Rusty Nail

Labor Day closes out the summer season while gathering in family and friends. An excellent crowd pleaser is this two ingredient drink which is an easy favorite among scotch drinkers and cocktail enthusiasts riding the wave of Speakeasy couture. The version below tweaks the classic Rusty Nail recipe by dialing down the sweetness factor a notch so more scotch shines through in the flavor profile.Godfather 1 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Rusty Nail

1-1/2 ounce Blended Scotch Whisky

1/4 ounce Drambuie

Build in an old-fashioned glass over ice.  No garnish.

Please remember buzzed driving is impaired driving which is the equivalent to driving drunk.  Plan ahead by arranging for a cab or designated driver.

Reaping the Pyrat’s Bounty

As Hoti, patron saint of fortune tellers and bartenders, advises, “You don’t need a good reason to drink.  You just need a good drink.”

Pyrat Rum Pistol Tasting

Aroma: Comes across thin with notes of orange and vanilla.

Tasted Neat: Remains thin with slight burn. Definite orange flavor, but not as significant as Pyrat Rum XO Reserve.  Spice noted, possibly hints of cinnamon and clove, but mild rather than deep.  Just the right amount of sweetness to the spirit.  Not particularly my idea of sipping rum.  More of rum on the rocks with squeeze of orange and wee amount of lime possibly or could definitely see this going as a round of shots to start the night rolling.  Pyrat Rum Pistol mixes excellently for definition in cocktails.

Superior Pursuit

The name plays on Bacardi Superior and the Drambuie Pursuit.  There is substantial flavor packed into such a small glass.  Bacardi Superior lends its charm and strength to the heavy handed herbal notes of both Drambuie and B&B Liqueurs.  These rich spirits with equally deep roots in history add depth, flavor and meaning to this small sip cocktail.

Meant for leisure evenings by the fire or gathering with friends at the familiar haunt.  Superior Pursuit takes one back to the days of two ounce cocktails with million dollar flair.

70’s Cocktail Memories

The 70’s brings back memories of wood paneled station wagons, mood rings, platform shoes, discos, the Beatles, Star Wars, the Fonz and being a football fan, who could forget quarter back Joe Namath appearing in a Beautymist hosiery commercial wearing panty hose.  Since this is a liquor site however, I would be remiss if I excluded the cocktails of the 70’s.

Cocktails from the 70’s have played as big a part in memory as bellbottom pants and the leisure suit.  Visions of Harvey Wallbangers complete with the tall bottle of Galliano hitting the back bar and surf boards come to mind.  Or how about freshly grated nutmeg atop a frothy Brandy Alexander?  But really, I would be negligent to leave out the Tequila Sunrise, Pina Colada, Grasshopper, Pink Lady, Stinger, Manhattan, Rob Roy, Pink Squirrel, Martini, Bacardi Cocktail, Old Fashioned, Merry Widow, Rusty Nail, Daiquiri, Paradise Cocktail, Bronx, and Side Car.  Then again there were also Cuba Libres, Salty Dogs and Grey Hounds, Screwdrivers, Gin and Tonics, and Tom Collins.  Let’s not forget the Slow Comfortable Screw that had a most descriptive and unique twist in the 1991 Michael J. Fox movie, Doc Hollywood.  While these cocktails were around sometimes decades before the 70’s they were all quite popular in the 70’s.

Why do they come to mind at this moment?  Rhonda from California wrote in:

“Hey there!  You are a wealth of information!  I stumbled across your articles and I have a feeling I will be spending free moments…reading more.”

Rhonda goes on to tell me she is hosting a dinner party for her martini and margarita loving gourmet cooking club and wants to set the mood for a 70’s Cocktail Party theme.  She has already thought out a clever scheme of vintage cocktail glasses.  These have been collected for some time through yard and estate sales and thrift stores.  Ingenious!  People have been doing this mismatched place setting thing for ages with tea settings.  Why not try this with martini glasses?!  Stemware is gorgeous.  There is no rule that says it all has to match.  What an excellent way to keep everyone’s glasses distinctive without the need for stem markers and tags.

When planning a party the quick thought is always party punch.  Punch leaves a hostess free to mingle with guests.  However, Rhonda’s idea leans toward the presentational.  She wants cocktails; trendy yet a throw back to the 70’s.  This does not bring to mind party punch.  My suggestion for Rhonda is the same as I do at my own parties.  I plan four or five cocktails and print them on a menu for my guest to browse.  Before the party I prepare the cocktail ingredients without ice in pitchers and refrigerate.  I also prepare all garnishes ahead of time.  That way when my guests arrive and make their cocktail choices, I am not measuring from three or four individual bottles and ingredients.  I make one pour from a pitcher and then shake and strain.  Their cocktail is perfectly measured and complete within seconds rather than being a time consuming chore.  As the hostess, I am free to enjoy my time with guests and still make fabulous cocktails.  I do not have to choose between the two.  I never have a punch bowl with dipper filled with a fruity red sugary punch.  My guests are treated to genuine glassware with unique garnishes and shaken cocktails.  With a little leg work and preparation your next cocktail party will be a memorable event rather than just another party that seems like everyone else’s.

We cannot forget the recipes which is really what Rhonda wanted most.  A great cocktail stands tall or falls short with the recipe and the quality of ingredients you choose.  My article 21 Must Try Drinks covers recipes for the Bacardi Cocktail, Harvey Wallbanger, Manhattan, Martini, Old Fashioned, Rob Roy and Salty Dog.

Defizzing the Gansevoort

While flipping through a cocktail book a very special drink caught my eye; the Gansevoort Fizz.  While this isn’t the first cocktail with an unusual name to have caused me pause, it was the description that had me salivating for more. It seems this particular cocktail’s inspiration was a drink from the 1930’s; The Mackinnon.

The Mackinnon

Drambuie New Bottle Design - TOTC09 - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin2 ounces Drambuie

1/2 ounce Light Rum

1/2 ounce Lime Juice

1/2 ounce Lemon Juice

Club Soda

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend.  Strain into a Collins glass with only 2 or 3 ice cubes in it.  Top off with club soda.

Drambuie definitely showcased, but lacks in strength. Club soda overwhelms for flavor purposes, but satisfies on the thirst quenching side. Notation: What makes this cocktail interesting is the history behind the name…

Be it legend, lore or good old fashioned honest truth, Drambuie came to be passed down through the ages by the hands of a prince after a bloody rebellion was quashed. Prince Charles Edward Stuart fought to restore the exiled kings of England, Scotland and Ireland to their rightful thrones. The Highland clans fought alongside the prince. One hundred thirty miles from London, at Cullonden Moor, the rebellion was crushed. The prince escaped capture, but a price was placed upon his head. Captain John Mackinnon of Strathaird gave the prince Drambuie TOTC Tasting Room - Flavor Essence - photo copyright Cheri Loughlinrefuge, helping him to return safely to France. In gratitude the prince bestowed upon Captain Mackinnon the recipe to his most prized elixer.  Each bottle still honors the prince on its label with the words “REMEMBER THE GIFT OF THE PRINCE”

The contents of the bottle is more complex than the off the cuff description of heather and honey.  After all, a future king demanded particular things of the secret potion that nursed his soul.  Drambuie’s base liquor is scotch whisky that has been infused with heather honey.  There is also a hint of cloves believed to have analgesic properties in addition to releasing a spicy aroma. Saffron is included in the formula lending Drambuie its golden splendor.

Gansevoort Fizz – created by David Wondrich

2 ounces Medium Bodied Rum

1 ounce Drambuie

1 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

2 to 3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters

Club Soda

Combine all liquids (except club soda) in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend. Strain into chilled Collins glass without any ice. Top with 2 to 3 ounces of chilled club soda.

This version comes across with more strength than the Mackinnon, yet the club soda fizzies still diminish the flavor of the Drambuie. While the balance is there for what the drink was designed for, the fizz is taking too much shine off the bare bones of what I really wanted to taste; the smooth complexity of the Drambuie.

Sometimes one must dare to go bare.

Defizzing Gansevoort photo copyright Cheri LoughlinDefizzing Gansevoort

2 ounces Medium Bodied Rum

1 ounce Drambuie

1 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters

Lemon Twist Garnish

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with fresh lemon twist.

The Gansevoort Fizz balanced sweetness against fresh lemon with dark rum as its highlight, thus allowing the Drambuie to shine. It made sense to take away the fizz and allow the cocktail to stand tall. The drink retains modern classic flair while keeping the craft of bartending intact. The flavor is intense without the blur of bubbles. It flirts with the taste buds just enough to keep one interested in another sip.

Classic cocktails can stimulate creativity toward new paths. Pick up an old cocktail book and start browsing. Turn something old into something new again.

Thanksgiving Day Hot Coffee for Early Birds

Thanksgiving morning begins early for some; those who wake to prepare the meal for the day. For such early risers it seems only appropriate to me that the day should start out with a freshly brewed strong pot of coffee. There are simple pleasures in life and a strong coffee start to the day is merely one of them. Once the eyelids are lifted it is time to remember the day is for giving thanks, so have some fun with your morning coffee and celebrate the day.
