Yazi Ginger Vodka

Yazi Ginger Vodka - Cheri Loughlin Wine & Spirits Stock Photography
Ginger Vodka use ideas: Anything with orange; Ginger Vodka plus apple cider equals delicious; Ginger Vodka with lime juice and splash of soda and perhaps sprig of mint; Honey and lemon often great companions to ginger; Ginger vodka and lemon vodka topped with ginger ale; Ginger Vodka with apples and pears or with cider and dash of whiskey bitters; Ginger Vodka with apple, pear, orange liqueurs or juices.

Big thank you to those who happened to be available on Twitter for a little Q&A chat about what they might mix with ginger vodka.

Tale of Two Limes

Always on the lookout for variations on traditional cocktails, Hangar 1 Kaffir Lime Vodka caught my eye for not only a classic styled tonic creation – but lower calorie version at that!  The Hangar 1 Kaffir Lime claims notes of wood, white pepper and cucumber.  My take is superior lime flavor with higher quality feel; or more bang for your low calorie drink buck so to speak.   More flavor in the vodka means less need in the glass for those watching the waistline.  Add in a wee bit of fresh lime, diet tonic and a magically delicious a low calorie, high quality drink awaits.

Beyond Margaritas

At first glance Tequila Ocho Plata may not capture the eye as some tequila does.  The bottle is clean, unexaggerated and free of adornment or glass etchings to secure consumer attention.  Rather than place superfluous consideration upon the container, great time and effort have apparently gone into the character of the spirit itself.

Tequila Ocho Plata 9 photo copyright Cheri LoughlinThis grassy, modestly spicy tequila surprised me.  Tequila Ocho Plata is slightly thicker in viscosity than expected, buttery, smooth with a wee hint of vanilla in its notes and a variable of spice that is just enough without going overboard.  There is barely there sweetness that takes the usual tequila fire from the tongue in perfect harmony.  The complexity of character is evident, yet Tequila Ocho Plata remains balanced from beginning to end making this an all around easy sipper.

As this one warmed in the glass hints of mocha or coffee rose to the forefront.  With vanilla and buttery charm already filling the palate something more original beckoned in the way of cocktail creation.

Ocho Limón Café – created by Cheri Loughlin

1 ounce DeKuyper Buttershots

3 thin Lemon Slices

Diet or Regular Tonic Water

Place all ingredients (including lemon slices) in a tall glass over ice.  Mildly stir the lemon wheels without completely crushing them to gain just a hint of the lemon flavor.

The faint hint of coffee flavor in the Ocho Limón Café rises to the forefront immediately as it melds with the distinct flavor of Tequila Ocho Plata.  The fresh lemon in the cocktail brings out more of the coffee tones than when Tequila Ocho Plata is sipped neat.  There are caramel chocolate tones without any sugary after effects.   Ocho Limón Café reminds me in some ways of Patron XO Café in flavor without the thick sugary feel.

Tequila Ocho Plata 6 photo copyright Cheri LoughlinTequila Ocho suggests enjoying first experiences with this tequila from snifters or Cognac glasses and then taking one’s sweet time in doing so to savor every nuance of the spirit.  Once consumers begin sampling tequilas such as Tequila Ocho and truly find there are degrees of character rather than just some undefined spirit in a shot glass waiting to be downed in three seconds flat, it will be realized that tequilas can be slowly appreciated and should indeed incorporate more cocktails than the Margarita.  Tequila Ocho’s character runs deep with diverse notes one might find surprising.  I did.  Tequila Ocho’s website
contains a valid point at the bottom of each page:  “Inviting you to change your perception”

I definitely changed mine.  Now it is your turn.

Keeping Holidays Low Calorie with Classic Cocktails

The holiday season typically means more festive occasions for tempting treats and delicious cocktails.  Each liquid delight that passes the lips means extra curve to the girlish hips.  All those holiday nips and sips add up by the time the New Year’s Eve ball drops.  Enjoy a few figure friendly classic cocktails during the holiday season and the word diet won’t ever reach your New Year’s Resolution list when January rolls around.

Most bars serve typical four ounce or more martinis.  Scale down the classic vodka or gin martini to two ounces for smaller portion. This serves as added bonus in keeping the cocktail chilled throughout the entire sip time and fewer calories in the glass.

2 parts Gin or Vodka

Dry Vermouth

Lemon Twist

Place ice in a martini glass with 1/2 ounce dry vermouth.  Set aside.  Place Gin or Vodka in mixing glass with ice.  Stir or shake according to preference.  Swirl vermouth and ice in glass. Toss from martini glass. Strain vodka or gin into prepared chilled glass. Zest lemon twist garnish over glass and insert into martini. Notation: Keep in mind that dirtying a martini with olive juice and olives as garnish adds extra calories to the glass.

The Tonic is one of the easiest drinks of all to mix and complete with your spirit of choice. Most bars use tonic from a gun which is disappointing at best, since gun tonic comes across decidedly flat most often. A beautiful feature of purchasing diet tonic water for parties is there are a variety of flavored diet tonic waters now available on the market.

Place ice in highball glass. Add base spirit of choice. Top with diet tonic. Squeeze in fresh lime and drop into drink. Stir.

Perhaps one of the most widely recognized drinks by its generic name of Vodka & Cranberry, the Cape Cod or Cape Codder is easily converted into a lower calorie drink without sacrificing taste. While one could go with the diet version of cranberry juice, my recommendation is to stick with the light version and keep the extra couple of calories.  Those few calories really are worth the flavor since diet cranberry juice really does taste “diet.”

The Caipirinha is an easy drink to order out and keep low calorie if you plan ahead. Ask the bartender to make this drink with limes and Cachaca only, leaving out all sugar. Make sure you’ve tucked a sugar substitute packet (such as Truvia or Splenda) with you for on the go travel and stir it in the drink once it has been delivered front and center upon your bar napkin.

If tequila is your spirit of choice, skip the margarita and move onto something a little more glowing. Opt for the Tequila Sunrise with orange juice inclusion rather than triple sec. Tropicana makes Trop50 lower calorie orange juice and pomegranate blueberry.

21 Must Try Classic Cocktail Recipes

Martini - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

This post has been updated from The Intoxicologist Is In blog. Three more ‘Must Try Drinks’ have been added to the list. If you have suggestions, please add them to the comment section or drop a line through the email. Thanks!

Martini Fruit Background photo copyright Cheri LoughlinYou have heard about, seen it and possibly gone out and tried it yourself.  What am I talking about?  The 21 Drink Salute.  You know the one.  Turn twenty-one and it is the rite of passage to go out and drink twenty-one alcoholic drinks within the day.  This rite of passage is a bad idea for reasons too numerous to count.

However, thinking on the whole idea of people going out to drink when they turn twenty-one sets the thinking cap in motion.  They are dipping into the waters of drinking, assuming they have never imbibed before coming of age.  These newbie drinkers will try anything their buddies place before them and dare them to throw down the hatch.  Not a quality drinking experience to be sure.  But it gives one pause to think.  There certainly are a fair amount of partakers out there who drink whatever is on the cocktail menu or never veer from their tried and true standard.

Why not be like the twenty-one year old newbie and dabble in cocktails that revolutionized the cocktail as we know it?   Instead of trying them all in one day, take the time to savor the flavor.

Mockup Margarita Mocktail created by Cheri Loughlin - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinMargarita

Everyone has their version of the perfect Margarita and their favorite tequila to add to the equation.  Here is a basic recipe to build upon so you won’t have to pick up a mix from the corner grocery.

2 ounces Tequila

1 ounce Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice

1/2 ounce Triple Sec

Lime Wedge for Garnish

Salt for Rimming

Rim edge of margarita glass with salt.  Combine liquid ingredients in cocktail shaker filled two-thirds with ice.  Shake for 10 to 15 seconds.  Place ice in margarita glass.  Strain contents of shaker into margarita glass.  Garnish with lime wedge.  To upgrade this margarita use quality tequilas such as Patron Silver or Reposado and Cointreau or Grand Marnier in place of the Triple Sec.

Van Gogh Vodka Martini - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinMartini

A “real” martini doesn’t have to be difficult, yet there are so many ways to mess it up.  Stirred, shaken, up with a twist (is that a lemon or lime?), with an olive (stuffed with blue cheese, almonds, jalapeño, or pimento?) gin or vodka and did you say dirty or dry or extra dry?  Oh, so many questions.  This martini is pretty straight forward.  When you saddle up at the bar all you have to say is, “Tanqueray 10 Martini dry, up with a twist, please” and then sit back and watch an inexperienced bartender squirm and an experienced bartender do their job.  Make sure you get that “please” and “thank you” in there with a nice tip.

2-1/2 ounces Tanqueray 10 Gin

Noilly Pratt Dry Vermouth

Lemon Twist

Place ice in a martini glass.  Drizzle approximately 1/4 to 1/2 ounce of dry vermouth in the ice and set aside.  Measure out Tanqueray 10 Gin into a cocktail shaker filled one-third full of ice.  Shake or swirl the gin (depending on your theory of “bruising” the gin) for at least fifteen seconds.  Your goal is to chill the gin thoroughly.  Take the martini glass with vermouth in hand.  Swirl the glass so the vermouth coats the inside and pour out.  Do not shake the glass until every drop is gone.  Strain the contents of the cocktail shaker into the vermouth coated martini glass.  Take your lemon twist and circle it around the rim of the martini glass before placing it halfway on the edge and partially inside the gin as garnish.  Serve and drink while still chilled.

NUVO Lost its Sparkle? Bring the Twinkle Back

NUVO Sparkling Liqueur.  You partied with it the night before or maybe the week before with its beautiful bubbly effervescent glow.  The lilting tingles tickled your fancy to the wee hours of the morning.  You thought there could never possibly be an end to NUVO’s glory until…this delightful little joy went flat while you caught a few winks of shut eye.  While you rejuvenate, NUVO flattens.  What to do?  Why waste good NUVO?  There must be something.  Right?!

Sparkling NUVO Gone Flat Tasting - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

The first thought might be to just top NUVO off with a bit of the bubbly for renewed freshness.  If that floats your boat, fine.  But this only waters NUVO down.  Begin building NUVO’s flavor profile back up with the basics: Gin, Rum, Vodka, and Tequila.

NUVO & Rangpur – created by Cheri Loughlin

NUVO & Rangpur – NUVO Sparkling Liqueur cocktail created by Cheri Loughlin - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin1-1/2 ounce Tanqueray Rangpur Gin

1 ounce flat NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

1/4 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

1/4 ounce Raspberry Liqueur

1-1/2 ounce Diet Tonic Water

Combine all liquids (except tonic water) in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to chill. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Top off with diet tonic water.

This is similar to a Gin & Tonic with an updated, straight-up twist.  NUVO lovers get their fizz back with the addition of the tonic water while keeping the pretty pink hue and flavor of the raspberry blossom.  The Rangpur Gin creates a fabulous base for gin fans and those who are just discovering this lovely spirit.  The Rangpur lime zing adds just enough splash to give NUVO & Rangpur the vitality it needs.

Italian Tropics – created by Cheri Loughlin

Italian Tropics – NUVO Sparkling Liqueur cocktail created by Cheri Loughlin - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin1-1/2 ounce Spiced Rum

1/2 ounce Tuaca

2 ounces Pineapple Orange Juice

1 ounce flat NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

Pineapple Chunks for Garnish

Build over ice in a tall decorative glass. Garnish with skewered pineapple chunks.

Although this cocktail was meant to highlight or at the bare minimum incorporate the flavor of NUVO Sparkling Liqueur, instead it masks it to such a degree not a smidge of NUVO can be detected with its full one ounce addition to the drink.  However, the Italian Tropics is buttery-scotch delicious!  Conclusion:  Save the flat NUVO for a rainy day, but keep this cocktail for a sunny day on the deck or beach.

Nuevo NUVO – created by Cheri Loughlin

Nuevo NUVO – NUVO Sparkling Liqueur cocktail created by Cheri Loughlin - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin1-1/2 ounce Vodka

1 ounce flat NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

2 ounces Acai Juice with Raspberry

1/2 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

1/4 ounce Simple Syrup

Lemon Twist Garnish

The Nuevo NUVO renews the NUVO flavor to fabulous rich raspberry goodness.  Of course the enhancement is due to the Bossa Nova addition, but this brings out a hint of NUVO in the background of the cocktail.  That little hint maybe just what one needs to stir memories of the good times shared previously with NUVO friends.

To bring the bubbly back to the Nuevo NUVO try these options:

1-1/2 ounce club soda adds the right amount of bubbly effervescence without watering the cocktail down or contributing more alcohol.

1-1/2 ounce brut champagne will add more alcohol, but also more bubbles and cut a tad of the sweet while bringing its own grapevine twist to the cocktail.

1-1/2 ounce sparkling sake brings tingles to the cocktail with light zing that is distinctly dry yet satisfying without adding more sweetness.

NUVO Margarita – created by Cheri Loughlin

NUVO Margarita – NUVO Sparkling Liqueur cocktail created by Cheri Loughlin - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin2 ounces Tequila

1 ounce flat NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

3/4 ounce Homemade Sour

Lime Wheel for Garnish

Salted for glass rim optional

Salt rim of margarita or highball glass. Add liquids to cocktail shaker. Shake to blend. Strain into prepared glass over fresh ice. Garnish with lime wheel.

This is quite strong on tequila flavor with only a hint of NUVO.  Definitely not a drink for anyone who turns a nose up at tasting alcohol in their cocktail.  Adding lime and fruit juice to this mixture began mucking up the flavor drastically.  My reasoning behind this particular cocktail however happened to be the “manly” angle.  NUVO’s color is pink; not so masculine, yet consumed by many men if you happen to take a peek at NUVO Facebook photos.  As a female I often care for something a little edgier than the frill of pink in a cocktail.  Why not give NUVO consumers the best of both worlds; flavor packed NUVO.

Conclusion:Flat NUVO loses its flavor considerably.  Part of the thrill and bounce is in the tiny bubbles springing to the top of the glass.  Without the bubble all that remains is one dimensional pink liquid without much taste for the tongue to enjoy.  NUVO is available in a wide range of sizes to fit your personal to party needs.  Find the size that suits your mood and enjoy.

St. Patrick’s Day for the Tequila Minded: El Diamante del Cielo

Though widely celebrated, St. Patrick’s Day is not a nationally recognized holiday in the United States.  One would hardly discern this fact with all the fan fare that goes on from day break to last call, March 17, as busses roll into Irish pubs across the U.S. for “tours”.  This typically green holiday no longer remains for the Irish only.  Cocktail culture frequently pushes the limits of conventional holidays by continually fine-tuning, modifying and revamping the “norm” or ordinary into the exceptional.  Rather than the usual shot of Irish Whiskey, Irish Car Bomb or green beer this St. Patrick’s Day show your green spirit with these emerald hued 100% agave cocktails.

Cynar Artichoke Liqueur: Welcome Addition to Cocktails

Cynar is an Italian aperitif created from thirteen herbs and plants, artichoke being the most predominant. The color is reddish, dark brown and the flavoring is bittersweet. Like most aperitifs, Cynar may be served over ice or mixed in a cocktail with soda water and a citrus wedge. Europeans often consume Cynar with orange juice. However, Cynar is quite versatile as it may also be mixed with beer or champagne. My personal favorite is an occasional Negroni made with Cynar in place of the customarily called for Campari.

As is often the case with unusual types of liqueurs or aperitifs, the selection of available recipes is slim or difficult to find.  In searching the internet, site after site listed the same recipe over and over: Cynar Cocktail. With a flavor profile as unique as Cynar I knew there had to be a few over the top cocktail recipes out there. Time spent looking for recipes has been worth the effort.

Thistle

3 ounces Vodka

1 ounce Orange Juice

1/2 ounce Premium Orange Liqueur

1/2 ounce Cynar

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into chilled martini glass. No garnish called for, but fresh orange twist would be aromatically delightful in this one.

Cynar Breeze

1 ounce Cynar

3 ounces Vodka

1 ounce Grapefruit Juice

Fill highball glass two-thirds full with ice. Add ingredients in order given. Top with ice if needed. Again, no garnish called for, but grapefruit slice would go rather nicely in this refreshing cocktail. I would also decrease vodka to 1-1/2 ounce and increase the grapefruit juice.
