The South Pacific drink recipe is a tropical variation on the Salty Dog. The Salty Dog is traditionally made with vodka and grapefruit juice. The South Pacific recipe brings in a little more sweetness by using ruby red grapefruit juice and a kiss of passion fruit juice. Peach bitters are optional. I think they add a touch of depth to the drink. If peach bitters are difficult to find in your area, don’t sweat the small stuff. Try the South Pacific drink recipe without bitters or substitute orange bitters if that floats your boat.

I originally named this drink Old Salt as a tie in to rum, sailing the open seas and the sea dogs who passionately told stories of treasure, pirates and loose women. Then I decided ask for a little naming advice from friends. There were many great ideas. Have a look for yourself. South Pacific was recommended by Jennifer Simpkins. I think it really fits, especially with the beautiful blue water filtered behind the drink. Thank you Jennifer and everyone who contributed to naming this drink!

South Pacific Drink Recipe

South Pacific – recipe by Cheri Loughlin

1-1/2 ounce Silver Rum

3 ounces Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice

1 ounce Passion Fruit Juice

2 dashes Peach Bitters – optional

Sea Salt & Lime for Salted Rim

Rim highball glass with lime. Dip rim in salt. Fill with ice. Build drink in order given. Add dashes of peach bitters if desired.
