Tippling Scotch: Arnaud’s Special Cocktail

Finding a cocktail recipe worthy of corrupting a fine tippling of scotch definitely merits a few words of praise. Though there are a few reliable favorites such as the Blood & Sand, Bobby Burns and Rob Roy, it is always nice to find a “new” oldie but goodie to serve during the holidays.

Arnauds Special Cocktail photo copyright Cheri LoughlinArnaud’s Special Cocktail

2 ounces Scotch

1 ounce Dubonnet Rouge

3 dashes Orange Bitters

Orange Twist Garnish

Place liquid ingredients in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake or stir according to preference. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with fresh orange twist.

Unlike some scotch cocktails that cover the essence of the spirit altogether, Arnaud’s Special Cocktail retains the beautiful notes of scotch while dabbling with Dubonnet Rouge’s lush flavor.  Stir or shake this one just enough to chill it thoroughly so the drink does not become too watery.

Enjoy reading about this New Orleans cocktail’s history in the book, Vintage Spirits & Forgotten Cocktailsby Ted Haigh.

Cocktails from the Ex Files

There is a reason why Exes are indeed part of the past.  However convoluted existence means every once in a while their life weaves itself in with yours and wires cross for a little spark of complicated living.  ‘Tis the season for just that sort of electrical shock reminder to the circuit board.

Because the Honeymoon was over a long time ago. The Ex just chooses to revisit the wound now and again.

HoneymoonRitz Cocktail - photo property of Cheri Loughlin

1-1/2 ounce Applejack

1/2 ounce Lemon Juice

1/2 ounce Benedictine

1/4 ounce Triple Sec

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into chilled cocktail glass.

Once upon a time in the recesses of your mind the thought of separation and ultimate disconnect from the significant other in your life brought instant gratification.  The belief of a life full of bliss, complete with miles of smiles and endless relief was in sight. All inclusive happiness with the signing of nullification papers is a total myth, but the Separator and Miles of Smiles drinks just might get you to your happy place when the Ex comes knocking with yet another irritating request.

SeparatorBoston Shakers photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend. Strain into large rocks glass over fresh ice.

Miles of Smiles

1/2 ounce Canadian Whiskey

1/2 ounce Peppermint Schnapps

1/2 ounce Amaretto

Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into chilled shooter glass or serve in rocks glass over fresh ice.

Sometimes a face to face meet and greet is necessary. Donning the business as usual face must seem casual, ordinary and effortless.  No matter how difficult don’t let the Ex see you sweat, don’t let the Ex know you would rather walk on fiery coals or better yet stick pins in a voodoo doll in their honor than sit idly and have a civil conversation over coffee with them. A quick Lethal Injection or Stress Reliever to take the edge off might do the trick.

It’s the Aggravation of going back in time, revisiting old wounds, reliving the same old conversations and remembering exactly why particular people who were once part of the future are now a thing of the past. They drive you wacky with their Screwball behavior.  If you two were still together is there any doubt that you would be Simply Bonkers by now?

Don’t do it! Don’t fall into the trap. It simply isn’t worth the time, effort or brain damage. Getting suckered into the trap of “just one more time for old time’s sake” is not only a bad idea, but the worst idea of all time. Falling into bed with an Ex is like going back to a Bad Habit.

Scotch: The Sexiest of Spirits

The Dalmore 12 copyright Cheri Loughlin

Richard Paterson, Whyte & Mackay Master Blender, makes a statement with his candid, gregarious manner. His approach to leading a tasting is as bold and expressive as the scotch he represents; The DalmoreRichard Paterson The Nose The Damore Tasting copyAffectionately and professionally know as The Nose, Richard introduces newbie whisky drinkers to the exciting world of scotch through humor, touch, sound and taste.

I had the pleasure of attending The Dalmore tasting lead by Richard Paterson this summer at Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans.

His descriptive bravado brought sexy to scotch with every sniff, whiff and wafting.  He encouraged explicit techniques for tasting and sampling the scotch; sniffing three times, caress it, do it gently.  He often used a deep throaty growl as he allowed the scotch to linger long in the mouth.  When asked by someone in the tasting group what the sound was he replied if they didn’t know it, they would most likely never have the pleasure. Laughter swelled throughout the group of course, but this was common throughout the entire tasting.

Maybe I’m mischievous, but there is something sinuous about the way scotch flows from the bottle, swirls lovingly around the bowl of a glass and gracefully falls in trickling tears to a pool of glistening auburn spice.  The scent drifts gently, barely grazing the nose, hinting at the treasure buried within its rich luster.  It’s no wonder deeply flavored, dark spirits are thought to be the sexy spirits.  They contain true flavor, spice, sheen, warmth and retain a certain elegant quality.  All of which are among characteristics men and women seek in each other.

The Dalmore 12 Year Old Tasting

The Dalmore 12 Year copyright Cheri LoughlinAroma: Floral, nutty, chewy, orange

Taste: deep, throaty, lush, orange peel, spice warmth, pecan skin, light floral without becoming flowery. Caramel and vanilla rise to the surface in lilting fashion on the nose. Tiniest tinge of barely there sweetness.

Warms the entire mouth. The warmth slinks from tongue to toes. Makes one want to slip into something sleek and inviting, sexy and slinky.

The rest of my tasting notes are quickly jotted notes from the tasting room this summer. They are vaguely complete as I was captivated by Richard Paterson’s engaging personality and often failed to write complete tasting notes as each expression came into play. Each expression is however incredible and worthwhile to sample given the opportunity.

Dalmore Tasting Mat copyright Cheri Loughlin

Dalmore 15 Year

Tangerine primary. I get banana, buttery on the nose, extremely light, fragrant, nutty.

Richard Paterson used this expression in an example of whisky and chocolate comparison. Unfortunately the woman sitting next to me in this particular tasting session had already consumed the chocolates from six of the tasting mats in the row including mine before the tasting session began.  So I’ll rely on Richard’s description of what The Dalmore 15 with chocolate experience is like…paraphrasing he said to hold the chocolate in the mouth long allowing it to melt. Whisky with chocolate equals multiple orgasms.

Ladies and gentlemen, what’s not to love about that?

Dalmore Gran Reserva

This expression replaced the Cigar Malt. The Cigar Malt was taken off the market due to the fact people really thought this whisky was aged in cigar leaves. A shame really, since the Cigar Malt was such a fine whisky and still sought after by many.

Butter, toffee, spice, cinnamon, sweet

King Alexander III

The Dalmore King Alexander III copyright Cheri LoughlinAfter March 2011 (If I understood correctly) all stags will be raised metal on the bottle.

1990 Dalmore – 6 finishes – 40% alcohol

Implored not to add water to this expression. It’s special. 22 years old. Give it time on the palate.

Light on the nose. Spicy, honey, nutty, floral.

Acquaint yourself with a few items of interest about scotch and where it originates. Richard pointed out that there are 106 distilleries in operation in Scotland.  Each distillery location is significant to the outcome or final product of the scotch expression.  He began the tasting session with a map defining each area’s terrain and weather with Lowlands as feminine, Highlands as muscular and Islay as salty.  These contribute to the flavor profile of the scotch just as the shape of the stills used in the distillation process.  The Dalmore uses big fat bulbous stills they refer to as Big Bastards.

Keeping Halloween Classic: Blood & Sand

This classic cocktail leans to the sweeter side of cocktail creation, but stands as an excellent example of scotch’s use in drink recipes.  The tiniest hint of smoke intertwines with Cherry Heering’s playful chocolate notes for a richly rewarding sip.  Its underlying orange flavor adds the perfect touch of balance.  Though the recipe calls for blended scotch, it would be most interesting to sample the Blood and Sand with something a wee bit more robust such as Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Laphroaig 18 or The Macallan 17 since all carry heartier tones and would play rather nicely with the wisps of chocolate in the Cherry Heering Liqueur.

The Blood and Sand cocktail would also make a wonderful addition to a classic cocktail menu line up for Halloween parties this season without all the ghoulish gore.

National Comic Book Day: Super Hero Cocktail Recipes

Do you follow a favorite super hero through the pages of comic books?  If so, you might be interested to know that today has been set aside as National Comic Book Day.  Perhaps a masked man wearing spandex tights will be lurking around the corner handing out free comic books.  Better yet a damsel in distress (with broken high heel shoe of course) about to be preyed upon by some evil bad guy will be in your path today and you can swoop in to save the day.  You will be the super hero of your own comic book.

Who are the favorite super hero comic book stars of all time anyway?  I don’t really have the answer to that question, but the top answer on my Twitter page hands down was Spiderman.

White Spider starts sweet first and then moves to tart quite quickly.  Right away it smoothes again with a vanilla finish leaving one with the feeling that another sip is in order to decipher what just happened.  This is similar to extremely well made lemonade that will come around full circle and bite you where it really counts if you keep sipping and wondering what just happened.  Soon enough the White Spider will let you know it just did you in.

Frostbite makes a fabulous dessert style cocktail.  Use tequila with kick to it; something with depth of character, spicy in base.  Skip the mixto and go for 100% agave with pepper, vanilla and caramel note to complement the cacao and nutmeg.  This drink recipe isn’t too heavy on sweetness, but long on satisfaction.

Batman fans are truly in luck.  As one Twitter user pointed out Batman’s character strengths were his lack of ‘super human power’.  His super power happened to be detective work and dedication to honing his physical perfection.  It didn’t hurt that he was massively wealthy and could afford every super toy imaginable, but that’s another story.  Batman’s character list is long as well as the cocktail recipe possibilities that could be paired with any number of them friend or foe.

This is just a fun little cocktail.  The Reluctant Tabby plays up Dubonnet Rouge with fantastic appeal.  Possibly it’s the Scotch that downplays the sweet factor of limoncello.  Whatever it is, it just works.  Dubonnet just rolls over the tongue with luscious sophistication and flavor.  Love this little sipper.  Gary Regan created a winner here…of course.

The most bizarre, albeit fun, answer I received when asking about superhero favorites was Bananaman.  This was one I’d never heard of, but saw a short video firsthand as ‘proof’ of his existence.  It appears he begins as a boy, so it seems appropriate this superhero begin with a Mocktail recipe rather than cocktail.

Scotch Cocktail Recipes: Bobby Burns & My Darling

Last week a new cocktail creation contest rolled out on The Intoxicologist Facebook page: Scotch.  Participants were invited to create a simply made cocktail using five ingredients or less.  Participants were welcome to use scotch of their preference, but I would be recreating the cocktails with Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch and Grant’s Blended Scotch.

When I stopped in at a local bar & restaurant, Boiler Room, that serves fabulous old style cocktails this past weekend, the bartender asked if I’d like to try a Scotch cocktail he had been playing around with for the new cocktail menu; the Bobby Burns.  Bobby Burns isn’t new, but Chris put a great new spin on it with the inclusion of barely there allspice rim that he and the chef worked out.  There is also a little fiddling with the ingredient ratios that make Bobby Burns a Boiler Room knock out.

Bobby Burns – Chris Engles, Boiler Room – Omaha, NE

Bobby Burns Scotch Cocktail - adaption by Chris Engles - Boiler Room Omaha - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin2 parts Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch

1-1/2 part Carpano Antiqua Formula

1/4 part Benedictine

Lemon Twist

Allspice

Combine Glenfiddich, Carpano and Benedictine in a mixing glass with ice.  Stir until chilled.  Strain into a cocktail glass.  Dip fresh lemon strip twist into fresh allspice.  Rub lemon twist with allspice around rim of cocktail glass and place twist in cocktail.

Chris’ take on the Bobby Burns cocktail flavors out fabulously with allspice rounding out the deal.  The aroma lures one in for the first sip.  Carpano Antiqua Formula creates an excellent sounding board for the Glenfiddich Scotch.  Benedictine leaves just enough spice in the finish.  The kicker here is the allspice.  It definitely begins the cocktail and seals the deal beginning to end.

After tasting through entries for the scotch cocktail creation contest Bob Stafford’s, My Darling, took winning place.  There were a handful of great entries, but My Darling kept the integrity of Scotch flavor in mind and simplicity for duplication at the same time.

This cocktail rang out a little sweeter than my preferred taste for cocktails, especially Scotch cocktails – however My Darling plays to the strengths of Scotch rather than cover it up.  This is a great cocktail for someone who wants to play with the flavor of Scotch without going hard core straight on the rocks.

For the Love of Football

Tailgating during football season is almost as American as apple pie and hot dogs.  Tailgate parties set up in parking lots and grassy areas of game day venues have become as popular if not more so as gathering in front of the big screen TV for the big game.  The spirit of tailgating in America has become tradition and has spread to more sporting events than just football.

Beyond tailgating is the good old fashioned way of enjoying the great American sport of football; at home in the presence of friends cheering on your team and calling the referee out for plays they called wrong.  We never get our two cents in where the play calls lead, but we can call the shots where the drink recipes are concerned.  That is where The Intoxicologist gives you the opportunity to decide the best drink recipe for your game of choice whether tailgating or watching the game on the big screen.

When the game just isn’t going your way it’s Aggravation all the way.

A blowout win is sometimes cool, but when the matchup is equal and the game is close things are much more interesting.  It also causes a little tension in the air.  Beware of Contents Under Pressure.

Aviation Day Recipes to Celebrate the Day

In the beginning Aviation Day (August 19) was all about the celebration of flight, Orville Wright’s birthday and congratulating the men and women who made early aviation a reality.  Today celebration of Aviation Day is possible via proclamation by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 and cocktail hour at Joe’s pub or the retro version of the Speakeasy that make modern day celebrations so fun to well, celebrate or at least recognize with a cocktail or two.

Yesterday on Twitter a fellow ‘Tweeter’ wondered why someone would celebrate Aviation Day if the Aviation cocktail wasn’t the drink of choice since I posted alternative drink recipes loosely based upon the aviator theme.  My thought on the matter is celebration times should embrace everyone.  The Aviation drink recipe calls for Gin which excludes a majority of the population who don’t care for Gin as a base spirit.  Speaking as a writer; many will be writing about the Aviation cocktail and/or Aviation Gin today so right off the bat let’s get them out of the way to get on with more adventurous tours around the cocktail realm.

Which brings us to Aviation Gin.  I had the pleasure of sitting through most of the 21st Century Gin Seminar at Tales of the Cocktail 2009 where the discussion centered on a new classification of Gin.  Ryan Magarian may or may not have won the title of ‘Mr. Popularity’ among Gin enthusiasts that day depending on which side of the fence they decided to perch themselves upon, but he chooses to classify Aviation Gin within the New Western Gin category.  Paraphrasing his words at Tales of the Cocktail:

“Aviation Gin was created to define the area it comes from.  Let’s just be obnoxious.  They wanted to make a gin to be affective, damp, savory, full, organic, like Oregon, dry gin that can be sipped neat.  We wanted to take the classics we love and then we had to train bartenders to use it.  Two styles of gin – distilled and compounded gin.  There is also character or flavor designations.  These are focused on flavors.  New western is how Aviation defines itself.  They’ll stick with that until someone else comes up with something that sounds better than that.  Fun and sexy!”

Flying certainly sounds fun and sexy as long as two feet land on the ground safely.  Gin seems to be taking off within cocktail culture without a hint at taking a breather.  Some have strong juniper overtones while others share a barely there aroma inclusion.  Gin is breaking new ground in the spirit realm.  If you haven’t tried gin recently take a look around at a few of the newer spirits on the market to see this new ‘designation’ that created such a stir at Tales of the Cocktail ’09.

On to more exciting cocktails that have nothing to do with the word ‘aviation’ but have everything to do with blue skies and flight…

The Cruise Room is Denver’s first bar to open the day after Prohibition was repealed in 1933.  The bar is styled after one of the lounges on the original Queen Mary.  Their bar cocktail menu boasts a listing of classics and contemporary drink recipes.

Champagne is a favorite, so it had to be added to the listing of drinks of the day.  It isn’t possible to have Air Mail without the invention of flight.  Paper airplanes don’t count.

One cannot forget the B52 shot, named after the large bomber.  This drink recipe built for two should be built for a crowd considering the B52 is such a large machine and shots are better spent on large gatherings rather than one or two people.  So, duplicate this recipe or better yet, don’t.  Take The Intoxicologist advice and make peace with the B52 recipe and build a better bomb.

B52 (original)

1 ounce Kahlua

1 ounce Baileys Irish Cream

1 ounce Grand Marnier

Place liquids in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake, shake, shake.  Strain into two shot glasses.  Shoot away.

Grab your Aviator’s and head out into the sun to soak up some rays or grab a few bottles of spirits and mix up this beautifully vibrant cocktail of the same name.  The Aviator relies on five simple ingredients of all equal parts.  To keep it simple my ratios consisted of 1/2 ounce each with 1 full twist around the lemon.  Each spirit plays off the other in perfect harmony for a complex yet vibrant mix of delicate sweetness, gentle balance and oh, such ingenious play of flavor.

Chocolaty, orange with deep tones of spice; that is when Flutter starts to slip in across the sides of your tongue and meander down the middle, floating along the back until you realize the sip is gone and you must, must, must have another of this luscious concoction.  This is a terrific example of a drink recipe that uses a handful of ingredients to the utmost of their ability.  Kudos to Tony Conigliaro for whipping up this amazing cocktail recipe!
