Peanut Butter Cup Shot

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup was first introduced to the United States in 1928. I’m not certain who first came up with the idea of a peanut butter cup flavored cocktail to mimic the popular candied treat, but I am pretty sure it was a good idea. Just as the original Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup has altered its size and shape to fit the changing preferences of its devoted snack lovers, the full size cocktail will fit snuggly into a shot glass for a wonderfully warming round of starter sips.

1/2 ounce Silver Rum

1/2 ounce Peanut Crème Liqueur

1/2 ounce Crème de Cacao

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into shot glass.

Optional: Rim shot glass with powered peanut better found on the peanut butter / jelly aisle.

Erica from Erica’s Sweet Tooth has an entirely different take on Peanut Butter Cup Shots. She puts the shot in an actual chocolate cup. They end up looking just like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. This could get diet dangerous really quick!

If you’d rather sip your Peanut Butter Cup over lengthy conversation then go for a full sized cocktail. The Slow roasted Italian serves up a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Cocktail using real peanut butter in the recipe.

Daydreamer Desserts doesn’t mess around with her Peanut Butter Cup cocktail. It’s peanut butter and chocolate creamy goodness from cocktail to garnish. She combines vodka with Reese’s candies for her cocktail base. She finishes with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Minis as garnish.

Fun Girly Drinks for Girls Night

Blonde Bombshell Cocktail - photo and recipe by Mixologist Cheri Loughlin, The Intoxicologist

Blonde Bombshell Cocktail – photo and recipe by Mixologist Cheri Loughlin, The Intoxicologist

An evening out with best girlfriends is also the best time to road test fun girly drinks. No one judges a group of women gathered around laughing, having a good time. The only thing onlookers want to know is “what are they drinking” and “can I get a drink like that?” After all, many people are looking for fun drinks to try; they just don’t know where to look. I say, look to the nearest group of women enjoying a Girls Night Out.

Girls Night Out cocktails usually have a few things in common; sprinkles, sugared rims, pink hues, fruity flavors and blended to the max. Oh, and chocolate! One must never forget chocolate. Let’s face it; cocktails with these descriptors would not exist if people didn’t order them. Not only do people order and love them, people swipe the inside of cocktail glasses with their fingers and lick them with their tongues to get every tasty drop. So drinks of this nature, girly drinks, should not be looked upon with disdain. Girly drinks are like the candy aisle, cookie aisle, feel good aisle of cocktails. If these are the cocktails that make a group of women smile, laugh and feel good at the end of an evening then I want one of those! What the heck, make it two!

By the way, women aren’t the only ones drinking girly drinks. Real men like Cosmos, Appletinis and blended drinks, too. No more cocktail discrimination, please!

Fun Girly Drinks Night “Mixer”

Girls Night Out might include a round of shots, a cocktail or two and in the right bar, a smooth sailing blended drink. But Girls Night is also gathering your best girlfriends for a night in. Consider making your next Girls Night a literal “mixer” kind of get-together. Everyone brings a simple drink recipe with ingredients to make it. Share the recipes, sample the drinks and then start playing with the leftover ingredients. Create a few new fun girly drinks unique to your group of friends.

I’ve taken a few ingredients that often find their way into popular drink recipes. These are inexpensive liquors that are commonly found in almost any bare bones liquor store. Using an easy shot recipe as a starting point, I’ve adjusted the measurements to create three separate drinks; a cool layered shot, deliciously sweetened cocktail and sinfully decadent dessert style blender drink. All are fun drinks to try at your next Girls Night.

Layered shots are really cool to look at, but feel free to place all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake it to chill and strain into the shot glass. It will taste just fine.

1-1/2 ounce Butterscotch Schnapps

1 ounce Amaretto

1 ounce Half & Half

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into chilled martini glass.

This is smooth, creamy and delicious. It’s like sipping on a melty ice cream cone. Which of course made me think of Ice Cream!

Blended Blonde Bombshell – recipe by Cheri Loughlin, The Intoxicologist

1-1/2 ounce Irish Cream Liqueur

1-1/2 ounce Butterscotch Schnapps

1 ounce Amaretto

1 ounce Heavy Cream

2 scoops Vanilla ice Cream

Place all ingredients in blender. Blend until smooth. Add an extra scoop of ice cream for thicker shake like consistency if desired. Pour into hurricane style glass. Serve with straw and cocktail umbrella. Cocktail umbrellas and fru fru things are a must sometimes you know.

In the event you host a Girls Night mixer style get-together, please be sure everyone has a safe ride home.

Oatmeal Cookie Day Cocktail & Shots

Oatmeal Raisin Cookie 024 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

March 18 is National Lacy Oatmeal Cookie Day, sometimes identified with National Oatmeal Cookie Day which is actually April 30. The difference between the two; a lacy oatmeal cookie is delicate, wafer thin and crispy while the oatmeal cookie is a drop cookie that is chewy, chunky and usually full of nuts, spices and some sort of chewy dried fruit such as raisins. Regardless of which style of cookie you prefer, I offer a toast in honor of the day.

Oh, and I made real cookies, too! [Date Night Oatmeal Cookies] They are one of my favorites after all.

Much like a spiced up oatmeal cookie, this little shot contains lots of spicy cinnamon flavor with delicious creamy texture.

How sweet (and buttery) it is! This oatmeal cookie could get dangerous real fast. It’s like a buttery cookie, less spicy and a bit sweeter than the version above and yes… Very Good!

The Oatmeal Cookie Shot was so delicious I thought it a shame to sip it so quickly. A lengthier sipping time should be enjoyed.

Jello Shots Become Bite-Sized Desserts

Mexican Truffle Gelatin Jello Shot 016

Jello shots have been around since 1955 so the story goes. They are the go-to college party shot, Halloween candy shot and (admit it) mom’s little secret treat hiding in the back of the fridge for book club night. Just as classic cocktails and mixology have evolved through the years, Jello shots have gone from amateur night throw back shot to sophisticated connoisseur finger food. Forget the plastic cup. Bring on the tiny appetizer plates. Seriously, in the long, short and wiggly of it all, it’s still alcohol wrapped up in gelatin. Slam it, sip it or nosh it. Any way you bite it there’s alcohol content, so user beware. This isn’t kiddie candy, but Jello shots are still loaded with fun!

These Mexican Truffles are little bite-sized packages of dark chocolate goodness. So good, they are difficult to put down. The whipped cream and cinnamon garnish balance out the tasty morsel with creamy smoothness. Instead of the usual Jello shots that come to mind, these decadent small bite desserts are ideal for cocktail parties, hosting a girls night out game night or wrapping up your own Valentine’s Day box of chocolates.

Mexican Truffle Gelatin Jello Shot 017

Mexican Truffle – created by Cheri Loughlin

1/3 cup Chocolate Milk

1 teaspoon Grenadine

2 Knox Unflavored Gelatin Packets

1/3 cup Reposado Tequila

1/3 cup Hazelnut Liqueur

2 tablespoons Coffee Liqueur

Whipped Cream & Cinnamon Sprinkle Garnish

Place milk, grenadine and gelatin in saucepan. Stir gently. Heat over low heat until gelatin is completely dissolved (approximately 7 to 8 minutes). Remove from heat. Add tequila and liqueurs. Stir. Pour into small shallow glass dish. Chill until gelatin is completely set. Cut into approximately 20 to 24 squares or use simple cookie cutter for decorative shapes just before serving. Garnish with dollop of whipped cream and dust with cinnamon powder just before serving.

Peanut Butter & Jelly Shot & Cocktail

Interesting to note, the average child consumes 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before reaching graduation. There doesn’t seem to be a statistic surrounding the consumption of Peanut Butter and Jelly shots, but there should be one. Perhaps there should also be a statistic for the number of shots consumed before the average person finishes college. Then again, maybe not.

The PB&J shot recipe (and peanut butter and jelly flavor combination) is so popular there are vodkas flavored to taste similar to the brown bag sandwich many of us grew up eating in elementary school. In fact, there are numerous shot and cocktail recipe variations to the  classic Peanut Butter & Jelly flavor combination.

Cheeky Tart

If you love Caramel Apple cocktails then the Cheeky Tart shot is right up your alley. Cheeky Tart might be a small shot sip, but it’s caramel apple through and through. This particular shot was inspired by a guest at a Girl’s Night Out party. Seems highly appropriate to add to your Girl’s Night Out list of go-to drinks.

Oreo Cookie Cocktail & Shot

For many a day doesn’t get much better when it begins as National Oreo Day. It doesn’t matter if you eat them directly from the package. Who can do that by the way?! If you’re a twist, lick and dunk in milk sort of person. Or if your must have Oreo is the super double stuffed kind. *Raising hand* on that one. The honest to goodness truth is there isn’t a wrong way to consume an Oreo. And yes, that includes enjoying the Happy Hour kind.

Banana Cream Pie Shots

Traditional banana cream pie calls for buttery graham cracker crust or flaky baked dough crust, layers of freshly sliced bananas, topped with creamy custard and fresh whipped cream or meringue. But quick fix Banana Cream Pie served in a shot glass is way more my speed. Dessert in a glass. Sipping dessert. Just the way I like it. How about you?

March 2 is National Banana Cream Pie Day

Keep in the spirit of a traditional layered Banana Cream Pie with a layered shot.

Layered Banana Cream Pie

1/2 ounce Coffee Liqueur

1/2 ounce Licor 43

1/2 ounce Banana Liqueur

Layer chilled spirits in large shot glass or shooter glass. Layering can be achieved by gently pouring spirits over back of bar spoon one on top of the other. Order heaviest weighted spirits to lighter weighed spirits.

It’s always more fun to share dessert. It’s even more fun to share a shot of dessert. This Banana Cream Pie shot recipe is slightly different, shaken rather than layered and built for sharing. Party on!

1/2 ounce Banana Liqueur

1/2 ounce White Crème de Cacao

1/2 ounce Vodka

1/2 ounce Half & Half
