Driscoll’s Berries Inspire Fresh Cocktails

Driscoll's Berry Tour 113 - Driscoll's Strawberry

Driscoll’s strawberry picked fresh from Driscoll’s strawberry field. Driscoll’s berries are touched one time, picked ripe, placed in clamshell package and shipped fresh.

My recent “field to fork” berry education and taste excursion with Driscoll’s berries inspired one of my recent fresh berry cocktails. If you follow me on Twitter you may have caught several berry tweets straight from Driscoll’s offices and berry fields a few weeks ago. So you already know Driscoll’s invited me and a few others out to tour the Driscoll’s facilities and attend the Pebble Beach Food & Wine 2013 Grand Tasting event. Yum!

This isn’t just a photographic berry tour, though. There is a fresh berry cocktail with Driscoll’s berries at the end of the post, so stay tuned for a few seconds.

Driscoll's Berry Tour 087

In no particular order: Ani Phyo, Kathy Casey, Tess Masters, Allison Kociuruba, Amy Roskelley, Natalie Monson, Dede Wilson, Maria and Josh Lichty, Jaden and Scott Hair, Cheri Loughlin, Kim Allen, Driscoll’s representatives

Driscoll's Berries Clamshell Pack 204

Driscoll’s strawberries in clamshell packaging. Driscoll’s introduced clamshell packaging to the marketplace in the early 1990’s.

When the Driscoll’s representative invited me on this tour I was psyched. I was already familiar with the product. Driscoll’s berries have occupied space in my fridge (and family’s bellies) for years. I could go on and on about the nutrient factor and how good Driscoll’s berries are for your health, but honestly I just know they taste good.

Season's Finest Blackberries

Driscoll’s blackberries are known as the “Cabernet of Berries” for their wine-like, earthy taste.

My favorite Driscoll’s berries by far are the blackberries. The blackberries I sampled while touring were incredibly juicy and HUGE! Definitely the Season’s Finest. I learned that berries should be Oslo Iced Tea Fresh Blackberry Cocktailstored optimally at 32 degrees to preserve freshness. But berries should be eaten at room temperature for optimum flavor.

I’ll be honest, I also love fresh blackberries ice cold, muddled and served liquid… as in fresh blackberry cocktails like Take Me to the Tropics Sangria, Berrily a Mojito and Oslo Iced Tea.

Driscoll's Berry Tour 113

Driscoll’s strives to grow the most amazing and sensory delightful berries an individual could possibly desire. Their commitment to consumer delight begins in a germ-free lab where technicians meticulously handle precious tiny seedlings with tweezers.

Driscoll's Berry Tour 087

Seedlings move to nurseries. Once these plants are ready, they are prepared for planting to other facilities.

Driscoll's Berry Tour 087

Driscoll's Berry Tour 138

The strawberry fields’ tour was spectacular with beautiful mountains in the distance.

Driscoll's Berry Tour 087

And yes, strawberries straight from the vine are indeed delicious!  You can get that same picked-from-the-vine taste right at home. Remember, Driscoll’s berries are picked, packed and shipped while handling the berries one time only. Cold chain management is the key to preserving the integrity of their fruit.

About that cocktail I promised you…

Strawberry Fields Forever Cocktail 230

7 Fresh Driscoll’s StrawberriesStrawberry Fields Forever Cocktail 254

1 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

1-1/2 ounce Gin

3/4 ounce Elderflower Liqueur

1/2 ounce Simple Syrup

1 ounce Club Soda

Sugar & Lemon Slice

Fresh Strawberry Garnish

Swirl lemon slice around lip of rocks glass. Roll lip of glass in sugar. Refrigerate glass until use. Muddle strawberries in bottom of cocktail shaker. Add lemon juice, gin, liqueur and simple syrup with ice. Shake vigorously to blend. Strain into sugar rimmed rocks glass over fresh ice. Top with club soda. Garnish with fresh strawberry.

Strawberry Fields Forever tastes fresh, delicately sweet with hint of lemonade freshness with the slightest suggestion of tart.

FTC disclosure: This learning opportunity was paid for in full by Driscoll’s, but all post content, photography, commentary and opinion is completely mine.

Special thank you to Driscoll’s for inviting me along on this amazing journey. Follow Driscoll’s on Facebook and Twitter @driscollsberry.

Review: EPIC Peach Vodka

Epic Peach Vodka 047 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

70 Proof / 35% alcohol

Suggested Retail Price: $12.99 / 750ml

Availability: Epic began shipping to approximately 30 US states in February with the goal to become nationwide as the year progresses.

EPIC Vodka is available is Classic and will be available in Whipped Cream, Kiwi Strawberry, Cherry, Cake and Coconut flavors at 70 proof / 35% alcohol. More flavors projected at a later date.

EPIC Peach Vodka Tasting Notes

Color: ClearEpic Classic - Peach Vodka 045 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Aroma: Peach for sure. Sweet succulent peach. Not sugary peach, but juicy peach. No burn.

Tasted Neat: Sweet! Not as sweet as liqueurs, but was definitely surprised at the sweetness in this 35% alcohol flavored vodka. Some flavored vodkas of this same alcohol content are not nearly as sweet. Peach flavor is very good. Ripe peach. Some burn. Slight artificial flavor in the aftertaste, but nice juice peach in the initial taste.

Mouth Feel: Medium. Bit thinner than the EPIC Classic, but still rolls over the tongue rather nicely.

Epic Peach - Stoli Peachik Comparison 056 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Comparable Spirit: Compared this to Stoli Peachik which contains peach flavor and is the same 35% alcohol content. EPIC Peach is much sweeter with more peach flavor and less burn.

Possible Uses, Pairings and / or Cocktails: I see fresh spring cocktails in my future. Variations on Fuzzy Navels for sure. Simple Peach Vodka and Sprite (Zero if watching the girlish figure) or Soda would be a breeze.

EPIC Vodka has a few recommendations as well…

St. Zipaine

Champagne might be the first bubbly that comes to mind when one thinks of celebration cocktails, but sparkling sake mingles and tingles its way through cocktail culture with a burst of bubbly excitement. Its versatility is apparent as it is excellent sipped straight from the bottle, lovely fluted and incorporates beautifully in mixed cocktails. Zipang Sparking Sake 6 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Review: Absolut Brooklyn

The latest Absolut ‘Cities’ launch brings new flair to the Absolut bottle style with depiction of the omnipresent Brooklyn Stoop.  The bottle, designed by Spike Lee, embraces the foundation of the Brooklyn community with vibrant color.  Look closely to find clever mentions of Brooklyn within the stoop itself.  But most notable, the Lars Olsson Smith seal has been altered for the first time ever.  This limited edition Cities offering seal portrays Lars wearing a baseball cap and glasses reminiscent of Spike Lee.

Spiked Core created by Cheri Loughlin - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Absolut Brooklyn Tasting

Aroma: Fresh cut apples; juicy. No alcohol burn. Barely there hint of spice. Simple lusciousness indicating sweetness to the tiniest degree.

Taste: The ginger lies in wait beneath the aroma showing through as primary, glowing forth with subtle spicy charm.  Apple softens from the aroma of red juicy to fresh baked with hints of peel bringing a bit of depth to the fruit flavor.  Lots of spicy play with overlay of cinnamon and sprinkling of pie crust.

This takes me a little off guard, a bit surprising.  Not entirely an apple fan when it comes to cocktail and juice flavorings, I am quite taken by the appeal of this offering.  Though it seems a bit off season as to its spring to summer delivery since the spirit comes across more warming, Absolut Brooklyn delivers well on the palate.  This will definitely make bobbing for apples quite the treat at the next Halloween party when the season rolls around.

Spiked Core – created by Cheri Loughlin

2 measures Absolut Brooklyn

1/2 measure St-Germain Liqueur

1/4 measure Benedictine

1 measure White Cranberry Juice

1 measure Ginger Ale

Crystallized Ginger Round Garnish

Fill highball glass with ice.  Add liquids in order given.  Stir.  Garnish with crystallized ginger round inserted directly in drink.

This drink builds upon the core flavors of apple and spice by gently enhancing the fruited sweetness of apple with St-Germain and building upon the spicy overlay with Benedictine.  Choose to stop building the drink with the first three ingredients and a lovely warming cocktail emerges for fall to winter sipping.  Shake it over ice and strain into a martini glass.  Continue with all the ingredients over ice for a light and delicious apple inspired drink for summertime sipping.

This newest ‘Cities’ inspired offering honors and supports the Brooklyn community with Absolut Vodka donating $50,000 from profits from the sale of Absolut Brooklyn to Habitat for Humanity New York City.

Make Mine a Manhattan Holiday

If you can’t make it to Manhattan for the holidays, bring Manhattan to a glass near you. Who would have thought there could be more than a handful of variations on the classic Manhattan recipe?  This tried and true favorite has been tweaked, pinched, played with and adapted in so many ways it becomes difficult to decipher where the classic begins and ends. With so many degrees in flavor preference and style, the base recipe sees adjustment with flavored liqueurs, juices and additional spirits.

The variations of Manhattan recipes below bring a wide variety of contrasting styles to the forefront while keeping to the thread of at least one thing in common; bourbon.  The first few closely match the classic Manhattan with call brands. After that the Manhattan gets a little more interesting.

Making of a Legend

Those who become legendary offer more than empty notoriety behind a name.  They are more than the latest movie theater listing or rag magazine headline.  Legends offer a guiding light toward the future.  Dale DeGroff created an exceptional cocktail for a Legends event hosted by Oprah Winfrey in 2005.  This event honored a specific group for their legendary role in history.  There are extraordinary people living among us every day with valuable lessons to impart and amazing stories to share.  These could be those with youthful perception or those who have become frail and dependent.  The question is; will you take time to listen?

Legends Cocktail created by Dale DeGroff for Oprah Winfrey Legends Ball event in 2005 - photo property of Cheri LoughlinLegends Cocktail – The Essential Cocktail, Dale DeGroff

1 small piece Ginger Root

1/2 ounce Cointreau

1/2 ounce St-Germain

1-1/2 ounce Vodka

1/2 ounce White Cranberry Juice

3/4 ounce Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice

Spiral Lemon Peel Garnish

Orange Slice, Sugar & Ground Ginger for Dusting Glass

Combine 4 parts sugar to 1 part ground ginger in mixing tray.  Rim cocktail glass with orange slice.  Dip outer rim of glass in sugar mix to frost.  Set aside and then chill the glass.

Place ginger root and liqueurs in bottom of mixing glass.  Muddle.  Add vodka and juices with ice.  Shake well to blend and chill.  Strain into chilled ginger sugar rimmed glass.  Garnish with spiral lemon peel.

Notation: The Legends Cocktail just wouldn’t be the same without the easy to mix frosted rim.  The sweetly spiced gingered rim tips off this cocktail perfectly sip after sip.  Read about the creative thought process behind the Legends Cocktail in Dale DeGroff’s book, The Essential Cocktail.  You’ll find this recipe on page 240 in the Innovations chapter along with a few other simply irresistibly delightful concoctions.

Sexiest Valentine Cocktail Spirit

There is one reason above and beyond any other rationale that St-Germain Liqueur makes the supreme show stopping sexiest liquid gift for Valentine’s Day this year; it has the sleekest, sexiest bottle ever to hit liquor store shelves.  The St-Germain bottle begs one to gently grace a finger along its silky smooth lines and curvaceous edges.   This beautiful elixir stands tall and graceful tempting the senses, teasing the palates of so many since its introduction to the U.S. market.

The St-Germain Cocktail

2 parts Sparkling Wine, Sauvignon Blanc or Dry White Wine

1-1/2 parts St-Germain

2 parts Club Soda

Fill a tall Collins glass with ice. Add Champagne first, then St-Germain, then Club Soda. Stir completely.* Garnish with a lemon twist, making sure to squeeze essential oils into glass.  *St-Germain is heavier than wine, thus it will settle to the bottom unless mixed thoroughly.

St-Germain is an artisanal French liqueur created only once per year in late spring.  It is said to be 100% all natural with no preservatives.  It is created from elderflower blossoms in limited quantities.  Officially St-Germain tastes like tropical fruit, citrus and orchard fruits.  The flavor is soft and lilting on the tongue making it perfect for light sipping or adding that finishing touch to delicate cocktails.

La Rosette

1/2 part St-Germain

Top with Champagne, Brut Rosé or Dry Sparkling Wine

Pour ingredients into a chilled fluted glass and stir lightly. Float half a strawberry, a few raspberries or garnish with a lemon twist. Drink a toast to the elegance of simplicity and the divinity of fraises fraîches.  The addition of Brut Rosé makes this usually named St-Germain & Champagne cocktail the La Rosette due to its beautifully blush color.

My first taste of St-Germain: “I can’t describe what the liqueur even tastes like. It is light, yet abundant, but not overpowering. It is floral, but not flowery and strong like roses. It has a hint of fruit in it, yet there is not a particular fruit to distinguish in the flavor. – It is a complicated liqueur, yet brings a dynamic to a drink that is unmatched. It is a layering effect that happens when a drink is put together with forethought. When you drink a cocktail such as this, you take a sip and think to yourself that it tastes really good. Then you take another sip and realize there is another element in the drink you hadn’t caught the first taste around. That adds new depth and character to it and you want to taste more to see if you catch something else. That is exactly what the St~Germain does for a drink if it is added in the right proportion.”

Dia Del Amor

1 part St-Germain

1-1/2 parts Reposado Tequila

3/4 part Fresh Lime

2 dashes Hot Sauce

Shake and strain into chili salt rimmed rocks glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.

Cherub’s Cup

1 part St-Germain

2 parts Vodka, Citrus Vodka, or Hendricks

1/4 part Fresh Lemon

1/4 part Simple Syrup

Muddled Strawberry

Top with Brut Rosé

Shake and strain over fresh rocks in a collins glass. Top with Brut Rosé or Brut Champagne. Garnish with a strawberry.

B&B Liqueur: Timeless Classic

This creation by Gary Regan began as a charming cocktail with the wispy sound of summer; Botanical Breeze.  Gary paired B&B with one of my favorites, St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur.  Usually my preference is a cocktail shaken over ice and then strained into a chilled martini glass.  This allows the cooled spirits to retain their true flavors without becoming watered down through the eventual melting of ice as the cocktail sits.  As much as I hesitate to differ with Gary Regan’s fabulous creation, the Botanical Breeze as originally called for turned out too intensely flavored for my palate.  However, the essence of the entire drink was superb and wanted for nothing to balance the flavor.  The only option I could think of was the addition of a few dollops of ice.  Nothing more, nothing less was needed.  Simple as that!  The Botanical Breeze happened to be so fabulous I helped myself to two.

Kiwi Slice Garnish

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into chilled champagne coupe. Float peeled and sliced kiwi slice as garnish. (You’ll notice no garnish of kiwi in my photo.  It was Christmas Day and sometimes The Intoxicologist fails to plan ahead with proper supplies of fresh fruit from the grocer.  My apologies Gary.)

The shortened story of B&B Liqueur:Midtown Manhattan. Early 30’s. Intense Jazz. Hip Cliques. Supreme Cocktails. Mingling of the Finest; Benedictine and French Brandy creating a monumental classic – B&B Liqueur. The rest is history!
