Oatmeal Cookie Day Cocktail & Shots

Oatmeal Raisin Cookie 024 photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

March 18 is National Lacy Oatmeal Cookie Day, sometimes identified with National Oatmeal Cookie Day which is actually April 30. The difference between the two; a lacy oatmeal cookie is delicate, wafer thin and crispy while the oatmeal cookie is a drop cookie that is chewy, chunky and usually full of nuts, spices and some sort of chewy dried fruit such as raisins. Regardless of which style of cookie you prefer, I offer a toast in honor of the day.

Oh, and I made real cookies, too! [Date Night Oatmeal Cookies] They are one of my favorites after all.

Much like a spiced up oatmeal cookie, this little shot contains lots of spicy cinnamon flavor with delicious creamy texture.

How sweet (and buttery) it is! This oatmeal cookie could get dangerous real fast. It’s like a buttery cookie, less spicy and a bit sweeter than the version above and yes… Very Good!

Cinnamon Toast

This tastes a bit like buttered cinnamon toast. Apple is quite faint, but just tickles the senses enough to give fresh baked apple pie crust sensation. Like pie crust sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Optional cinnamon and sugar rim dresses this cocktail for holiday celebrations.

Oatmeal Cookie Cocktail & Shot

The Oatmeal Cookie Cocktail; it was not just a shooter to be slammed back, barely tasted for split second indulgence. One could actually sip and savor, allow it to linger on the tongue, taste the complexities and hypothesize whether it indeed tasted like the baked oatmeal cookie treat. Time for you to decide…Zabdara Cookie Cocktail Top Shot - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Night of Passion Cocktails

Every holiday serves a purpose. Many daily holidays are wink and nod as ‘reason’ to indulge in specific spirited choices served as straight pour or swirled in a cocktail glass. Other holidays tipple at the senses as occasions for gift giving times such as birthdays and Christmas. There are others still that cause great division of thought as to whether the holiday serves the world of commerce or the passion of the people. Valentine’s Day is one such holiday.

The cynical view of this puffy red hearted holiday is love is completely lost in the commercial gift swapping event for underlying motives of what men and women really want. Valentine’s Day isn’t about jewelry, chocolates, flowers or cocktails for that matter. When all is said and done, Valentine’s Day comes down to the love and sex factor.Love a cocktail at CWC - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Conjuring Up Halloween Shots

Four Halloween Shots - photo property of Cheri Loughlin - The Intoxicologist

For some the most wonderful time of the year begins with the sprinkling of snow and pretty packages wrapped with sparkly ribbon.  For others the real magic begins earlier with the weaving of witchcraft, telling spine tingling stories in the dead of night and sipping ghoulish delights from bubbling cauldrons teeming with mysterious potions.  There’s no need to rely on a wicked witch (or bartender for that matter) to stir up batches of bizarre brew for your night of mischief.  Look into the crystal ball of spirited Halloween shots and pick your poison.  Please remember a little black magic goes a long way, so please sip responsibly.

The Grim Reaper knocks at the door to steal your soul and leaves a bloodied mess of skeletal remains.  Within this nightmarish tragedy of rattling bones lies a chaotic swell of Bloodied Brains.

Don’t let a little innocence fool you.  This rebellious little phantom charms its way into the pleasure zone with its mix of tequila and chocolate then gives off a vaporously naughty bite with a hint of Absinthe.  You might find yourself sipping and savoring rather than shooting this ghostly teaser all at once.

Dessert Inspired Holiday Shot Recipes

Four Holiday Dessert Shots photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Several options arise for those in the mood for dessert during the holidays yet either don’t want to take the time for baking or prefer tempting libations within itty bitty glasses.  You may have seen the mini desserts contained within shot style glasses popping up at restaurants in the last few years.  Why bother with little custards, puddings and cakes inspired by shots and shooters?  Go for the original creations that inspired the dessert revolution.

What are fall, Thanksgiving and family for the holidays without the tasty goodness of apple pie?  Sure, it’s usually piping hot out of the oven with the warming aroma to lure one into the kitchen, but this one takes a little less time to prepare with less mess and still packs on a great crust around the edges.  *wink wink* Yeah, it was worth a shot.  I can’t see mom in the kitchen swigging this back either, but one just never knows…

You’ve heard the warning before – ‘don’t try this at home.’  I’m telling you ‘try this at home’ … the layering part that is.  I don’t care which shot you try to layer.  Pick one.  Pick a favorite from a recipe book or another website.  Just do it!  Heaviest spirits go on the bottom, lightest spirits toward the top.  I tried this at home and I was stoked that it actually worked!  The trick is slowly slipping the liqueurs over the back of a spoon into the shot glass rather than just pouring them into the glass atop each other.  Give it a whirl.  It’s pretty cool!

Layer Cake proves not every layered shot will turn out as planned.  Difficult to notice from the photo, but this layered shot was not as easy to build as the previous layered shot.  Lesson learned; they won’t all turn out perfect.  But if measured correctly, the flavor will remain the same throughout.  The difference is most likely shot glass or the weight difference between

Amaretto and Apricot Brandy since those were the only two variables between Layer Cake and Chocolate Amaretto Soufflé.  Amazing how different one ingredient makes in taste, texture and look.

Layer chilled ingredients in a shot glass.  Ingredients layer easier when applied over the back of a bar spoon or ordinary table spoon.

As is important with any shot I can think of offhand, one of the most important features is make sure the ingredients are cold.  Many shots play on the ability to mess a person up quickly as may be exemplified by listening to two women approach the bar Friday evening and say this to the bartender, “Give us two of your strongest shots.”  They didn’t ask for a particular flavor, sweet, sour or base spirit.  The intent was to just get hammered or gain a little liquid courage.  Maybe a thump on the head would suffice since they obviously didn’t care what they might gulp down in the glass.  There are some tasty shots out there.  Find a few you like.  Remember how to make them and order those when you’re feeling like a celebration shot to start or end the evening.  Knowledge is empowerment even in the realm of shots.  They might be going down fast, but make sure they have a little flavor.
