Ponce de Leon Cocktail

Ponce de Leon could definitely be described as vintage, classic or totally retro, but the cocktail is far from it. The man sailed rough seas with Christopher Columbus in search of a new world.  The cocktail brings sipping satisfaction in the dawning of a new age. The goal is balance of flavor.  Ponce de Leon delivers. Though there are a few variations on this cocktail, this one tempts the palate with its multi-layering of light and dark spirits.

1/2 measure Rum

1/2 measure Premium Orange Liqueur

1/2 measure Grapefruit Juice

1 measure Brut Champagne

Combine cognac, rum liqueur and juice in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into champagne saucer or cocktail glass. Top with champagne. Stir gently. Lovely round, lush sweetness without being overly sugary.  Faint hint of grapefruit bitter in the finality, bringing the flavors together in perfect harmony.  That is before the champagne topper!  Champagne adds more sweetness and thins the cocktail out a little more.

Prohibition Era Spirit: Aperol

Aperol, introduced in Padua, Italy in 1919, set modern day standards ahead of its time by creating a spirit with a lower alcohol content of just 11%.  The trendy and easily adaptable Aperol inspired an aperitif that went on to become the signature drink of Italy; the Aperol Spritz.  Even today, the Aperol Spritz continues to thrive as a classic.  In a cocktail world spinning with new infusions and creations released on the market every day, a classic which has stood the test of time like Aperol should not be overlooked.

Aperol is a dark orange Italian aperitif with a sweet orange flavor.  It is made from a blend of base spirit, rhubarb, chinchona, genziana and of course the best kept secret of combination herbs.  While the Aperol Spritz is the clear-cut traditional Aperol cocktail to experiment with, there are of course many recipe creations to please the palate.  Hendrick’s Gin fashioned the Unusual Negroni using Aperol rather than Campari giving the classic a unique spin.  Various modern day mixologists have taken this pre-prohibition spirit in many flavorful directions for palate pleasing cocktails sure to delight the senses.  Celebrate Prohibition Repeal Day, Saturday, December 5, with an authentic prohibition era spirit; Aperol.

Delicious Dark Day for the Paloma

When tequila finds its way outside the Margarita and shot glass and the rich flavor of coffee flows from a bottle rather than filters through a coffee pot, cocktails just might be just on the horizon.  Kahlua fuses the flavors of Mexico’s Veracruz Sugar Cane Rum and Jalisco Agave Tequila with fresh squeezed juices.  A few shakes of the wrist and a mysterious flavorful coffee liqueur twist on a classic is born…just in time for National Kahlua Day, February 27.

Black Paloma – created by Rick Stutz

1-1/2 ounce Olmeca Altos Plata Tequila

1-1/2 ounce Kahlua

3/4 ounce Lime

1/2 ounce Fresh Grapefruit Juice

2 dashes Bitters

Pinch Salt

Club Soda

Combine liquid ingredients except club soda in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to chill. Strain into Collins glass over fresh ice. Top with club soda and pinch of salt.

Interesting to note: Kahlua Liqueur’s base spirit is made from Sugarcane Rum from Veracruz.  Though this rum by itself would not be my first choice for premium sipping, it is ideal for creating coffee flavored liqueur.  The spirit is thinner than expected considering the viscosity of Kahlua, but the coffee and mocha notes definitely noticeable in the forefront of initial taste.

Whiskey Quotes & Cocktails

Whiskey spans the globe in a broad range of styles, flavors and varieties. No matter where the bottle pours it seems the preferred manner of consuming the spirit is neat or on the rocks. However the vast flavor profile of each individual whiskey creates a wealth of opportunity for cocktail sampling and springboard for new creations.
