Mexican Holiday

Mexican Holiday utilizes the flavors of fall with cranberry, orange and spices usually reserved for delicious baked goods. The use of flavorful, easily prepared syrups keeps cocktails freshly flavored and interesting. Mexican Holiday is wonderful for fall, but transitions easily to summertime sipping with lemon wheel garnish and use of Camarena Silver Tequila instead.

Review: DonQ Pasion Rum

DonQ Passion Rum 034 - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Puerto Rican Rum with Natural Passionfruit Flavors

60 Proof / 30% alcohol

Suggested Retail Price: $12 to $15 range

Availability: United States offices opened in June 2009 with the purpose of increasing availability to all fifty states. DonQ Pasion Rum has limited availability in US at this time.

Tasting Notes

Color: Mostly clear with just barely there tinge of ecru w/ very light peach. Not perfectly clear.

Aroma: Detect a bit of alcohol on the nose, but no burn. Passionfruit inclusion is barely there if at all. Fruit is extremely faint.

Tasted Neat: Light sweetness. Toasted type sweetness. Burn. Passionfruit is again very light. I do like the unusual sweetness with its mix of burnt sugar, roasted fruit feel. More fruit comes through in third to fourth sip. Not liking the after taste neat, but this is not a flavor that is meant to be sipped neat. It’s meant to be paired with favorite mixers.

Mouth Feel: Upper end of light.

Possible Uses, Pairings and / or Cocktails: Variation on classic Cosmo comes to mind first, using  Passionfruit Rum version. Might also go well with orange juice with squeeze of lemon. Possibly Sprite topper.

Bitter End

Light pineapple with ever so slight dryness. Excellent as a single on the rocks drink or doubles as a party punch. Versatile drink works well for summer due to the fruit inclusion as well as fall to winter due to the light, yet dry spice Campari brings to the drink. Suitable for celebrations.

Kentucky Sparkler

The Ginza with its use of ordinary sake inspired the Kentucky Sparkler. This cocktail reduces the ratio of bourbon due to Baker’s higher proof, but fully utilizes its flavor. This version also takes full advantage Zipang Sparkling Sake turning this drink into a celebration style cocktail when the need arises. Addition of bitters adds depth of character and a hint of spicy flair.

1/4 measure Simple Syrup

1/4 measure Lemon Juice

3 drops Orange Bitters

1-1/2 measure Zipang Sparkling Sake

Lemon Twist Garnish

Combine all liquids except sparkling sake in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Top with sparkling sake. Garnish with lemon twist.

My preferred way of enjoying Baker’s is with a single cube left to melt idly in the glass while the bourbon warms to room temperature again.  Savoring the full warmth of this one increases the enjoyment in my opinion.  The texture remains smooth as silk, full and rich, warm and supple. Baker’s Bourbon displays wonderful notes of vanilla and caramel.
