Bacardi Cocktail

The Bacardi Cocktail isn’t reserved for women only. This isn’t a girly drink men should dismiss due to the color. The color is beautiful by the way. Just look at it!

The Bacardi Cocktail is more about the flavor of Bacardi Superior Rum than about the radiant Breast Cancer Awareness pink coloring. The flavor is deep, revealing the nature of the base spirit hidden behind the lovely hue. This time honored classic cocktail is an easy three ingredient drink that baffles bartenders with its simplicity to the point they screw it up more often than not. In my opinion bartenders fumble the ball with the Bacardi Cocktail when they try to free pour it without being familiar enough with the recipe.

Cocktail Tips, Tricks & Notes

Does it really matter what kind of cherry garnish goes in the drink? Oh, yes it does!

Luxardo Maraschino Cherries, $20 - photo by Cheri Loughlin, The Intoxicologist

Luxardo Maraschino Cherries, $20 – photo by Cheri Loughlin, The Intoxicologist

A while back I picked up a jar of Luxardo Maraschino Cherries at Williams-Sonoma for around $20. I tweeted a photo of the jar and asked if people thought they would be worth it. Opinions were mixed. I’m raising my hand and waving to say without a question of a doubt that I’m totally loving these little Marasca cherries and will be purchasing a back up jar soon.

I garnished the Bacardi Cocktail with a Luxardo Maraschino Cherry. The syrup around the cherries is rather thick, so it helps to spear the cherry and swirl it around in the cocktail for a few seconds to incorporate it into the drink before sipping. In this case the garnish really does add flavor to the drink. The Luxardo Maraschino Cherry adds a bit of smooth character to the Bacardi Cocktail.

Of course I’m a comparison shopper or in this case, comparison taster! I placed an ordinary maraschino cherry (one you’d find in the liquor store or even on the ice cream toppings aisle of the grocery store) in the well of the cocktail glass. What a difference a cherry can make! I almost thought there was residual gin in my cocktail shaker, but I hadn’t been using any gin. The taste was medicine-like, tinny. That’s just my cherry covered thoughts, so use whichever cherry garnish you prefer or have on hand. Enjoy!

Girls Night Out Cocktail: Harvest Moon

Many fine Italian wines for sale.

Girls Night Out sometimes comes with a few misconceptions. It isn’t necessarily a gab fest of complaints about significant others, how the office queen is trying to ruin our next step up the ladder of success or how little Tommy just graduated from tricycle to training wheels. Often it’s about breathing a much needed sigh of relief, not worrying about anyone else and countless laughs for a few hours. And if we look good in a smokin’ hot dress and high heel shoes while having a good time, all the better.

Ditch the Cosmo, howl at the moon! Enjoy Girls Night Out, Ladies!

Girls Night Out is also synonymous with wine tasting evenings in. Wine Chateau has a large selection of wines, including fine Italian wines, currently priced to fit every budget.

3 Sea Breeze Drink Recipe Variations

Many of us have come to know the Sea Breeze drink as one of the more popular drinks of the 70’s. But did you know the Sea Breeze was really a Prohibition Era recipe born in the late 1920s? This makes the Sea Breeze a drink to add to your growing list of classic cocktails.

Ocean Breeze - Low Calorie Cocktail variation of the New England Highball Sea Breeze Drink Recipe - contains Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka, Grapefruit Juice, Cranberry Juice

Sea Breeze Cooler & Galliano Breeze

The 1920s version of the Sea Breeze contained gin and grenadine. By the 1930s it became the Sea Breeze Cooler with gin, apricot brandy, grenadine, lemon juice and mint sprig garnish. I’ve seen internet chatter of a later version of the Sea Breeze using Galliano and Blue Curacao, but I’ve been unable to find an exact recipe. However, I did find a Galliano Breeze on Italian Food that you might find interesting.

We know how to make the modern day version of the Sea Breeze, so let’s talk about how to convert it for low calorie consumption.

Low Calorie Ocean Breeze

The Sea Breeze drink is a simple three ingredient cocktail. This makes flavor substitution a breeze for low calorie drink recipes. Take advantage of superbly crafted vodka flavor infusions for quick, low calorie cocktails. Rely on fresh squeezed fruit juice and low calorie bottled fruit juices.

Ocean Breeze - Low Calorie Cocktail variation of the New England Highball Sea Breeze Drink Recipe - contains Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka, Grapefruit Juice, Cranberry Juice

Ocean Breeze – created by Cheri Loughlin

1 ounce Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka

3 ounces Light Cranberry Juice

1/2 ounce Fresh Grapefruit Juice

Grapefruit Wedge Garnish – optional

Combine liquids in highball glass over fresh ice. Garnish with small grapefruit wedge if desired. – Approximately 88 calories (I used Charbay Vodka while creating this cocktail, but use the brand you like the best.) Find calorie counts for some spirits and mixers in the Counting Calories chart found on this site.

The Sea Breeze drink recipe is a member of the New England Highball family of recipes. It enjoys company with the Cape Cod or Cape Codder, Bay Breeze, Madras, Sex on the Beach, Woo Woo and a few other off-shoot drink recipes. These drinks are ideally shaken over ice to create a foamy surface on the top of the drink before serve. Perhaps this is a reminder of the surface of the sea.

Jello Shots Become Bite-Sized Desserts

Mexican Truffle Gelatin Jello Shot 016

Jello shots have been around since 1955 so the story goes. They are the go-to college party shot, Halloween candy shot and (admit it) mom’s little secret treat hiding in the back of the fridge for book club night. Just as classic cocktails and mixology have evolved through the years, Jello shots have gone from amateur night throw back shot to sophisticated connoisseur finger food. Forget the plastic cup. Bring on the tiny appetizer plates. Seriously, in the long, short and wiggly of it all, it’s still alcohol wrapped up in gelatin. Slam it, sip it or nosh it. Any way you bite it there’s alcohol content, so user beware. This isn’t kiddie candy, but Jello shots are still loaded with fun!

These Mexican Truffles are little bite-sized packages of dark chocolate goodness. So good, they are difficult to put down. The whipped cream and cinnamon garnish balance out the tasty morsel with creamy smoothness. Instead of the usual Jello shots that come to mind, these decadent small bite desserts are ideal for cocktail parties, hosting a girls night out game night or wrapping up your own Valentine’s Day box of chocolates.

Mexican Truffle Gelatin Jello Shot 017

Mexican Truffle – created by Cheri Loughlin

1/3 cup Chocolate Milk

1 teaspoon Grenadine

2 Knox Unflavored Gelatin Packets

1/3 cup Reposado Tequila

1/3 cup Hazelnut Liqueur

2 tablespoons Coffee Liqueur

Whipped Cream & Cinnamon Sprinkle Garnish

Place milk, grenadine and gelatin in saucepan. Stir gently. Heat over low heat until gelatin is completely dissolved (approximately 7 to 8 minutes). Remove from heat. Add tequila and liqueurs. Stir. Pour into small shallow glass dish. Chill until gelatin is completely set. Cut into approximately 20 to 24 squares or use simple cookie cutter for decorative shapes just before serving. Garnish with dollop of whipped cream and dust with cinnamon powder just before serving.

If you love playing with your food and drink then you’ll love the Jelly Shot Test Kitchen. They have a terrific book with more gelatin style Jello cocktail shot recipes. The Cucumber-Lime Margarita sounds delicious! Check out a few cute gelatin shot ideas on my Pinterest board. There are some amazingly creative people out there!

The Original Moonshine Cocktails

Moonshine Clear Corn Whiskey 063 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

The Original MOONSHINE, or ‘Shine as it is fondly referred to by those who sip and savor the spirit from traditional style mason jars, is clear corn whiskey crafted in the same “authentic tradition that moonshine has been made for hundreds of years.” They mean hand crafted from 100% estate grown corn, distilled four times in a Prohibition era copper pot still. All legal I’s dotted and T’s crossed.

I haven’t seen this product on local shelves, but have seen it available at several online retail venues in the $30 to $40 range. It comes in at 80 proof / 40% abv. Moonshine recommends enjoying ‘Shine neat, on the rocks or in specialty cocktails designed to feature the sweet summer corn flavor of this white whiskey.

Lime Twist Garnish

Shake Moonshine in shaker with ice to bruise it up a bit. Strain into rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with lime twist.

Tullamore D.E.W. Original: Irish True

Tullamore DEW Original 006 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

This year Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey celebrates an “Irish True” year with the opening of the new Tullamore D.E.W. Visitor Centre in Tullamore, Ireland. The new Tullamore D.E.W. packaging highlights the brand’s history, founder and namesake, Daniel E. Williams, with the initials, D.E.W., placed prominently on the bottle.

Tullamore DEW 010 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Daniel was a distillery worker who had a vision and stayed true to that vision. He became the general manager and brought modern conveniences and technology of the day to the distillery so he could make his whiskey his way. The Irish True way.

Tullamore DEW Original 008 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Tullamore D.E.W is a unique blend of three types of Irish whiskey; pot still, malt and grain whiskey. It was the first and remains the only international Irish whiskey to pioneer this unique blend of three. The malted and unmalted barley used in the whiskey is dried in enclosed kilns, rather than over peat fires. This creates a smooth, yet complex taste rather than one of peated smokiness.

The original Tullamore D.E.W. blend is recognized for its smooth, gentle flavor. It has also won numerous awards including the much-prized trophy at the International Spirits Challenge, the highest accolade in the drinks industry.

4 Champagne & Orange Juice Cocktails

A Buck’s Fizz by any other name is what most Americans know as a Mimosa. This Sunday brunch staple may well be the most commonly known Champagne cocktail. The Buck’s Fizz or Mimosa is a simply elegant cocktail which turns an ordinary breakfast into an invitation for leisurely conversation.

The Buck’s Fizz originated in 1921 with barman, Pat McGarry, the first bartender of the famous Buck’s Club in London. McGarry is also the recognized creator of the original Sidecar cocktail. Captain H. J. Buckmaster established the Buck’s Club in 1919. He wanted an American Cocktail Bar rather than the stuffy traditional gentlemen’s clubs in existence at the time. He must have hit upon something, because the Buck’s Club made its way into contemporary fiction writing and has hit Hollywood’s big screen.

With only two ingredients, Champagne and orange juice, the Buck’s Fizz is an easy preparation. A Buck’s Fizz is heavier on orange juice than the Mimosa version that followed a few short years later, making its appearance at the Ritz Hotel in Paris in 1925. Both are very similar, the difference being only in the ratios of Champagne to orange juice. If Champagne is not available or desired, sparkling wine or Prosecco may be used. Fresh orange juice is always a plus, but is not absolutely necessary to make either of these cocktails a winning combination.
