6 Easy Two Ingredient Duo Drinks

The Godmother drink is classified as a “Duo” drink. Duo drinks mix a base spirit with liqueur. In this case amaretto and vodka are used. In the case of the Godfather duo drink, scotch and amaretto are used in the same ratio. Other variations include the Royal Widow and Widow’s Cork. Find the base spirit to liqueur ratio you prefer for the most enjoyable experience.

Godmother

2 ounces Vodka

1 ounce Amaretto

Combine liquids in Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice. Stir.

Royal Widow

1-1/2 ounce Canadian Whisky

1-1/2 ounce Amaretto

Combine liquids in Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice. Stir.

Widow’s Cork

1 ounce Irish Whiskey

1 ounce Amaretto

Combine liquids in Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice. Stir.

Another common Duo drink can be found bottled at your local liquor store or you can mix it in a glass yourself. The B & B cocktail was one of the first RTD (ready to drink) bottled cocktails on the market way back in the day.

B and B

1 ounce Brandy or Cognac

1 ounce Benedictine

Combine liquids in Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice. Stir. Or… Place liquids in snifter and serve neat.

One could say the Green Hornet and Stinger cocktails are one in the same. They both contain the same base spirit, same liqueur and in the same recipe ratio. The difference is the Green Hornet contains green crème de menthe and the Stinger uses white crème de menthe. The ultimate taste ends up the same no matter if you use white or green crème de menthe. Of course there are variations in exact recipe amounts depending on personal taste. Play around with the recipe and tweak it to your liking.

Green Hornet

3 ounces Brandy

1 ounce Green Crème de Menthe

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir or shake according to preference. Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Or… Combine liquids in large rocks glass over fresh ice. Stir.

Another exceedingly popular liqueur ingredient in Duo drinks is coffee liqueur. The Black Russian is an excellent example. Variations include the Dirty Mother with brandy and the Brave Bull with tequila.

Dirty Mother

1-1/2 ounce Brandy

1/2 ounce Coffee Liqueur

Combine liquids in Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice. Stir.

Another delicious Duo drink that should make any “must try” drink list is the Rusty Nail. The Rusty Nail is an excellent crowd pleaser drink that’s easy to make and serve. It contains scotch and Drambuie.

Russian Fucker

There’s a shot for everything and that includes humoring the funny bone, sugaring the sweet tooth and getting wasted within seconds. This one captures the attention by name (I didn’t name it by the way), messes one up if taken in rapid succession, but makes a terrific sipping drink if allowed to mellow out over time. Please use discretion when choosing your method of consumption.

1/3 measure Vodka

1/3 measure Amaretto

1/3 measure Canadian Whisky

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into shot glass. Serve and shoot ice cold.

For those of you who prefer sipping over shooting, this makes an excelling drink for relaxing at the end of the day. Serve this on the rocks, neat or shake it up over ice to chill and aerate and serve in rocks glass without ice for smooth sipping.

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake or stir to blend and chill. Strain into rocks glass over fresh ice.

Next time you run across a shot or shooter you think sounds like something you might want to actually taste rather than throw back, try it out shaken over ice and strained in a cocktail glass or poured over ice in a rocks glass. You might be surprised that the shot tastes a lot better at a slower pace than you thought. Then again, I’ve seen some of those shots….Some of them are aptly named like Toxic Waste, Nuclear Spill, and even a Dirty Ashtray. No thanks.

Review: Collingwood Canadian Whisky

Collingwood Tasting Notes

Handcrafted Blended Canadian Whisky

Toasted Maplewood Mellowed

40% Alcohol – 80 Proof

Quite impressive bottle design. However it is remotely difficult to remove the initial cover (it is sealed snuggly to the bottle) before opening the actual bottle top which lies below the cap.

Collingwood Canadian Whisky Neat - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinAroma: Marshmallow sweetness with rich caramel. Citrus. Cinnamon toast notes. Hint of maple syrup.

Taste: Perfume sweetness. Floral. Some burn. Candied quality without overly sweetness coming through. Bit of powder dryness in the after taste. Syrup element as it applies to a spirit. As if this is the thinned out version of maple syrup with quite a bit of spirited punch. Twinge of anise (licorice). Sort of like hard shell candy coated anise seed.

On Ice: Quite a bit of sweetness brought out when served over ice. More anise and floral notes than before.

Collingwood Canadian Whisky sample for review provided by representatives of Brown-Forman.

Reader Question: What to Make with Sambuca

Bartender Shaking Cocktail - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin - 2

Tzvika from Israel wrote in saying:

“I just spent four hours reading your blog…and it is just amazing!  I have a little question.  I got a bottle of black Sambuca…what kind of cocktails can I make with it.  Thank you.”

Tzvika,

First of all, thank you for taking so much time to pour through the material on my site.  It is wonderful that you found it so informative.  My regret is that you did not find everything you were looking for.  However, I am so happy you decided to take the time to email me.

Sambuca is an Italian liqueur flavored with aniseed that is most often found in clear or “white” form.  Other varieties are deep blue in color, referred to as black Sambuca, and bright red, red Sambuca.  Black Sambuca usually has a hit of lemon zest flavoring along with the anise.

The most common ways of serving Sambuca is neat, on the rocks, with fresh water added, or in coffee in place of sugar.  Sambuca con mosca (neat with coffee beans floated atop) is a common Italian way of serving Sambuca.  Flaming Sambuca is also interesting and eye catching as there really is nothing like setting alcohol on fire before throwing it down the gullet.

Red Carpet Cocktails for Classic Glamour Goddesses

A real red carpet night out with the stars begins with red carpet cocktails with the oldies but goodies movie stars. Back in the day glamour wasn’t just something movie stars slipped into on Oscar night. Stars shined as if buffed and polished by the big wigs who shaped every nth of their career. Cocktail hour gatherings were met with tuxes and cocktail dresses with swanky sips in classy night clubs. Red carpet cocktails were defined by the people who sipped and shaped the movie industry.

Well said and could definitely be applied to mixing and measuring cocktails or many other worthwhile ventures this Sex Goddess might have had in mind. Mae West is another non-drinking woman of film who made the number 15 slot on the American Film Legends list. Mae pushed the envelope on more than one occasion, but one prime example: She named the first play she ever wrote ‘Sex.’ Of course, one of my favorite quotes from this marvelous woman of film… “When I’m good I’m very good, but when I’m bad I’m even better.” My kind of woman.

Whiskey Quotes & Cocktails

Whiskey spans the globe in a broad range of styles, flavors and varieties. No matter where the bottle pours it seems the preferred manner of consuming the spirit is neat or on the rocks. However the vast flavor profile of each individual whiskey creates a wealth of opportunity for cocktail sampling and springboard for new creations.

Celebrating Single

Move over couples. Singles have their day. It’s Singles Awareness Day; S.A.D. This singles only holiday is the alternative celebration to the ‘most romantic couples only’ holiday; Valentine’s Day. Some choose to observe Singles Awareness (or Appreciation) Day on Valentine’s Day, but the day after sounds like the perfect time for a Girl’s Night Out on the town to me. Cheers!

Soul Kiss Cocktail for Lovers

The Soul Kiss Cocktail provides the perfect recipe for snuggle success.  This old style cocktail adds charm to cool evenings and cozy occasions with its dry vermouth and Dubonnet Rouge inclusion.  Rather than use Canadian Whiskey the original recipe called for I’ve substituted Tennessee Whiskey.  Soul Kiss Cocktail contains a wee amount of bitterness on the back end, but a tad more Dubonnet Rouge adjustment would fix that in a jiffy.  Take advantage of cooler temperatures and heat things up with a drink recipe embracing the essence of the season; Soul Kiss Cocktail.
