Moon River

Many Girls Night In evenings begin with popcorn, favorite movie and of course, cocktails. When it’s time to settle in for an indulgent evening full of movies, it’s time to bring out the classics. Many film stars from way back when have cocktails named in their honor, but there is also the flip side of movies with namesake cocktails. Audrey Hepburn made the movie sing, but remember the music from Breakfast at Tiffany’s?

Classics Take to the Punch Bowl

The original Hurricane was created at Pat O’Brien’s in New Orleans out of necessity during World War II when rum was abundant and other liquors were in short supply. If bar owners wanted to purchase whiskey which was a high demand/short supply commodity, liquor salesmen would require bulk purchase of lower demand/high supply spirits such as rum. The recipe for the Hurricane evolved due to an effort to keep the stockpile of rum flowing out of the bar enabling a supply of whiskey to keep flowing in.

Bacardi Hurricane - Low Calorie Cocktail - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinHurricane
1 ounce Dark Rum
1 ounce Light Rum
1/2 ounce Galliano
3/4 ounce Fresh Lime Juice
2 ounce Passion Fruit Nectar or Passion Fruit Syrup
2 ounce Fresh Orange Juice
2 ounce Pineapple Juice
1 ounce Simple Syrup
Dash of Angostura Bitters
Orange Wheel, Lime Wheel & Pineapple Chunk Garnish

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend. Strain into hurricane glass over fresh ice. Garnish with skewered fruits. Notation: The Hurricane is not named for the seasonal weather of New Orleans. The cocktail is served in a glass that mimics the shape of a hurricane lamp. Thus it is named due to the curvaceous glass.

The original Hurricane of New Orleans offers much more for those who look to quench the thirst of the masses. Club 360 of New Orleans modified the classic cocktail into a punch style recipe for easier serve.

24 ounces Pineapple Juice
24 ounces Orange Juice
8 ounces Light Rum
8 ounces Grenadine
8 ounces Dark Rum, preferably Myers’s
Orange Wheels & Maraschino Cherries Garnish

Combine liquids in large pitcher or container. Stir. Refrigerate at least two hours. Stir before serving. Fill old fashioned glasses with ice. Fill. Garnish with skewered fruit. Notation: Club 360 omits the dark rum as liquids are mixed and refrigerated, saving it as a float on top of the cocktail as it is served. Mix and serve as you prefer.

Ring in New Year with Italian Elegance

Champagne toasts abound this time of year.  Though a bit of bubbly lilts over the tongue rather nicely without the need of accompaniment, it’s always delicious to flavor the season with the essence of luxury. Ring in New Year celebrations with a splash of Italian elegance using the rich flavor of Galliano in your glass.

Quick & Easy Drink Pairings for Football Weekend

Another week comes to a close and the words rolling off the tongue are thank goodness there’s football!  Better yet there are many complementary drink recipes already on the books that go hand in hand with many football teams.  It’s just a matter of finding them for clever match-ups.

Houston Texans fans might be pleased to find the Texsun cocktail served martini style with minimal ingredients. This clever cocktail includes bourbon and dry vermouth. Serve this on the rocks for easier tailgate preparation if you prefer.

Texsun paired with football team Houston Texans - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinTexsun – Difford’s Guide #7

1-1/2 parts Bourbon

1-1/2 parts Dry Vermouth

1-1/2 part Pink Grapefruit Juice

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Dallas Cowboys fans also get a taste of bourbon, but this time mixed with a little dark rum.  The Midnight Cowboy is a darker spirited cocktail with warmer tones.  Though it is traditionally served martini style it would make an excellent long drink served on the rocks.  Better still, place 2 to 3 ounces of espresso in a tall glass on the rocks and add the remaining ingredients for a terrific early morning eye opening tailgate drink. Please keep in mind football and tailgating can be an all day event, so please consume responsibly.

2 parts Bourbon

1 part Dark Rum

1/2 part Half & Half or Heavy Whipping Cream

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake thoroughly.  Strain into a cocktail glass. Notation: There is no sugar in this cocktail. If your preference is a little sweet, add a wee amount of simple syrup to taste.

There is a shot by the name of Panther just waiting patiently for Carolina Panthers fans. Unfortunately this particular shot does not carry the same team colors, but perhaps will sip as slyly as a panther instead.

1 part Peach Brandy

1 part White Crème de Menthe

Place liquids in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into a shot or shooter glass.

The St. Louis Rams should plan on shaking things up on the field this weekend. Fans should cheer them on with the Battering Ram.  This long drink contains a few more ingredients than the previous recipes, but definitely provides long sipping satisfaction.  Battering Ram leans a little toward sweet, so hold off on the sweet and sour mix until last and add it in according to taste preference for sweet factor.

Orange Slice Garnish

Combine all liquid ingredients except tonic water in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a highball glass filled half with ice.  Top with tonic water.  Garnish with orange slice.

Milkshakes go back as a personal favorite since childhood, so the Brown Cow recipe was a no brainer for inclusion in football favorites.  A little tweak of the recipe and use of Kahlua Especial turns this classic into something special for Cleveland Browns fans.

Combine Kahlua, milk and half & half in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend. Strain into Hurricane glass over fresh ice. Drizzle chocolate syrup over top.

The Jaguar contains the deeply rich flavor of Galliano blended with velvety ice cream for a lovely concoction for Jacksonville Jaguars fans. Winter chill might be settling in, but it’s really never too cold for a temptingly delicious ice cream treat.

San Francisco 49ers fans already know their team is named in honor of miners who headed west in a quest for gold. It’s appropriate to drive the team spirit home with a golden cocktail that takes little preparation so more time can be spent watching the game.  Golden Nail is a nice and easy smooth sipper.

Tweaking Popular Cocktails for Halloween Menus

Toiling in Trouble Sour - Amaretto Sour adaption - photo property of Cheri Loughlin

When planning the drinks you’ll serve for Halloween parties keep in mind the type of cocktails you and your guests usually consume.  Use those drink recipes as the basis for your cocktail inspiration.  After all, the plethora of Halloween cocktails with clever names, creepy garnishes and bubbling froth will be more miss than hit if the flavor aspect is lost on you and your guests.  Popular drink recipes can be adapted to suit the spooky season without the fear factor.

Shivering Sour Halloween Drink adapted from Midori Sour - photo property of Cheri LoughlinShivering Sour – adapted by Cheri Loughlin from the Midori Sour

1 ounce Melon Liqueur

1 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

1/2 ounce Fresh Lime Juice

1/2 ounce Simple Syrup

1/4 ounce Sloe Gin

Combine melon liqueur, citrus juices and simple syrup in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into rocks glass over fresh ice. Float Sloe Gin on top for creepy effect.

One of the first long drinks I fell in love with at the bar, figuratively and literally, was the Grateful Dead.  The version I liked without Sprite topper is long gone along with the bartender who tweaked the recipe to my liking.  There are as many variations to the Grateful Dead as there are bars in any given town.  This adaptation relies on a kick of spice with the inclusion of spiced rum and Drambuie.  If you’d like to add just a hint more flavor, use a good reposado tequila as well.

Grateful Dead Halloween Drink - photo property of Cheri LoughlinGrateful Dead – adapted by Cheri Loughlin

1/2 ounce Tequila

1/2 ounce Vodka

1/2 ounce Spiced Rum

1/2 ounce Gin

3/4 ounce Raspberry Liqueur

1/4 ounce Drambuie

1/2 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice

1/2 ounce Fresh Lime Juice

1/2 ounce Simple Syrup

1 ounce Club Soda

Combine all ingredients except club soda in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend. Strain into Collins glass over fresh ice. Top with club soda. Stir. Garnish with lemon wedge and maraschino cherries if desired.  Notation: This can be made ahead and multiplied for a party pitcher drink, too.

Fantasma is the feminine gender noun for ghost in Italian. Since Galliano is the primary flavor outside of orange in the classic Harvey Wallbanger drink it’s appropriate to rely on the Italian heritage to rename the cocktail for the season.  This recipe is my version of the classic Harvey Wallbanger. Many Harvey Wallbanger recipes call for 2 ounces vodka, 6 ounces orange juice and 1/4 ounce Galliano float.  Vodka adds little to the flavor of orange juice.  It seems rather unfair to add a mere splash of Galliano to such a tall drink, so shortening the drink and going long on spirited flavor is just the right ticket to detail in this rendition in my opinion.

Screaming Fantasma - Harvey Wallbanger adaption - photo property of Cheri LoughlinScreaming Fantasma – adapted by Cheri Loughlin from the classic Harvey Wallbanger

1-1/2 ounce Vodka

4 ounces Orange Juice

3/4 ounce Galliano

Place ice in a highball glass. Add vodka and orange juice. Stir. Float Galliano on top. Notation: Ordinary vodka can also be exchanged for citrus or orange flavored vodkas to give the base Screwdriver drink or Harvey Wallbanger added oomph.

The Amaretto Sour tops many people’s list as a popular favorite.  Yet this particular drink easily goes too sweet too fast or zings into the dark side of pucker up lemony sour in no time flat.  Rather than mixing straight amaretto and lemon juice with a cross your fingers and hope for the best wicked smile, take the time to mellow out the drink with a couple of additional add-ins.  Rum smoothes the sour out a bit while orange juice gives a wee burst of healthy citrus flavor shine.

England’s spirit of choice: Gin

For the Love of Football

Tailgating during football season is almost as American as apple pie and hot dogs.  Tailgate parties set up in parking lots and grassy areas of game day venues have become as popular if not more so as gathering in front of the big screen TV for the big game.  The spirit of tailgating in America has become tradition and has spread to more sporting events than just football.

Beyond tailgating is the good old fashioned way of enjoying the great American sport of football; at home in the presence of friends cheering on your team and calling the referee out for plays they called wrong.  We never get our two cents in where the play calls lead, but we can call the shots where the drink recipes are concerned.  That is where The Intoxicologist gives you the opportunity to decide the best drink recipe for your game of choice whether tailgating or watching the game on the big screen.

When the game just isn’t going your way it’s Aggravation all the way.

It doesn’t matter how much you yell and shout at the screen or profess the ‘would of, could of done its’ to your tailgating buds.  The real brave souls are the ones on the field lined up toe to toe on the front line.  So a toast to them; a Brave Bull.

Top 10 Classic Cocktails

In honor of The Late Show with David Letterman’s premier on CBS on August 30, 1993, The Intoxicologist site has chosen to run down a list of Top 10 Classic Cocktails as chosen by participants of a question asked on Twitter several weeks ago.  The question was simple: What are your top 10 favorite classic cocktails?  The answers below are the classic cocktail recipes that popped up in the Q&A discussion that 21 Must Try Classic Cocktail Recipes did not already cover.  Sample a few and see what you may be missing.

The name sounds quite appropriate for a rainy day as does the color of this particular mixed drink.  However the flavor is not ‘easy, breezy, laid back’ in my opinion.  It is however pleasant.  Ginger beer packs a small wallop with its ginger kick and bubbly fizz.  The tingly effect definitely keeps one from drifting off into cozy slumber on a rainy afternoon.  Dark & Stormy is a great drink for an afternoon round at the pub if beer is not your thing.  It is also a great refreshing mixed drink that is quick and easy to whip up on a warm afternoon.

Build over ice in a high ball glass.  Garnish with cucumber spear and green apple slice.

Some like full on absinthe in their Sazerac for bursting with flavor anise feel.  My preference follows the more subtle feel.  The recipe below gives the full amount of Pernod measurement but my choice was to use it as a wash in the glass.  If you prefer a little less sweet, go for the 1/4 ounce Simple Syrup.  You can always go back to add more in later.  The Sazerac is a New Orleans classic cocktail staple.  Sazerac Rye is traditional for use in this cocktail, however mine was built with (r1) Straight Rye Whiskey.  It is what was on hand and honestly, it tastes rather delicious!

Sazerac

2 ounces Rye Whiskey

1/4 to 1/2 ounce Simple Syrup

5 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters

2 dashes Angostura Bitters

1/4 ounce Absinthe

Lemon Twist Garnish

Pack a rocks glass with crushed ice.  Lace Pernod around outer edge of glass containing crushed ice.  Set aside.  Combine Rye Whiskey, simple syrup and bitters in a mixing glass with ice.  Shake to chill.  Toss Pernod laced ice out of chilled glass.  Strain contents of mixing glass into chilled rocks glass.  Zest fresh lemon twist over glass and garnish.

According to the Bols Genever website The Holland House classic cocktail was the signature drink of the Holland House cocktail bar in New York.  Harry Craddock, most notable for is bartending days at the Savoy Hotel in London, once worked at the Holland House.  This cocktail comes across a bit strong with the lemon, possibly a little tart or sharp.  It is a favorite among many and being revived with the ‘newer’ styles of gin on the market that are less biting with their juniper tones and more rounded out with mellowing delicateness in the flavor.

Don the Beachcomber was a shrewd businessman who kept his drink recipes close to the chest without sharing them definitively with anyone.  For this simple reason his famous cocktails have been duplicated by bartenders worldwide, but none can claim to be the ‘original’ recipe.  There are many variations to the Zombie.  The recipe below is one that doesn’t come from a mix and is easier to assemble with ingredients one can find in relatively any market.   However, do check out the recipe Dale DeGroff puts together in his book, The Essential Cocktail.
