Shots of Irish Gold

Though March 17 honors the death of Saint Patrick it is also a time of international celebration toasting the luck of the Irish. When St. Patrick’s Day rolls around the truly festive dye their hair green for luck, wear green to avoid finger pinches and drink green beer to celebrate. There are also rounds of shots at every bar stop.

Sampling the Irish Spirit

St. Patrick’s Day reaches beyond green beer and Jello shots. There is even more to it than Irish Car Bombs and pints of Guinness backed by mandatory rounds of Irish Whiskey. There are bars offering Irish Whiskey tasting flights and those serving Irish themed cocktails for those interested in more than the stop and go shots. Venture beyond the ordinary while celebrating the holiday. Take the opportunity to sample something new.

1 ounce Blended Scotch

1/2 ounce Dry Vermouth

1/2 ounce Sweet Vermouth

Dash Peychaud’s Bitters

Orange Twist Garnish

Combine liquids in mixing glass with ice. Stir to chill. Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with orange twist.

Perfect vermouth combination arrives across the lips first and then suddenly the smokiness and warming of the whiskies shine through. Bitters add hint of spice in the tail end. Some dark spirited cocktails can land heavily on the palate, but this one glides easily across the tongue.

Dublin 8 - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinDublin 8

2 ounces Irish Whiskey

2 ounces Orange Juice

2 ounces Ginger Ale

Quarter of 1 Fresh Lime – Squeezed

Place ice in highball glass. Add whiskey, orange juice and ginger ale. Squeeze quartered lime over top and drop into glass.

Ironically this picks up nutty, peanut butter notes. Orange citrus is there of course, too. Blends in right nicely.

Original drink created by Jeremy Sidener called for 3 ounces orange juice, 3 ounces ginger ale and lemon slice garnish. In my opinion this masked the Irish Whiskey beyond recognition. Taking the filler down just a notch allows the whiskey a little room to play without over doing it. Dublin 8 is a great thirst quencher.

Plan ahead. Designate sober drivers, arrange for a cab or take advantage of free rides many cities provide during holiday times. Just don’t drive buzzed.

The Irish Hungarian Shot

Admittedly The Irish Hungarian received a little stir after the photo for thorough sipping. It’s rather good. It’s no wonder shots are a fave of Friday night revelers. My only wish is these little flavor packed goodies stayed on the tongue a little longer so they could really be savored.

2/3 ounce Irish Cream (chilled)

1/3 ounce Zwack (chilled)

Layer each in a shot glass in order given.  Shoot responsibly. Jager could be substituted for Zwack.

Flavor of the Irish Cream comes across first and then “Bam!” the spice of Zwack strikes with zing all over the taste buds. This would also be the perfect blend for weekend coffee.

Irish Mock-achino

Irish Mock-achino is a warm, wonderful Mocktail take on the traditional Irish Coffee.  I usually reserve Irish Coffee for leisurely Sunday mornings when nothing else pressing will take me away from the house.  With the Irish Mock-achino Mocktail there will be no worries about sipping and taking a spin behind the wheel.  This version is completely alcohol free for everyone to enjoy any day of the week.

Shake That Irish Mint-Tini

Ever order a cocktail and see the lazy shake? You know what I mean. Liquids and ice go into the shaker. Then the bartender barely lifts the shaker and one…two…tosses the shaker back and forth while looking distracted down the bar. Even worse, your cocktail gets delivered barely chilled, barely shaken in a warm glass. Hopefully there isn’t smeared lipstick on it too. No, no. Not how it’s done.

If the cocktail calls for shaking. Do it like a pro! Chill that sucker!

Luck of the Irish Flows with Boston Cocktailians

Last year Boston bartenders rallied together to create a few St. Patrick’s Day cocktails to keep revelers sipping throughout the month of March. Rather than keep the holiday to one long party thrashing, take time to muddle, stir and sip a few of these crafty libations that have generously been made available by the creative cocktailians behind the muddling stick.

Shamrock Cocktail Sparkles

St. Patrick’s Day cocktails and drinks do not have to be all about Irish whiskey, green beer and Jello shots.  Some chatter within the cocktail world in the past has been that vodka might have slipped within the dead zone.  However rarely will one see a bar without rows of premium vodka for martinis or flavored vodkas for fun sipping cocktails whether the theme is Girl’s Night Out, Date Night or just winding down from a long day at work.  St. Patrick’s Day will be no different.  Party goers like to join the crowd for a spirited green food coloring tinted beer or shot of whiskey, but once the night is in full swing it’s back to the basics; drinking what one likes and knows.  For many that means vodka based cocktails.

Dying a Sweet Death for St. Patrick’s Day

Absinthe is a well-known favorite spirit of renowned artists and literary giants such as Van Gogh, Edgar Allen Poe and Oscar Wilde. Since this spirit is once again available in the United States, it has seen a surge in popularity as the authentic way to add a touch of history to classic cocktails. The magical aura of this spirit fits in Champagne Cocktail photo property Cheri Loughlinperfectly with St. Patrick’s Day with its greenish hue.
