NUVO Sparkling Liqueur: New Height of Celebration

NUVO over the Top - created by Cheri Loughlin - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Perhaps you have seen the elegant French perfume bottle snuggled in among the premium liqueurs recently.  It is filled with an effervescent soft pink liquid and labeled NUVO “L’Esprit de Paris’.  Yes, now you know the one I mean.  This is the same stunning bottle that scarcely makes it to the back bar before ladies fawn over it having to have a cocktail with “IT” in it without an inkling as to what “IT” even is.  This is “THE” liqueur upscale cocktail lounges pour straight out of the bottle into a champagne glass over ice and call it a cocktail.  The real beauty for the bar is minimal labor at an optimal price per cocktail.  And that is before anyone knows what NUVO even is.

So what is this sheer pink liqueur?

NUVO is anything but fluff.  There is real taste in this unique bottle.  NUVO is a blend of premium triple distilled French vodka infused with French sparkling wine (predominately made of chardonnay with a hint of pinot noir) and natural fruit nectar, thus creating; NUVO French Sparkling Liqueur.  The feel is light and airy, not as carbonated as soda or bubbly as champagne, but just enough to twinkle on the taste buds.  Possibly lilting and fresh is more accurate.  Raspberry is the primary fruit flavor that flows through with likely hints of strawberry and peach.  It is not as robust as the raspberry flavor of Chambord, nor is this the intent of NUVO.  However, this is an excellent alternative for Chambord lovers who desire a festive, sensual feel.

Speaking of festive, NUVO’s cocktails take celebration to a new level.  The champagne flute is no longer saved for Dom Perignon or the Sunday brunch Bellini.  While NUVO’s cocktails are not over the top innovative, they are delightfully fun for any party atmosphere.

Effortless:  NUVO over ice in a champagne flute; breezy, uncomplicated and chic.

Trendy:  NUVO Sparkling Cosmo; a little bit of thrill in your chilled martini glass.

Sophisticated:  NUVO Black Code; an updated twist on the classic French 75

Sure, marketers know exactly who they are selling to with NUVO: women and those who are in a celebratory mood looking to stand out with something new, eye catching and cutting edge.   NUVO found its niche and rapped lightly at the door with a bit of the bubbly in hand.  This is a fun little liqueur created to complement the playful spirit within us all.

NUVO Lost its Sparkle? Bring the Twinkle Back

NUVO Sparkling Liqueur.  You partied with it the night before or maybe the week before with its beautiful bubbly effervescent glow.  The lilting tingles tickled your fancy to the wee hours of the morning.  You thought there could never possibly be an end to NUVO’s glory until…this delightful little joy went flat while you caught a few winks of shut eye.  While you rejuvenate, NUVO flattens.  What to do?  Why waste good NUVO?  There must be something.  Right?!

Sparkling NUVO Gone Flat Tasting - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

The first thought might be to just top NUVO off with a bit of the bubbly for renewed freshness.  If that floats your boat, fine.  But this only waters NUVO down.  Begin building NUVO’s flavor profile back up with the basics: Gin, Rum, Vodka, and Tequila.

NUVO & Rangpur – created by Cheri Loughlin

1 ounce flat NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

1/4 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

1/4 ounce Raspberry Liqueur

1-1/2 ounce Diet Tonic Water

Combine all liquids (except tonic water) in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to chill. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Top off with diet tonic water.

This is similar to a Gin & Tonic with an updated, straight-up twist.  NUVO lovers get their fizz back with the addition of the tonic water while keeping the pretty pink hue and flavor of the raspberry blossom.  The Rangpur Gin creates a fabulous base for gin fans and those who are just discovering this lovely spirit.  The Rangpur lime zing adds just enough splash to give NUVO & Rangpur the vitality it needs.

Italian Tropics – created by Cheri Loughlin

1/2 ounce Tuaca

2 ounces Pineapple Orange Juice

1 ounce flat NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

Pineapple Chunks for Garnish

Build over ice in a tall decorative glass. Garnish with skewered pineapple chunks.

Although this cocktail was meant to highlight or at the bare minimum incorporate the flavor of NUVO Sparkling Liqueur, instead it masks it to such a degree not a smidge of NUVO can be detected with its full one ounce addition to the drink.  However, the Italian Tropics is buttery-scotch delicious!  Conclusion:  Save the flat NUVO for a rainy day, but keep this cocktail for a sunny day on the deck or beach.

1 ounce flat NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

2 ounces Acai Juice with Raspberry

1/2 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

1/4 ounce Simple Syrup

Lemon Twist Garnish

The Nuevo NUVO renews the NUVO flavor to fabulous rich raspberry goodness.  Of course the enhancement is due to the Bossa Nova addition, but this brings out a hint of NUVO in the background of the cocktail.  That little hint maybe just what one needs to stir memories of the good times shared previously with NUVO friends.

To bring the bubbly back to the Nuevo NUVO try these options:

1-1/2 ounce club soda adds the right amount of bubbly effervescence without watering the cocktail down or contributing more alcohol.

1-1/2 ounce brut champagne will add more alcohol, but also more bubbles and cut a tad of the sweet while bringing its own grapevine twist to the cocktail.

1-1/2 ounce sparkling sake brings tingles to the cocktail with light zing that is distinctly dry yet satisfying without adding more sweetness.

NUVO Margarita – created by Cheri Loughlin

NUVO Margarita – NUVO Sparkling Liqueur cocktail created by Cheri Loughlin - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin2 ounces Tequila

1 ounce flat NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

3/4 ounce Homemade Sour

Lime Wheel for Garnish

Salted for glass rim optional

Salt rim of margarita or highball glass. Add liquids to cocktail shaker. Shake to blend. Strain into prepared glass over fresh ice. Garnish with lime wheel.

This is quite strong on tequila flavor with only a hint of NUVO.  Definitely not a drink for anyone who turns a nose up at tasting alcohol in their cocktail.  Adding lime and fruit juice to this mixture began mucking up the flavor drastically.  My reasoning behind this particular cocktail however happened to be the “manly” angle.  NUVO’s color is pink; not so masculine, yet consumed by many men if you happen to take a peek at NUVO Facebook photos.  As a female I often care for something a little edgier than the frill of pink in a cocktail.  Why not give NUVO consumers the best of both worlds; flavor packed NUVO.

Conclusion:Flat NUVO loses its flavor considerably.  Part of the thrill and bounce is in the tiny bubbles springing to the top of the glass.  Without the bubble all that remains is one dimensional pink liquid without much taste for the tongue to enjoy.  NUVO is available in a wide range of sizes to fit your personal to party needs.  Find the size that suits your mood and enjoy.

Making Springtime Sparkle

Springtime calls for lilting cocktails with fruited flavors of the season that tickle at the nose and linger on the taste buds. The Springtime Martini pegs the name right on, but comes across with wisps of perfume in the finish. While fresh juice usually wins out for better cocktails, this one would perhaps taste better with Peach Liqueur in place of the peach nectar.

Springtime Martini - NUVO Sparkling Liqueur cocktail - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinSpringtime Martini

2 ounces Vodka

1/2 ounce Peach Nectar

1/4 ounce Fresh Lime Juice

1 ounce NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

Place vodka and juices in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into chilled martini glass. Top with chilled NUVO Sparkling Liqueur.

NUVO Sparkling Liqueur is vodka infused with French sparkling wine, raspberry, peach and strawberry fruits. The wine is predominantly chardonnay with a touch of pinot noir. NUVO is best served chilled. Since it is sparkling liqueur, it will go flat if not consumed within 18 to 24 hours. Best if consumed within shorter time frame.

More Amore Please

Talk about beautiful simple layers in a cocktail glass. And trouble-free! Hazelnut adds nutty chocolate flavor to this blend which many care for in a BIG way. In my opinion it is a little out of place. It lacks something. Perhaps there is not enough depth between the layers to carry off the intensity of the Hazelnut Liqueur and delicacy of the NUVO. Possibly a hint or drizzle of Raspberry Liqueur around the outer edge of the wine glass just before serving would boost the flavor intensity to just the right level it needs to carry off the richness of the Hazelnut Liqueur.

The Midnight Kiss

Who wouldn’t want a kiss at the stroke of midnight? With this little number The Midnight Kiss is available long before the clock strikes the magic number.

The Midnight Kiss

The Midnight Kiss - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin1 ounce Prosecco

3 ounces NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

2 each Raspberries and Blackberries

Gently muddle raspberries and blackberries in mixing glass. Add prosecco and stir. Pour into champagne flute. Top with NUVO Sparkling Liqueur.

The flavor of The Midnight Kiss is exceptional. However the first swallow is all fruit pulp; hardly lovely for a cocktail in my opinion. Aesthetically this is beautiful to look at as is the case with a Mojito for instance. But muddled drinks jam drinking straws and become continuous mouthfuls of food rather than sipping drinks. Perhaps strain the berries and prosecco into the champagne flute. Love the essence of The Midnight Kiss, but not the fruited floater experience.

Creative Sparkle of NUVO Cocktails

Sipping some spirits straight is fine for a while, but even that can become boring. NUVO Sparkling Liqueur ignites the adventurous spirit within a few creative souls. The pink liqueur often associated with baby showers, bridal parties and Girl’s Night Out can also be a bit daring and innovative.

Serve the NUVO Egg Cream with a small dish of berries and this makes one heck of a dessert pairing.

NUVO Egg Cream – created by Tara Wright

1 ounce Frangelico

1 ounce Heavy Cream

2 ounces NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

Strawberry Garnish

Fill a large wine glass with ice.  Add Frangelico and heavy cream.  Fill the glass with chilled NUVO and stir.  Garnish with a strawberry.

Another variation on the classic Cosmo and existing NUVO Sparkling Cosmos, this updated version gears more toward tradition with orange liqueur and lime juice. This is already sweet enough, so don’t substitute Rose’s Lime Juice. Fresh lime adds a dimension that you can only get by adding fresh ingredients.

NUVO Sparkling Cosmo – Updated

2 ounces NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

1/2 ounce Grand Marnier

1/2 to 3/4 ounce Fresh Lime Juice

Lime Slice Garnish

Place Grand Marnier and juice in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to chill. Strain into chilled martini glass. Top with chilled NUVO Sparkling Liqueur. Stir. Garnish with lime slice.

Abokado in Miama, FL, took the idea of the NUVO Dream and reinvented it into their own dream concoction.  This cocktail layers St-Germain, NUVO and sparkling wine together with fresh fruit juices.  The result is a beautiful, chilled, lightly flavored cocktail to refresh the senses.

NUVO-Dream (Abokado Style)

Slice of Orange

Sliced Strawberry

1 ounce St-Germain Liqueur

2 ounces NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

3-1/2 ounces Cava Sparkling Wine

Four Ice Cubes

Squeeze the orange slice and drop into a chilled champagne flute.  Add four ice cubes and one sliced strawberry.  Pour in St-Germain, and NUVO.  Top off with Cava Sparkling Wine.

This cocktail was engineered on the fly at one of the NUVO launch parties.  As with scores of mixed drinks free flowing at bars and cocktail lounges, only a handful of cocktails are actually creatively unique and may be pinpointed to one individual as the originator of the idea.  For those of you already trying this; excellent!

Nuevo

1-1/2 ounce Don Julio Tequila

3-4 ounces NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

Squeeze of Fresh Lime

Combine over rocks and stir gently.
