National Scotch Day Recipe Card

The work week doesn’t seem so long when liquor holidays keep popping up midweek. This week is no exception with National Scotch Day falling fortuitously on Wednesday; #WhiskyWednesday in the land of Twitter. Though many savor Scotch neat or occasionally on the rocks, Scotch served in cocktails is also a wonderful diversion from the usual. No matter how you enjoy your whisky, raise a glass in toast to National Scotch Day, July 27.

Must Try Classic Cocktail Alternatives

This Manhattan style cocktail contains definite flavor of dry vermouth spilling into the flavor palate. Would perhaps benefit by switching Heering Cherry Liqueur for Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur in my opinion as the Luxardo washes a bit too perfumy in this particular cocktail. Though the flavors meld together nicely the longer the drink sits in the glass. Cynar rather nice fit for this version. Might like hint more, but that is only due to my fascination with the artichoke spirit. Definite must try for bourbon enthusiasts and Manhattan cocktail lovers.

Bensonhurst is a cocktail descendent of the Brooklyn Cocktail which calls for Amer Picon, a rare liqueur. This original adaptation utilizes Cynar. Named for a tough Italian neighborhood in Brooklyn. The original Bensonhurst version below is created by Chad Solomon of Cuffs and Buttons.

Peek into the Peculiar

Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey is such an unusual find.  The aroma and taste meld together in an extraordinary contradiction of flavor personality.  Those who consume this artisanal spirit with regularity speak of it with enthusiasm that rivals that of cult followings.  It’s just that good, different or remarkable, depending on how one perceives it.  Possibly it is the story behind the beginning of the brand combined with the flavor.  No matter.  Stranahan’s built whiskey from the ground up and continues to produce whiskey enthusiasts search for with vigor and hold in high regard.

Aroma: Maraschino cherry with barely there vanilla.  Perfumed.  Cotton candy sugar-ish like the sweetened lip gloss teenage girls use to wet their lips with for a perfectly polished shine.

Flavor: This is where Stranahan’s becomes exceedingly interesting.  It’s the ‘POW’ factor – the ‘WOW’ factor – the ‘What the heck was that?!’ factor.  Simply stated; Juicy Fruit gum sweet in the front with a beer chaser in the finish.  This is a built in Colorado Car Bomb without all the mixers.  The flavor is so bizarre one sip will never do.  Stranahan’s finishes long and hearty with distinct notes of dark, robust beer head.  Uncanny.  Beyond unusual.  Think along the lines of Western; straw, grasses, saddle and wool with underlying cereal grain.

Maraschino Cherry Garnish if desired

Combine liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake or stir according to preference to chill. Strain into a small cocktail glass. Garnish with maraschino cherry if desired.

Ironically there is no cherry added to this concoction only the undertone of Stranahan’s itself, yet it flavors out distinctly cherry-ish with the ever present Stranahan ‘beer fizz’ on the back end.  Extremely peculiar in a rather captivating manner.

Whiskey Quotes & Cocktails

Whiskey spans the globe in a broad range of styles, flavors and varieties. No matter where the bottle pours it seems the preferred manner of consuming the spirit is neat or on the rocks. However the vast flavor profile of each individual whiskey creates a wealth of opportunity for cocktail sampling and springboard for new creations.

Celebrating Single

Move over couples. Singles have their day. It’s Singles Awareness Day; S.A.D. This singles only holiday is the alternative celebration to the ‘most romantic couples only’ holiday; Valentine’s Day. Some choose to observe Singles Awareness (or Appreciation) Day on Valentine’s Day, but the day after sounds like the perfect time for a Girl’s Night Out on the town to me. Cheers!

Gifting the Black Rose

Black Rose - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Though the black rose does not actually exist in nature, when given as gift the meaning is larger than life – pardon the pun. Symbolically the black rose means “death or farewell.” However, when paired with a lover’s holiday the Black Rose could take on new meaning beyond gloomy. A toast to burying the past with nod to hopeful beginnings is always a wonderful way to begin one’s finest hour or any Happy Hour – don’t you think? If nothing else, the Black Rose is sure fire way to begin a conversation.

Other forms of the Black Rose call for bourbon, grenadine splash and one bitters only served either on the rocks or without rocks in an Old Fashioned glass. Recipe source: Difford’s Guide book

Soul Kiss Cocktail for Lovers

The Soul Kiss Cocktail provides the perfect recipe for snuggle success.  This old style cocktail adds charm to cool evenings and cozy occasions with its dry vermouth and Dubonnet Rouge inclusion.  Rather than use Canadian Whiskey the original recipe called for I’ve substituted Tennessee Whiskey.  Soul Kiss Cocktail contains a wee amount of bitterness on the back end, but a tad more Dubonnet Rouge adjustment would fix that in a jiffy.  Take advantage of cooler temperatures and heat things up with a drink recipe embracing the essence of the season; Soul Kiss Cocktail.

Hollywood Classic Cocktails

Divorce is such an ugly ordeal, especially for the likes of a man like Charlie Chaplin who amassed a huge fortune back in the day when Hollywood was quieter and in its fledgling years. Chaplin’s second wife sued for divorce and courts froze the assets of his $16 million estate this day in history. Talk about needing a few cocktails from the Ex-Files!

Interestingly one of Charlie Chaplin’s most notable characters is that of The Tramp which debuted in the 1914 motion picture, Mabel’s Strange Predicament. The film starred Mabel Normand as an elegant lady and Charlie as the convincing often drunk Tramp.  Mabel and The Tramp first meet in a hotel lobby.  An infamous scene is that of Mabel hiding beneath the bed of another in said hotel… The plot thickens.

Most Tempting Cocktail

Temptation is that dreadful juxtaposition of honor colliding with willful desire.  It is deep, penetrating, indulgence coinciding with the mind numbing knowledge that enticement is mere steps from utter catastrophe and sheer delight.  However, share tempting pleasures with those you treasure and the outcome just might offer welcome appeal. Contemplate Temptation carefully.

A Wicked Sip

The Serpent’s Tooth cocktail is best served to those slippery devils with sharp tongue and wicked spirit.  It is best savored with sordid tales of misdeeds and misconduct of the devious sort.  Serpent’s Tooth is sure to stir the spirit, sate the soul and mislead the faint of heart. Tread carefully.
