Review: Pucker Me Pleased

Pucker Vodka Tasting - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Flavored vodkas have become a dime a dozen on liquor store shelves. Some are creatively clever with wild infusions from bacon to tarragon and lavender. Standard flavors are relatively easy to interchange no matter which quality brand one chooses from the shelf. When one stares at the rows of flavored vodkas it is a little difficult to choose one brand of vanilla vodka from another. Usually the decision comes down to price point or picking up a tried and true favorite brand. However there are those flavors that stand out a little more than others due uniqueness in flavor.

The line of Pucker Vodkas clearly stands out with their faint sweetness and truly pucker worthy sweet tart flavors. Citrus is no longer just a hint of orange, lemon and lime rolled into one. Citrus Pucker brings “ooo la la” mouth watering excitement to the lips. It defies ordinary. Definitely designed with Girls Night Out in mind and times when flavorful fun happy hour supersedes old fashioned classics.

Citrus Pucker Vodka

Aroma: Dry powder orange / citrus with hint of sweetness.

Taste: Definite pucker worthy sour right from the start! Lemony / orange with bit of artificial feel. Sour to sweet combination is intriguing.

Can see this as a terrific flavored vodka mixing spirit. Great basis for lemon drop cocktails and shooters with nice appeal for various other fruity drinks on the agenda.

Sugar for Rim

Slide lemon around rim of chilled cocktail glass. Dip lemony rim in sugar. Set aside. Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into prepared cocktail glass. Garnish with lemon wheel.

Sour Apple Sass Pucker Vodka

Aroma: Makes the mouth water. Reminds me of apple flavored Jolly Ranchers and apple flavored Laffy Taffy. Smells like sweetly ripened granny smith apples.

Taste: Hint of sweetness. Terrific tart apple flavor. Just marvelous for mixing all sorts of apple cocktails. Caramel covered apple comes to mind right off the bat. Perfect for fun fruity apple shots, too.

Cherry Tease Pucker Vodka

Aroma: Not as tart as the other Pucker Vodkas. Bitter cherry with vanilla sweetness. Hint of lush coming through. Not quite “fresh” cherry aroma.

Taste: Smoother and less tart than the other Pucker Vodkas. Vanilla definitely blended into the flavor. Dark cherry, artificial in flavor.

Just WOW! Chocolate, cherry and vanilla combine exactly right. Though the spirit comes across a bit artificial in flavor when tasted neat, Cherry Tease Pucker Vodka clearly stands up to the test when mixed in cocktails.

Grape Gone Wild Pucker Vodka

Aroma: Laffy Taffy grape flavor is the automatic first impression. Sweetness, lush aroma. Not fresh grape, but the ideal sweetened grape candy feel.

Taste: Little more artificial with scant taste of perfume. Totally grape in flavor through and through.

Nice flavor. Surprising how well the flavors of grape and amaretto combine in this cocktail. Grape flavored vodka doesn’t necessarily have to mean candied fruit cocktails.

A special Girls Night Out evening recently brought women to the bar to sample the Pucker Vodka line. Sour Apple Sass Pucker Vodka proved to be a huge hit. Ideas for more cocktails and shots were created and sampled on the spot proving the terrific versatility of this particular spirit. Women commented on the pleasing bottle design with its fun factor and sleekness.

Moon River

Many Girls Night In evenings begin with popcorn, favorite movie and of course, cocktails. When it’s time to settle in for an indulgent evening full of movies, it’s time to bring out the classics. Many film stars from way back when have cocktails named in their honor, but there is also the flip side of movies with namesake cocktails. Audrey Hepburn made the movie sing, but remember the music from Breakfast at Tiffany’s?

Blue Balls Shot

It’s Girls Night Out and you and the ladies just want time to mix it up alone. Trouble is, there’s a small cluster of men at the bar who just won’t take no for an answer despite your polite refusals of no interaction. Send them a bold message loud and clear.

Remember When Cocktail

This impetuous sounding cocktail caught me off guard. Flaming Youth brings back memories of spontaneity and reckless abandon. Ah, the good ole days. The name alone makes this the perfect pairing cocktail for birthdays and Girl’s Night Out gatherings. It will possibly bring out the best ‘remember when’ stories.

2 ounces Gin

1 ounce Heavy Cream

1/2 ounce Honey

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously to blend and chill. Strain into chilled martini glass. Serve immediately. Lightly flavored gins work best for this particular recipe.

Flaming Youth is surprisingly light in sweetness and flavor, which will allow one to taste firsthand what all the buzz and hype are with the return of honey in cocktail recipes.  Flaming Youth comes across as innocent white froth with barely there notes of cinnamon spice in the background.  Very nice.

Stalking the Huntress

Girl’s Night Out will never be the same for bourbon lovers seeking lighthearted, flavorful cocktails for a night out with friends. Huntress is an exquisite desert or anytime cocktail. Heering Cherry Liqueur is a must for this drink as well as bourbon that contains round vanilla notes rather than stripped wood tones. Skip the Triple Sec all together as it becomes rather unnecessary and lost in this delightful sipper.

Bourbon and cherry liqueur meld together like a symphony in the Huntress. Just divine! Not too sweet, not too rich, but decadently playful. Exactly perfect!

Surviving Girl’s Night Out

The perfect Girl’s Night Out.  What does it begin and end with?  Glitz and glamour from head to toe.  Friends.  Good food.  Wining and dining, with dancing till dawn.  A fabulous pair of shoes that make men and women do a double dare double take.  And footloose, fancy free cocktails with a feel for theX-Rated Survival Kit Goodies - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin sexy, sensual and flirtatious.  Girl’s Night Out is all about finesse, fun and free living with a wee bit of sass stowed in for extra measure.

A simple brown box arrived in the mail the other day.  As I cut through the mandatory layers of impossible to tear through tape and dug through mounds of crunchy white packing peanuts a pink tissue wrapped box emerged.  My smile widened.  Pink always comes through with playfully pleasurable treasures.  And there it was – the big X-Rated.  That’s when I knew for certain my hands lay upon the loveliest box of toys.

The X-Rated Girl’s Night Out Survival Kit contains everything a woman could want for planning a fabulous fun filled night out of cocktail glamour, sophisticated style and girl chat galore.  X-Rated Fusion gets the party started with cocktail recipe card, X-Rated Fusion Liqueur and a few pocket sized trinkets for the ladies.  And doesn’t this just sound divine: “This hot pink liqueur is a sensuous blend of ultra premium French vodka, infused with blood oranges, passion fruit and mango.” Kind of gets one steamy in all the right places just thinking about the playful concoctions to be made with this tantalizing potion.

2 ounces Pineapple Juice

Splash Grenadine

Cherry & Orange Twist Garnish

Combine all liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into chilled cocktail glass.  Garnish with cherry and orange twist.

Aroma is nice, summery and heavily lush.  To be perfectly honest while mixing the Vintage Tini thoughts of sugar coma were already forming in my head.  The aroma is not only sweet, but nearly syrupy.  The first taste confirmed this thought.  Vintage Tini is a definite sipper rather than gulper.  However, dial back the pineapple juice a fraction to cut back on sweet and allow the wonderful flavor of Myers’s Rum some play time alongside the X-Rated Fusion Liqueur.  Perhaps cut the X-Rated to 1-3/4 ounce as well and see if this magical sip lights up your Girl’s Night out.

Combine X-Rated Fusion Liqueur, SKYY Infusions Pineapple and cranberry in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into chilled champagne flute.  Top with two ounces brut champagne.

Still leans toward the sweeter side of cocktail fancy, but this is to be expected when mango and passion fruit mingle for spirited play in an X-Rated Fusion Liqueur.  Topped with tiny bubbles this cocktail aims to satisfy as ladies raise glasses in toast to a night of freedom, flamboyance and finesse. X-Rated Survival Kit - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Celebrating Single

Move over couples. Singles have their day. It’s Singles Awareness Day; S.A.D. This singles only holiday is the alternative celebration to the ‘most romantic couples only’ holiday; Valentine’s Day. Some choose to observe Singles Awareness (or Appreciation) Day on Valentine’s Day, but the day after sounds like the perfect time for a Girl’s Night Out on the town to me. Cheers!

Fun & Flirty Cocktail Recipes

Be still my heart…

There are movies, men and moments in life that make a woman weak in the knees, but as the saying goes; “there’s nothing quicker, than liquor.”  All kidding aside words of romance strike whimsical fancy in some people’s book while strumming a chord of cheesy Hallmark moment in another.  Allow the world of fanciful daydream filled with starry nights and fluttering eyelashes collide.

Whether your chosen moment is Valentine’s Day, Girl’s Night Out, Bachelorette Party or Couple’s Night In, enjoy the moment with a few cocktails that capture moments of love and romance in a fun, flirty sort of style.

Cherry Samba

What often interests me is what is being stirred, shaken and whipped up in kitchens across the United States. When best friends get together for girls night out, what are they mixing up with the bottle they purchased at the liquor store?

Cherry Samba – ala Julianna Cain

Cherry Samba - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin1 measure Cherry Brandy

1 measure Cachaca

1 measure Lemon Juice

1 Egg White

1 measure White Cranberry

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously until egg is nice and frothy. Strain into a champagne flute.

The ingredients Julianna mentioned intrigued me, so I wanted to try this drink recipe right away.  However, traditional cranberry juice is all I had stocked at the time. White cranberry juice is a little sweeter. That being said before my tasting notation; Cherry Samba tastes great with a hint of bitter edge to it. It does not veer too far to the sweet side like so many cocktails on bar martini listings today. As Julianna aptly recognizes in her area of the country, many consumers are a little put off by raw egg white in cocktails, but it adds such nice froth to the drink. The egg white is unrecognizable in the flavor of the drink.  If you make this cocktail for friends, they will never realize it is in there.

Cheri Samba – adapted by Cheri Loughlin

Cheri Samba - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin3/4 measure Cherry Brandy

1 measure Cachaca

3/4 measure Cranberry Juice

1/4 measure Fresh Lemon Juice

1 Egg White

Maraschino Cherry Garnish

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously until egg white is frothy. Strain into a champagne flute. Garnish with speared maraschino cherry.

Since many like a little sweetness added to the cocktail the Cheri Samba tweaks the original version Julianna sent out and adds a little variety with hint of sweetness. The Cachaca comes through slightly more with a hint of sweet softness since the fresh lemon juice is dialed back in this version. Maraschino cherry garnish is definitely not needed for taste, but adds a nice finishing touch.

I would love to know what you mix up at home for your Girls Night Out, Poker Night or what your specialty drink happens to be.  Consumers of the United States are picking up bottles of spirits off the shelf of liquor stores and consuming them neat, on the rocks, in long drinks and cocktails.  Email me… what cocktail have you created?
