Wild Blackberry

Coconut water comes in quite handy for adding a bit of flavor, added volume and very little calories to the cocktail.  Fresh muddled blackberries give the Wild Blackberry regal and delicious flavor. These hips (..er boots) were made for walkin’ and the Wild Blackberry will keep the girlish figure one stride ahead of winter weight gain.

Fresh berries and sugar free syrups open the playing field up to lower calorie and lower carbohydrate drink recipe options. Muddling fruit just might burn a few extra calories with the little bit of elbow action, too!  Keep this whiskey cocktail lower calorie and delicious easily with minimal effort and fabulous results.Silhouette - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

5 Fresh Raspberries

1/2 measure Raspberry Sugar Free Syrup

1 measure Whiskey

1 measure Light Cranberry Juice

1/4 measure Fresh Lime Juice

Mint Leaves & Raspberry Garnish

Muddle raspberries and syrup in mixing glass. Add remaining ingredients with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into rocks glass over crushed ice. Garnish with bruised mint leaves and raspberry. Total approximate calories based upon 1 measure equals 1 ounce: 86 calories

Even though this has slight sugar free taste buried within, the fresh fruit flavor really kicks in and creates quite a tasty treat. Fabulous flavor as is, but since it sits at 86 calories it might be worth the extra 34.5 calories to bump up the whiskey a notch (1-1/2 measure rather than 1 measure), making the total calorie count 120.5.

The Easy Tease

One of my favorite diet juices makes the perfect mixer for many lower calorie drinks. Ocean Spray Diet Blueberry Pomegranate Juice is wonderful on its own with ice or mixed with a variety of flavored vodkas or rums. Wild Tea Vodka pairs quite nicely with the sharpness of black tea playing off the delicious blueberry. The end result is rather satisfying for leisurely sipping.

Wild About Tea

Absolut Wild Tea 2 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Tea and elderflower combination has been blended before in the Absolut Boston Cities edition release. This time it appears Absolut Wild Tea is here to stay. Since tea is such a popular thirst quencher for many people and mingles well with a variety of flavors, it makes perfect since as flavor infusion for base spirits. Flavorful refreshment is always one or two easy mixers away.

Aroma: First whiff brings essence of sweet black tea as it pours and lingers in the air. Secondary aroma at the glass renders gentle sweet tea. Not much elderflower if one is looking for the same powerful wallop found in St-Germain liqueur. This is like a subtle breeze on a beautiful day.

Taste: Heat. Light sweetness. Fine hint of black tea bitterness. More elderflower definition. Black tea much stronger and deeper than I recall in Absolut Boston.

Cranberry, raspberry and peach come to mind as mixers for this flavored vodka blend. The beauty of cranberry juice is the ability to use light or diet versions as mixers. This creates lower calorie drinks for those who prefer alternative happy hour options.

Light, refreshing, lower calorie drink for bikini season or anytime. Strong black tea flavor. Elderflower still carries through. Perfect poolside or for fun, worry free back yard entertaining.

Blueberry Bikini Season

Bikini season is just around the corner.  While fresh is best where cocktails are concerned, there are many flavorful alternatives stocked on grocery shelves for those who prefer low calorie consumption.  Ocean Spray’s Diet Blueberry flavor packs surprising luscious fruit flavor in the bottle without all the added
calories.  It pairs deliciously well with Pineapple Vodka for a long refreshing drink to keep the taste buds satisfied and the girlish figure in check.

Ditch the Diet Cocktail

The holiday season goes out with a big fat bang, while each New Year begins with magically shrunken clothing and swift proclamations of diet readiness.  Toss the diet thought process and go with thirst quenching drinks that tantalize the taste buds with nary a thought to low calorie.  Cran-Blurry Cooler gives versatility to the palate with daytime non-alcoholic spin that rocks on into the evening with your choice of vodka or rum splash.

Place ice in wine goblet or stemless cocktail glass. Add light cranberry juice to 2/3 full. Top with 1/3 part diet blueberry pomegranate juice. Add squeezed juice of quartered lime. Garnish with a few frozen cranberries. Sip to your heart’s desire.  Notation: Turn the Mocktail into a lower calorie cocktail by adding 1 ounce of vodka or rum. Go wild by making it blueberry, raspberry or citrus flavored vodka or rum! Fun!

Easy & Flavorful Lower Calorie Drinks for the Holidays

In honor of girlish figures, rows of light and diet fruit juices and an eye to keeping it simple the Raspberry Ringer drink recipe made its way to the cocktail glass one happy hour evening (and a few more since then I might add).  Delicious choices lining the cocktail bar do not always have to be filled with fresh lemon, lime, muddled fruit or layered with liqueurs and sparkling sodas to satiate the palate with fulfillment.  Sometimes all it requires is simplicity, a splash of flavor and additional display of charming garnish to capture the senses.  Instantly the cocktail glass has gone beyond simple non-descript lower calorie juice to spunky mixer for happy hour without the guilt.  Fashionable, flavorful, no muss.

For those who want a little bourbon cocktail without all the calories, the Apple Trace Teenie might be in order.  Light vanilla apple with Buffalo Trace Bourbon notes in the background.  The ‘sugar free’ flavor comes through a little too much for me with the gentleness of the apple, so skip the DaVinci Vanilla syrup if sweetness isn’t a necessary factor for you.  Enjoy the simple lilting of the apple tart instead.

When the house is filled with edible delectables and it seems there is nothing to mix with your favorite spirit, there is always something low-calorie cocktail friendly stored within the refrigerator or pantry. Coffee Mate and Cappuccino drinks make lovely on the spot mixers for on the fly deliciously satisfying cocktails.

1 ounce Bacardi Superior Rum

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a martini glass.  Garnish with one raspberry if desired.  Total calories: 144.5

The rum brings more notes of mocha and cappuccino out over the chocolate raspberry.  The drink is worthy of taking one’s time sipping for maximum pleasure.  If vodka is your preferred base spirit over rum, by all means switch it out in the drink recipe, but go for quality.  42Below Vodka or Stoli would be great choices since they both carry weight and character in the body.

Over on The Intoxicologist Facebook Fan page Barbara Winters recommended a cocktail based upon what days of the week one chooses to consume a cocktail:  ”Monday – Thursday” it is all about Absolut.  Barbara’s assessment of the cocktail, “Yummy! (hick-up!)” – Intoxicologist Notation: Barbara didn’t give a name for her cocktail creation or measurements, so I’ve taken the liberty at the good old fashioned American try at building and naming it. This is an excellent choice cocktail for relaxing at the end of the day.  It is light and fruity on taste without weighing one down on caloric intake.  Since it is a long drink it is also filling, leaving one with a fuller feeling after a single cocktail.

Ruby Weekdays - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinRuby Weekdays

1-1/4 parts Absolut Vodka

3 parts Light Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice

Splash of 7-Up (or Diet 7-Up)

Build ingredients in a highball glass over ice adding 7-Up last. Stir & serve.  If one were to use Diet 7-Up this cocktail would be lower in calorie overall.  The vodka weighs in at approximately 92 calories, grapefruit juice at 15 calories and Diet 7-Up at zero making Ruby Weekdays a 107 calorie cocktail – perfect for lower calorie weekday consumption.  Take this cocktail idea a step further by playing with your favorite Absolut flavor, light fruit juice and diet 7-Up or diet tonic water.

Keeping Holidays Low Calorie with Classic Cocktails

The holiday season typically means more festive occasions for tempting treats and delicious cocktails.  Each liquid delight that passes the lips means extra curve to the girlish hips.  All those holiday nips and sips add up by the time the New Year’s Eve ball drops.  Enjoy a few figure friendly classic cocktails during the holiday season and the word diet won’t ever reach your New Year’s Resolution list when January rolls around.

Most bars serve typical four ounce or more martinis.  Scale down the classic vodka or gin martini to two ounces for smaller portion. This serves as added bonus in keeping the cocktail chilled throughout the entire sip time and fewer calories in the glass.

Dry Vermouth

Lemon Twist

Place ice in a martini glass with 1/2 ounce dry vermouth.  Set aside.  Place Gin or Vodka in mixing glass with ice.  Stir or shake according to preference.  Swirl vermouth and ice in glass. Toss from martini glass. Strain vodka or gin into prepared chilled glass. Zest lemon twist garnish over glass and insert into martini. Notation: Keep in mind that dirtying a martini with olive juice and olives as garnish adds extra calories to the glass.

The Tonic is one of the easiest drinks of all to mix and complete with your spirit of choice. Most bars use tonic from a gun which is disappointing at best, since gun tonic comes across decidedly flat most often. A beautiful feature of purchasing diet tonic water for parties is there are a variety of flavored diet tonic waters now available on the market.

Perhaps one of the most widely recognized drinks by its generic name of Vodka & Cranberry, the Cape Cod or Cape Codder is easily converted into a lower calorie drink without sacrificing taste. While one could go with the diet version of cranberry juice, my recommendation is to stick with the light version and keep the extra couple of calories.  Those few calories really are worth the flavor since diet cranberry juice really does taste “diet.”

The Caipirinha is an easy drink to order out and keep low calorie if you plan ahead. Ask the bartender to make this drink with limes and Cachaca only, leaving out all sugar. Make sure you’ve tucked a sugar substitute packet (such as Truvia or Splenda) with you for on the go travel and stir it in the drink once it has been delivered front and center upon your bar napkin.

If tequila is your spirit of choice, skip the margarita and move onto something a little more glowing. Opt for the Tequila Sunrise with orange juice inclusion rather than triple sec. Tropicana makes Trop50 lower calorie orange juice and pomegranate blueberry.
