How many calories are in a glass of wine? How many ounces are in a typical serving? The answers depend upon the wine, which person or agency you ask and who is doing the pouring.
Some authorities suggest a wine serving size is 4 ounces. Others say 5 ounces. The standard size bottle of wine is 750ml or approximately 25.36 ounces. If we approximate 4 servings in a bottle, a serving size is a little over 5-1/2 ounces. If the standard serving size is 4 ounces then there are 6-1/3 servings of wine per standard 750ml bottle. So approximating the number of calories in a serving of wine can never truly be standard.
It makes more sense to know how many calories per ounce in wine rather than in an entire glass of wine. If you know how many ounces of wine you pour into your typical glass any given evening, the handy infographic wine calorie charts below will help you calculate how many calories are in your glass of wine.
White Wine Calories
White wines typically contain about 22 to 25 calories per ounce. Exceptions to the rule are late harvest white wines which contain anywhere from 33 to 45 calories per ounce.
Red Wine Calories
Red wines typically contain about 22 to 26 calories per ounce. Exceptions to the rule are dessert wines and sweet vermouths which contain about 47 calories per ounce.
These calories per ounce are averages since exact numbers will vary slightly by brand. These numbers were sourced from the United States Department of Agriculture. Their fact sheets list wine serving sizes in 5-ounce increments.
