scotch that downplays the sweet factor of limoncello.  Whatever it is, it just works.  Dubonnet just rolls over the tongue with luscious sophistication and flavor.  Love this little sipper.  Gary Regan created a winner here…of course.

The most bizarre, albeit fun, answer I received when asking about superhero favorites was Bananaman.  This was one I’d never heard of, but saw a short video firsthand as ‘proof’ of his existence.  It appears he begins as a boy, so it seems appropriate this superhero begin with a Mocktail recipe rather than cocktail.

Dying a Sweet Death for St. Patrick’s Day

Absinthe is a well-known favorite spirit of renowned artists and literary giants such as Van Gogh, Edgar Allen Poe and Oscar Wilde. Since this spirit is once again available in the United States, it has seen a surge in popularity as the authentic way to add a touch of history to classic cocktails. The magical aura of this spirit fits in perfectly with St. Patrick’s Day with its greenish hue.

Oscar Night Starlet

Oscar approaches, which means it is time to plan Oscar watch parties.  As the dictionary points out a starlet is a young actress on the rise to become a future star.  Many walk the red carpet each year in hope of becoming the next “big thing.”  The Starlet Cocktail creates a huge splash as the next big thing with the flavors of light anise, hints of citrus, deep raspberry and effervescence tickling at the nose in anticipation of the excitement to unfold.

Thinking About a Fresh New Beau

It doesn’t matter whether the man sharing bed space has been in a woman’s life for a week, a month or years; she still wants to know what goes on inside his head.  No matter how much chatter goes on in the kitchen, living room or cocktail bar the real burning question women want to know is ‘do these jeans make me look fat?’  All kidding aside, everyone has insecurities as well as desire to fulfill fantasies.  The only way to appease the apprehension of what a man might be thinking is to ask.  Judy Dutton, writer for Redbookmag.com, did exactly that.  Judy cut right to the chase and got to the heart of the matter by asking men what they really think about during sex.  This insight into what men think will have anyone primed for a steamy evening for two.

Bulldog Gin: Contemporary Gin in Classic Cocktails

Bulldog smells like gin, tastes like gin, but doesn’t have quite the same bite as typical gin possibly due to its lower alcohol content.  Many gins are bottled at a higher proof range of 90ish while Bulldog Gin is bottled at the same proof as vodka; 80 proof.  The flavor is light, a wee bit floral and softer on juniper than a few brisker gins such as Right Gin and G’vine Nouaison.  Bulldog’s founder, Anshuman Vohra, achieved the goal of lighter tasting gin with an aesthetically appealing bottle for the contemporary consumer.  The bottle draws one’s eye to it with stylish junkyard dog fascination, but the flavor lacks the brusque character that is closely associated with many classic gins with brighter, crisper tasting flavor personality.  Bulldog comes across a little rounder along the edges.   Perhaps it is the unique accents of lavender, lotus and dragon’s eye that charm their way into the flavor profile.

For traditional gin martini enthusiasts Bulldog’s bark is a little flashier than its bite, but it still makes a nice addition to the gin category.  Even so, it is always a great idea to take contemporary styled gin and whip up a classic cocktail or two.

While I love a hint of absinthe flavor, I don’t like it to overpower a drink.  Rather than add a dash of Pernod risking a bit too much I washed the ice in the mixing glass with Pernod and then strained it out.  The Dubarry is rather interesting, possibly even bizarre.  Just when I think the Pernod will overtake the cocktail it fades into resistance and that is a rather difficult feat for a spirit over the likes of absinthe!  There is this particular melting vanilla butteriness in the cocktail that I like.  The Dubarry is not my favorite classic cocktail by far.  I can’t even say I could consume an entire one, but halving the portions to a smaller cocktail might make it just the hint of different a palate needs for a sense of the past once in a while.  It’s good, but different.  A diversion from the usual; a little like Bulldog Gin.

Jingle My Bells Christmas Cocktails

The holiday spirit abounds from the time Thanksgiving weekend begins to the time New Year counts down.  Cocktail parties for the office, friends and neighbors provide occasions for gatherings with differing needs.  One might need punches and coffees for neighbors stopping in for a moment or two with greetings.   Family and friend type holiday parties require classic cocktails and specifically chosen martinis to suit particular palates since the gathering means hours of nibbling finger food and chatting over good times.  Office parties might suggest simpler martinis and cocktail recipes with fewer ingredients that still keep within the classic style yet appeal to a broader audience.

Put a little Holiday Cheer into your season with a few of the seasonal drink recipes below. Stay tuned to The Intoxicologist site for more festive cocktail recipes for all your party needs.
