EPIC Peach Vodka Tasting Notes

Color: ClearEpic Classic - Peach Vodka 045 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Aroma: Peach for sure. Sweet succulent peach. Not sugary peach, but juicy peach. No burn.

Tasted Neat: Sweet! Not as sweet as liqueurs, but was definitely surprised at the sweetness in this 35% alcohol flavored vodka. Some flavored vodkas of this same alcohol content are not nearly as sweet. Peach flavor is very good. Ripe peach. Some burn. Slight artificial flavor in the aftertaste, but nice juice peach in the initial taste.

Mouth Feel: Medium. Bit thinner than the EPIC Classic, but still rolls over the tongue rather nicely.

Epic Peach - Stoli Peachik Comparison 056 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Comparable Spirit: Compared this to Stoli Peachik which contains peach flavor and is the same 35% alcohol content. EPIC Peach is much sweeter with more peach flavor and less burn.

Possible Uses, Pairings and / or Cocktails: I see fresh spring cocktails in my future. Variations on Fuzzy Navels for sure. Simple Peach Vodka and Sprite (Zero if watching the girlish figure) or Soda would be a breeze.

EPIC Vodka has a few recommendations as well…

Splash Peach Schnapps

1 teaspoon Lime Juice

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into chilled martini glass. Though they didn’t call for it, I think a fresh or even frozen peach slice would make a wonderful garnish!

Barefoot Mistletoe Cosmo

Cosmopolitan cocktails were once all the rage when sipped by celebrities and glamorized in Girls Night Out settings in popular television shows. They received not so pleasant reviews by trendy mixologists and cocktail bars when they became so common every cocktail menu in the country listed a Cosmo as signature drink. They were often sloppily made, sugary and cotton candy pink. However, the Cosmo is a contemporary classic that has remained a cocktail favorite of many; myself included.

Every fabulous classic cocktail and contemporary classic inspires a new generation of cocktails. With wine cocktails rising in popularity it just makes sense to spin a new favorite to sample and enjoy. After all, the whole concept of cocktails and happy hour is having fun with good friends and good spirits. Enjoy a happy holiday season!Barefoot Mistletoe Cosmo - Cheri Loughlin Cocktail Development Services

What Are You Drinking?

I bumped into my neighbor at the liquor store the other day and we got into a conversation about what we liked to drink. After our standbys were discussed, he asked if I’d ever heard of a Cosmo. I told him I liked them, but only when made properly. Otherwise they tend to be overly sweet. He agreed; they had to be made properly.

And then he got meLadys Cosmo - National Grand Marnier Day - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

He said, when people put too much Cosmo in the drink, it makes it way too sweet. I was a bit confused for a second and I suppose the confusion showed on my face. Too much Cosmo in the drink? He said he thought I knew what a Cosmo was; The bottle of Cosmo. He said it was a shame when people use too much of it, because (and he motions with his hands) it’s about this big and costs X. (It runs $14 to $18 depending upon your area).

I told him I’d never used the premix Cosmo, only the actual recipe. He was literally stunned. He had no idea there was a real recipe for a Cosmo; just that it was some sort of bottled mix. So I told him briefly what was in it.

Citrus Vodka, Cointreau, Lime Juice, Cranberry and Orange Twist Garnish ~> Cosmo Link

I didn’t think he could surprise me again, but…

He didn’t know what Cointreau was…

High end orange liqueur; not triple sec. And I walked him over to the liqueurs and showed him various other premium orange liqueurs, too. I lose track of the fact that liquor shelves are filled with so many spirits that those I find commonplace might not be so common to everyone.

He said it was time for me to have another party very soon. Cocktail sampling session with tasting is most likely what will happen. But that’s ok. I love introducing people to new flavors and teaching them a few basics that they can take back for their own home bar and party use.

The Point of the Story

My neighbor is not a newbie drinker. He is a professional, married and has grandchildren. He was a regular at the bar I worked at a few years back. I’ve seen him drink beer, cocktails and straight liquor. Without generalizing people, he is just like you, me and every person reading this. He knows what he likes to drink and chooses to drink it. The difference between my neighbor and some who choose to look around at what’s going on in the cocktail world is he just doesn’t know the options that are available for the things he already likes to drink.

A side note; the bottled Cosmo mix he’s buying already has all the ingredients in it. It’s a Ready To Drink bottled cocktail. He’s mixing it with more liquor and ingredients to get the right flavor for his taste. Straight from the bottle is just too sweet for his taste and it doesn’t match the amount of bang for his buck he’d like from a cocktail. I imagine this is the same for many people.

I’d Like Your Input

This is where I think everyone’s input toward cocktail discussion is useful. Everyone has a “go to” drink or handful of favorite drinks that they have tweaked to their liking. The drink might be as simple as a Gin & Tonic, a favorite premix taken to the next level with a few extra additions or a tweak on a classic or Tonic photo copyright Cheri Loughlincontemporary cocktail that just sends the sip to the next stage of flavor goodness. This isn’t rocket science. It doesn’t take a master mixologist with seventeen ingredients consisting of special infusions and homemade bitters or a bartender who’s been behind the stick for six months or six years to make suggestions on what they do to make their drink fit their flavor palate. How you make your drink at home might be just the idea someone six states away or half a world away reads about and thinks… Why didn’t I think of that?

What Are You Drinking

I want to know What Are You Drinking? Is it simply Rum & Coke? Tell me. Give me the measurements you use, any special tweaks that make it stand out whether it’s bitters or garnish and don’t forget to let me know how you serve it; over ice, straight up, neat, tall glass, short glass… you get the idea. And I would love, love, love a photo. Take that photo with a phone, app, digital camera… whatever you’ve got. Again, perfection isn’t the goal.

National Grand Marnier Day

Ok, so you think you’ve tasted THE Cosmo… maybe you have. It isn’t bright pink by the way. It isn’t so sugary sweet that you pucker up as you swallow it down. That’s something else entirely… The Lady’s Cosmo sets the tone for classic with orange bitters that hit the high note of “yea, that’s what I’m sayin’”. If there isn’t an orange sitting around to zest or flame for that matter, no worries. Bitter up and call it good. This one is a go getter all on its own.

Stoli: You Had Me at Cherri

Stoli Wild Cherri for Review photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Stoli Vodka’s newest release comes in the form of Wild Cherri flavor. First thought that crossed my mind upon the reveal of this new spirit; It’s pretty cool to pop open a bottle for review that so closely spells out my name on the label. Just dropping one letter from the Cherri and I could have fudged to all my friends at Christmas that this bottle was a personalized gift from Stoli to me to them. Alas…

Aroma: No burn, light sweetness, tart cherry. Plump cherry feel in the nose. Makes the mouth water a bit in anticipation. Hint of familiar Stoli Vodka aroma in the faintest follow through – buttery roundness. BStoli Wild Cherri Tasted Neat photo copyright Cheri Loughliny the way, if you haven’t tried Stoli as a solid vodka for your liquor cabinet for mixing cocktails or drinking in a straight up martini, it’s high time you did. Value priced, quality spirit with long standing reputation. Try it.

Taste: All cherry no doubt. Not quite biting into fresh cherry, but rather something edgier. Hint of cough syrup flavor reflection, but not saccharine style or powdery burn like some flavored vodkas manage in their infusion approach. Cough syrup likeness is more of an association of familiarity rather than spot on resemblance of the actual taste. The flavor is well executed. Does not leave poor or sticky aftertaste. Instead the flavor leaves the palate subtly, priming the taste buds for another sip.

Flavored vodkas do have their place in the market. They are easy mixers and even easier to create mini drinks otherwise known as shots or shot-tails. These mini mixers are the corner bar Friday and Saturday night staples and Girls Night Out go to shots.

Modern Classic Cosmo Goes Italian

Put an Italian twist into your relaxing weekend the Italian way with a little amaretto twist to the modern classic Cosmopolitan cocktail.  This version weighs a slightly different flavor to the taste experience than the usual Sex and the City cocktail fair hued pink drink.  This version gives away the hint of almond immediately in aroma with medium flavor throughout.  Who knows there might be a little Cosmo in all of us after all…

NUVO Sparkling Liqueur: New Height of Celebration

NUVO over the Top - created by Cheri Loughlin - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Perhaps you have seen the elegant French perfume bottle snuggled in among the premium liqueurs recently.  It is filled with an effervescent soft pink liquid and labeled NUVO “L’Esprit de Paris’.  Yes, now you know the one I mean.  This is the same stunning bottle that scarcely makes it to the back bar before ladies fawn over it having to have a cocktail with “IT” in it without an inkling as to what “IT” even is.  This is “THE” liqueur upscale cocktail lounges pour straight out of the bottle into a champagne glass over ice and call it a cocktail.  The real beauty for the bar is minimal labor at an optimal price per cocktail.  And that is before anyone knows what NUVO even is.

So what is this sheer pink liqueur?

NUVO is anything but fluff.  There is real taste in this unique bottle.  NUVO is a blend of premium triple distilled French vodka infused with French sparkling wine (predominately made of chardonnay with a hint of pinot noir) and natural fruit nectar, thus creating; NUVO French Sparkling Liqueur.  The feel is light and airy, not as carbonated as soda or bubbly as champagne, but just enough to twinkle on the taste buds.  Possibly lilting and fresh is more accurate.  Raspberry is the primary fruit flavor that flows through with likely hints of strawberry and peach.  It is not as robust as the raspberry flavor of Chambord, nor is this the intent of NUVO.  However, this is an excellent alternative for Chambord lovers who desire a festive, sensual feel.

Speaking of festive, NUVO’s cocktails take celebration to a new level.  The champagne flute is no longer saved for Dom Perignon or the Sunday brunch Bellini.  While NUVO’s cocktails are not over the top innovative, they are delightfully fun for any party atmosphere.

Effortless:  NUVO over ice in a champagne flute; breezy, uncomplicated and chic.

Trendy:  NUVO Sparkling Cosmo; a little bit of thrill in your chilled martini glass.

Sophisticated:  NUVO Black Code; an updated twist on the classic French 75

Sure, marketers know exactly who they are selling to with NUVO: women and those who are in a celebratory mood looking to stand out with something new, eye catching and cutting edge.   NUVO found its niche and rapped lightly at the door with a bit of the bubbly in hand.  This is a fun little liqueur created to complement the playful spirit within us all.

Agavero Inspires Cocktails beyond Shots & Margaritas

February 22 is National Margarita Day. Since many have a love it or hate it view toward tequila as the hangover spirit it’s time to move that misconception to the sideline and show a softer, smoother side to the rowdy character of the agave plant.Lovers Margarita Outdoors - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Agavero Tequila Liqueur is an exceptionally smooth, ultra-premium spirit created from a blend of 100% blue agave anejo and reposado tequilas. The essence of Damiana flower enriches the character adding substance to the flavor profile. Rather than an earthy bitterness or bite in the taste, Agavero is smooth and delicately rich on the palate. It is sweet, yet not syrupy. Agavero seems to be the perfect combination of tequila and agave nectar with the lilt of floral Damiana.

Agavero is produced at los Camichines Distillery in the Jalisco region of Mexico.  Only the finest 100% blue agave anejo and reposado tequilas are chosen to complement the essence of Damiana. These elements are combined and hand blended for the highest quality and taste.  Agavero Tequila Liqueur is bottled at 64 proof. It may be enjoyed neat, on the rocks or in a variety of cocktails that are only limited by your imagination.

The notion that tequila is somehow harsher than other liquors or possibly only good for shots or margaritas is clearly not the case. Agavero allows a wide variety of creative thought process to unfold while still allowing the richness of the agave plant to shine through without harshness.

1-1/4 measure Half & Half

Build in a double old-fashioned glass over ice. Stir. Variation: 1 measure each Agavero and Vanilla Liqueur, 3/4 measure Tequila, 1-1/4 measure Half & Half.

The deep rich vanilla blends flawlessly with the delicate nature of Agavero. The use of Half & Half cuts the sweetness while keeping this a decadent dessert cocktail. An Espresso Vodka would also intertwine nicely within this mix. Adjust the ratios and make it your own.

Fresh is best. Pineapple and tequila work amazingly well together. So does watermelon!

Lover’s Margarita – ala Agavero

1 measure Reposado Tequila

Splash Fresh Lime Juice

Salted Rim

Rim rocks glass with fresh lime and dip in salt if desired. Add fresh ice. Add Agavero and tequila. Stir. Double recipe and add two straws to share with a lover.

The Lover’s Margarita is simply unbeatable. Agavero adds dimension to the margarita that would not be there with one layering of tequila alone. It also rounds out the edges for a smooth finish.

This goes to show how adaptable Agavero Tequila is as a spirit. It is excellent as the foundation or companion piece in a wide range of mixed drinks. Tequila no longer needs to be considered the ruthless, untamed spirit designed for shots and margaritas alone.
