3/4 measure Coffee Liqueur

3/4 measure Irish Cream

3/4 measure Tuaca

1-1/2 measure Half & Half

3 scoops Vanilla Ice Cream

12 ounces Crushed Ice

Place all liquids and ice cream in blender. Add ice. Puree until completely smooth. Pour into decorative glass. No garnish needed with beautifully handcrafted Strawesome sipware in the glass.

Subtle coffee hint with lots of sweet vanilla shine through. Tuaca and Irish Cream add the ideal creamy sweetness to this summertime treat. July is National Ice Cream Month with July 23 as National Vanilla Ice Cream Day.

Make Mine a Manhattan Holiday

If you can’t make it to Manhattan for the holidays, bring Manhattan to a glass near you. Who would have thought there could be more than a handful of variations on the classic Manhattan recipe?  This tried and true favorite has been tweaked, pinched, played with and adapted in so many ways it becomes difficult to decipher where the classic begins and ends. With so many degrees in flavor preference and style, the base recipe sees adjustment with flavored liqueurs, juices and additional spirits.

The variations of Manhattan recipes below bring a wide variety of contrasting styles to the forefront while keeping to the thread of at least one thing in common; bourbon.  The first few closely match the classic Manhattan with call brands. After that the Manhattan gets a little more interesting.

2 ounces Woodford Reserve Bourbon

1 ounce Sweet Vermouth

1 dash Angostura Bitters

1 dash Peychaud’s Bitters

Splash of Cherry Juice

Bourbon Infused Cherry Garnish

Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir or shake according to preference until completely chilled. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with bourbon infused cherry.

2-1/2 ounces Knob Creek Bourbon

3/4 ounce Sweet Vermouth

Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir or shake according to preference until completely chilled. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with maraschino cherry.

The Maker’s Mark Manhattan

1-1/2 ounces Maker’s Mark Bourbon

1/2 ounce Carpano Antica Formula

1 teaspoon Maraschino Cherry Juice

Maraschino Cherry Garnish

Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir or shake according to preference until completely chilled. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with maraschino cherry.

2 ounces Woodford Reserve Bourbon

1 ounce Tuaca Liqueur

1/4 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

1/2 ounce Simple Syrup

Esquire Manhattan

2 ounces Woodford Reserve bourbon

1 ounce Cinzano Red Vermouth

2 dashes Angostura Bitters

1 dash Pernod 68 Absinthe

Lemon Peel Garnish

Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir until completely chilled. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with thin cut lemon peel over the top.

2 ounces Elmer T Lee Bourbon

1/2 ounce Sweet Vermouth

1/2 ounce Dry Vermouth

Splash Grand Marnier

Maraschino Cherry & Orange Zest Garnish

Place ice in martini glass. Add Grand Marnier. Swirl liqueur in glass to rinse and throw out. Place bourbon and vermouths in mixing glass with ice. Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir or shake according to preference until completely chilled. Strain into prepared martini glass. Garnish with maraschino cherry and fresh orange zest.

Rat Pack Manhattan

1-1/2 ounce Makers Mark Bourbon

1/2 ounce Sweet Vermouth

2 dashes of Bitters

Cherry Garnish

Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir or shake according to preference until completely chilled. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with cherry.

New Orleans Manhattan

1-1/2 ounce Bourbon

1/2 ounce Sweet Vermouth

1/2 ounce Frangelico

Cherry Garnish

Place ice in martini glass. Add Frangelico. Swirl liqueur in glass to rinse and throw out. Place bourbon and vermouth in mixing glass with ice. Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir or shake according to preference until completely chilled. Strain into prepared martini glass. Garnish with cherry.

Chambord Manhattan

2 ounces Bourbon

1 ounce Chambord

Dash of Bitters

Cherry Garnish

Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir or shake according to preference until completely chilled. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with cherry.

Dubonnet Manhattan

3/4 ounce Dubonnet Rouge

1-3/4 ounce Evan Williams Bourbon

1/4 ounce Dry Vermouth

3 dashes Angostura Bitters

Lemon Twist & Cherry Garnish

Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir or shake according to preference until completely chilled. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with lemon twist and cherry.

Beam Black Cherry Manhattan

2 ounces Jim Beam Bourbon

1 ounce Sweet Vermouth

1 ounce Dry Vermouth

Splash Grenadine

Cherry & Stuffed Olive Garnish

Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir or shake according to preference until completely chilled. Strain into chilled martini glass or serve over fresh ice in rocks glass. Garnish with skewered cherry and stuffed olive.

Fusion Manhattan

2 ounces X-Rated Fusion Liqueur

1 ounce Maker’s Mark Bourbon

2 dashes Bitters

Squeezed Cherry Garnish

Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until completely chilled. Strain into chilled martini glass. Squeeze cherry and drop into cocktail.

Knob Creek Cherry-infused Manhattan

Cherry-infused Knob Creek Bourbon

1/2 – 3/4 bottle Knob Creek Bourbon

1/2 quart jar Maraschino Cherries

Drain 3/4 of the maraschino cherry juice from the jar of cherries. Pour enough Knob Creek Bourbon into the jar to refill the jar. Put the lid on the jar and allow to set for two days.

Cherry-infused Knob Creek Bourbon Manhattan

1-1/4 ounce Cherry-infused Knob Creek Bourbon

1/4 ounce Sweet Vermouth

2 dashes Bitters

Cherry Garnish

Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir or shake according to preference until completely chilled. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with cherry.

1-1/2 ounce Bourbon

1/2 ounce Dry Vermouth

3 dashes Blue Curacao

3 dashes Angostura Bitters

2 ounces Red Stag by Jim Beam Infused Bourbon

Boulevard Manhattan

1-1/2 ounce Bourbon

1/4 ounce Grand Marnier

Modern Classic Cosmo Goes Italian

Put an Italian twist into your relaxing weekend the Italian way with a little amaretto twist to the modern classic Cosmopolitan cocktail.  This version weighs a slightly different flavor to the taste experience than the usual Sex and the City cocktail fair hued pink drink.  This version gives away the hint of almond immediately in aroma with medium flavor throughout.  Who knows there might be a little Cosmo in all of us after all…

Cabo Wabo Tequila Rocks National Tequila Day

In honor of National Tequila Day Cabo Wabo Tequila sent out three unique recipes to liven up celebrations.  The Waborita stays most true to traditional style Margarita recipes while The Churro Margarita and The Guacarita venture into territory some would speculate as adventurous beyond the margarita glass.

Licor 43, Carolans Irish Cream and Tuaca all remind of creamy, buttery, decadent deliciousness.  Add in the tequila with cinnamon and sugar rim and this cocktail certainly takes off into the realm of luscious dessert feel.

2 ounces Cabo Wabo Añejo Tequila

1 ounce Licor 43

1 ounce Carolans Irish Cream

1/4 ounce Tuaca

Mix of Cinnamon and Sugar for the rim

Shake up liquid ingredients with ice. Strain cocktail over fresh ice into a rocks glass, rimmed with the cinnamon sugar mixture.

If there were ever a Margarita to pair with favorite guacamole and chips snack food The Guacarita would definitely be the one.  Technically Avocado is a fruit rather than vegetable like so many people believe it to be, so enjoy your green fruit blended to rock & roll bliss in this unexpected Margarita recipe.

The Guacarita

2 ounces Cabo Wabo Blanco Tequila

1/2 Skinned Avocado

1/4 ounce Agave Nectar

1/2 ounce Fresh Lime Juice

4 Cilantro leaves

Place all ingredients and ice into a blender. Blend on high for 10 seconds and pour into a margarita glass. Garnish with a short cilantro sprig.

Tales of the Margarita

Simple Margarita - National Margarita Day - photo property Cheri LoughlinMany claim to be the inventor of the Margarita, but we’ll never be sure of its true origin. The most popular anecdote claims that Carlos “Danny” Herrera developed the drink at his Tijuana-area restaurant, Rancho La Gloria, around 1938. Herrera created the cocktail for one of his customers, a beautiful show girl, and aspiring actress, Marjorie King, who was allergic to all hard alcohol except than tequila. She didn’t enjoy tequila alone, so Herrera started to experiment with different combinations to make the beverage more palatable. The most delicious combination mixed white tequila with lime juice, shaved ice, triple sec and surprisingly, salt. Herrera named his concoction “Margarita” in honor of his muse, Marjorie. – quoted from PR material

The Waborita

1 ounce Fresh Lime Juice

1 ounce Cointreau

2 ounces Cabo Wabo Reposado Tequila

Splash of Grand Marnier

Salt the rim of a large margarita glass. Combine ingredients in a shaker over ice and strain into the glass. Serve with a lime wheel.  (This signature margarita is served at Sammy Hagar’s new Las Vegas Cabo Wabo Cantina)

World Cup Soccer Party Celebration Cocktails

World Cup celebrations roll around once every four years.  Become part of the festivities by throwing your own World Cup Soccer watch party.  Whether you are a soccer fan, inspired by the enthusiasm of worldwide sports competition and participation or just in on the action for fun and frivolity there is surely a team to cheer for while lifting a glass in spirited toast.

The sprinkling of recipes below represents a few of the nations competing along with a spirit choice from the respective countries.  Enjoy the zeal of competition while cheering for the home team!

England’s spirit of choice: Gin

Though the classic Collins contains no muddled fruit with garnish of cherry and orange slice only, this version adds a striking color and summertime fruit flavor for something unique.

6 Fresh Cherries (save 1 for garnish)

3 Fresh Blackberries

1-1/2 ounce Gin

3/4 ounce Simple Syrup

3/4 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

Club Soda

Gently muddle cherries and blackberries in bottom of mixing glass.  Add gin, simple syrup and lemon juice with ice.  Shake to blend and chill. Strain into tall glass.  Top with Club Soda.  Garnish with remaining fresh cherry.

Mexico’s spirit of choice: Tequila

Why be lured into the same Margarita fare where tequila is concerned?  It’s summer after all.  Venture from the usual.  Kick off the sandals with the Summer Vacation.

Summer Vacation – Good Spirits, A.J. Rathbun

1 ounce Silver Tequila

1 ounce Yellow Chartreuse

4 ounces Fresh Orange Juice

Orange Slice Garnish

Fill highball glass with ice.  Build drink over ice in order given.  Garnish with orange slice.

U.S.A. spirit of choice: Bourbon

Nothing says good ole U.S.A. like bourbon.  Sure, neat or on the rocks is definitely the way to go most days of the week, but live a little.  Show the world bourbon is as sophisticated as the next spirit.  Dress it with sweet seduction.

1/2 ounce Tuaca

Lemon Twist Garnish

Build over ice in a rocks glass.  Garnish with fresh lemon twist.  Stir gently.  Sip gracefully.  Notation: Original recipe in Good Spirits book calls for 3/4 ounce Tuaca.

France’s spirit of choice: Absinthe

When the score is tied at zero and you’re looking for your team to score, this is definitely the go to cocktail.  If nothing else, loaded with Absinthe it is definitely THE cocktail on the list to score points in the room for most defined flavor.

Zero Cocktail – Good Spirits, A.J. Rathbun

1-1/2 once Absinthe

1-1/4 ounce Fresh Orange Juice

1/4 ounce Grenadine

Fresh Cherry Garnish

Combine liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Strain into cocktail glass.  Garnish with fresh cherry.

Brazil’s spirit of choice: Cachaca

This Batida will allow you and your guests the freedom of choice.  Blender, ice and an assortment of fruit (fresh or frozen) will win you the trophy for best World Cup hostess.

4 ounces Sweetened Condensed milk

1 Cup Sliced Fruit (Fresh or Frozen)

Fruit Slice Garnish

Place all ingredients except garnish in blender with approximately 1-1/2 cups crushed ice.  Blend until smooth.  Add more ice if needed.  Garnish with slice of fruit.

Spain spirit of choice: Sherry

Coronation Cocktail No. 1

1-1/2 ounce Fino Sherry

1-1/2 ounce Dry Vermouth

1/4 ounce Maraschino Liqueur

2 dashes Orange Bitters

Orange Zest Twist

Combine all liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into cocktail glass.  Garnish with fresh orange zest twist.

Italy’s spirit of choice: Galliano

Every country needs winning spirit, so plan ahead with a champagne cocktail for that celebratory win.  Cheers!

Combine Galliano, raspberry liqueur and juices in cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to chill.  Strain into champagne flute.  Top with Brut Champagne.

90 Teaspoons Apricot Infused Manuka Honey

80 Drops Bitters

Blend quickly.  Serve in large wooden mugs.

The first thought might be to just top NUVO off with a bit of the bubbly for renewed freshness.  If that floats your boat, fine.  But this only waters NUVO down.  Begin building NUVO’s flavor profile back up with the basics: Gin, Rum, Vodka, and Tequila.

1 ounce flat NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

1/4 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

1/4 ounce Raspberry Liqueur

1-1/2 ounce Diet Tonic Water

Combine all liquids (except tonic water) in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to chill. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Top off with diet tonic water.

This is similar to a Gin & Tonic with an updated, straight-up twist.  NUVO lovers get their fizz back with the addition of the tonic water while keeping the pretty pink hue and flavor of the raspberry blossom.  The Rangpur Gin creates a fabulous base for gin fans and those who are just discovering this lovely spirit.  The Rangpur lime zing adds just enough splash to give NUVO & Rangpur the vitality it needs.

1/2 ounce Tuaca

2 ounces Pineapple Orange Juice

1 ounce flat NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

Pineapple Chunks for Garnish

Build over ice in a tall decorative glass. Garnish with skewered pineapple chunks.

Although this cocktail was meant to highlight or at the bare minimum incorporate the flavor of NUVO Sparkling Liqueur, instead it masks it to such a degree not a smidge of NUVO can be detected with its full one ounce addition to the drink.  However, the Italian Tropics is buttery-scotch delicious!  Conclusion:  Save the flat NUVO for a rainy day, but keep this cocktail for a sunny day on the deck or beach.

1 ounce flat NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

2 ounces Acai Juice with Raspberry

1/2 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

1/4 ounce Simple Syrup

Lemon Twist Garnish

The Nuevo NUVO renews the NUVO flavor to fabulous rich raspberry goodness.  Of course the enhancement is due to the Bossa Nova addition, but this brings out a hint of NUVO in the background of the cocktail.  That little hint maybe just what one needs to stir memories of the good times shared previously with NUVO friends. 

To bring the bubbly back to the Nuevo NUVO try these options:

1-1/2 ounce club soda adds the right amount of bubbly effervescence without watering the cocktail down or contributing more alcohol.

1-1/2 ounce brut champagne will add more alcohol, but also more bubbles and cut a tad of the sweet while bringing its own grapevine twist to the cocktail.

1-1/2 ounce sparkling sake brings tingles to the cocktail with light zing that is distinctly dry yet satisfying without adding more sweetness.

1 ounce flat NUVO Sparkling Liqueur

3/4 ounce Homemade Sour

Lime Wheel for Garnish

Salted for glass rim optional

Salt rim of margarita or highball glass. Add liquids to cocktail shaker. Shake to blend. Strain into prepared glass over fresh ice. Garnish with lime wheel.

This is quite strong on tequila flavor with only a hint of NUVO.  Definitely not a drink for anyone who turns a nose up at tasting alcohol in their cocktail.  Adding lime and fruit juice to this mixture began mucking up the flavor drastically.  My reasoning behind this particular cocktail however happened to be the “manly” angle.  NUVO’s color is pink; not so masculine, yet consumed by many men if you happen to take a peek at NUVO Facebook photos.  As a female I often care for something a little edgier than the frill of pink in a cocktail.  Why not give NUVO consumers the best of both worlds; flavor packed NUVO.

Conclusion:Flat NUVO loses its flavor considerably.  Part of the thrill and bounce is in the tiny bubbles springing to the top of the glass.  Without the bubble all that remains is one dimensional pink liquid without much taste for the tongue to enjoy.  NUVO is available in a wide range of sizes to fit your personal to party needs.  Find the size that suits your mood and enjoy.
