Bourbon Classic Cocktail: Brainstorm
This long lost classic cocktail, according to Difford’s Guide 7, contains a beautiful orange aroma from the twist with lots of spice. Buffalo Trace Bourbon is almost lost at first taste, but warms to the soul with the second or third savoring sip. Classic cocktails are not for the ‘gulp and go’ sort. They are for enjoying and attentive appreciation for the craftsmanship that went into the art of the cocktail so many generations ago. They are also for relishing the spirit! Brainstorm is a tad on the sweet side, but does not contain a ‘sugary’ feel.

Muddled Old Fashioned
Muddled Old Fashioned – ala The Intoxicologist, inspired by twitter.com/Mr_Cocktail
3 ounces Buffalo Trace Bourbon
2 muddled orange slices
1/4 ounce simple syrup
4 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
Maraschino cherry and orange slice garnish
Muddle orange slices and simple syrup in bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add Buffalo Trace Bourbon and Peychaud’s Bitters. Fill with ice. Shake. Strain into an Old Fashioned glass filled two thirds with ice. Garnish with maraschino cherry and an orange slice.
You might be thinking the use of simple syrup or straining out the muddled mess doesn’t make this very ‘old fashioned,’ but this is for those who veer to the more contemporary side of life. The Muddled Old Fashioned is for those who prefer silky smooth over sugary grit and don’t like floating bobbles in their cocktail. Fresh orange adds freshness with just enough sweetness to take away any bite or dryness one might associate with traditional bourbon cocktails. Buffalo Trace comes through with more than just a suggestion of bourbon. This is light, yet warming as the flavor of caramel and possibly that of its origin in barrel aging melds its character to the fruit.
