Puerto Rican Rum with Natural Passionfruit Flavors

60 Proof / 30% alcohol

Suggested Retail Price: $12 to $15 range

Availability: United States offices opened in June 2009 with the purpose of increasing availability to all fifty states. DonQ Pasion Rum has limited availability in US at this time.

Tasting Notes

Color: Mostly clear with just barely there tinge of ecru w/ very light peach. Not perfectly clear.

Aroma: Detect a bit of alcohol on the nose, but no burn. Passionfruit inclusion is barely there if at all. Fruit is extremely faint.

Tasted Neat: Light sweetness. Toasted type sweetness. Burn. Passionfruit is again very light. I do like the unusual sweetness with its mix of burnt sugar, roasted fruit feel. More fruit comes through in third to fourth sip. Not liking the after taste neat, but this is not a flavor that is meant to be sipped neat. It’s meant to be paired with favorite mixers.

Mouth Feel: Upper end of light.

Possible Uses, Pairings and / or Cocktails: Variation on classic Cosmo comes to mind first, using  Passionfruit Rum version. Might also go well with orange juice with squeeze of lemon. Possibly Sprite topper.

Puerto Rican Rum Infused with Natural Mint

40 Proof / 20% alcohol

Suggested Retail Price: $12 to $15 range

Availability: United States offices opened in June 2009 with the purpose of increasing availability to all fifty states.

Tasting Notes

Color: Clear

Aroma: Light mint. No burn. Like Rigley’s Spearmint Gum aroma-wise.

Tasted Neat: Sweet with rush of sour almost immediately. Sweet to sour as in a sweet tart kind of way. Made my mouth water. Mint flows through nicely. Warming at back of throat. Perhaps tartness is hint of lime. Comes across as soft yet tart apple.

Mouth Feel: Lower end of medium. Not too thick even with the sweetness. Not too thin either.

Possible Uses, Pairings and / or Cocktails: Could possibly top with plain club soda and add a hint of extra simple syrup to sweeten the deal. More mint is always good. Betting this would be great in lemonade with splash of 7-UP or Sprite.

It would be fascinating to see the infusion process of natural fruit and/or herbs since the mint works so well with this one.

Review: DonQ Limon Rum

The versatility of vodka usually translates well as blank canvas for creating cocktails. Vodkas do vary in taste and viscosity, but they usually remain true to the “colorless, odorless, tasteless” description attached to them. This is ideal for crisp clean martinis and cocktails, but sometimes a little more depth and roll of the tongue lushness is desired when mixing and tasting. This is where it could be beneficial to substitute rum for vodka in some cocktails. This exchange also renders well when mixing with flavored vodkas and rums. If you’re a rum person but the recipe calls for vodka, change it up for experimental purposes.

DonQ Limon Rum Tasting Notes

DonQ Limon Rum Tasting - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin30% Alcohol. 60 Proof.

Aroma: Lemony, but not the waxy “lemon Pledge” sort of scent that can often be attributed to some lemon vodkas, rums and lemoncellos. What you will find here is something closer to fresh, clean lemon feel without any biting, astringent edge.

Taste: Lemon with orange back. Hint of peel. Some sweetness. A little bite on the back end when sampled neat, but completely inoffensive.

It seems DonQ Limon would mix well with simple mixers such as sweet tea, watermelon juice, club soda with splash of simple syrup or even Sprite or 7-UP served on the rocks. However it also blends rather creatively with other mixers when taken a few steps further.

3/4 measure Ginger Liqueur

1/2 measure Lemon Juice

Egg White

3 dashes Angostura Bitters

Lemon Slice Garnish

Combine egg and liquids except bitters in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake thoroughly until frothy. Strain into rocks glass over fresh ice. Add bitters to the top. Garnish with lemon slice.

Omit the egg white if it really turns you off, but don’t leave the party without sampling this version of the traditional Sour. It’s summery, light, airy and difficult to put down once the first sip washes across the palate. Simply divine.

Summertime Cover Up

DonQ Coco Rum Tasting Notes

21% Alcohol. 42 Proof.

Aroma: Very little scent. Sugared.

Taste: Very sweet. Says natural coconut flavors on the bottle, but… tastes more artificially flavored to the taste buds. Even leaves bit of distasteful after taste. Thin. Not nearly as impressed with this flavoring as I have been with the base spirits of the DonQ Rum brand thus far.

Best conclusion for this flavoring; mix to get semblance of sweetened flavoring
while knowing the alcohol content might be exceedingly low. Borders upon liqueur factor at this point in my opinion. Many average liqueurs fall within 15 to 30 percent ABV (alcohol by volume). Rum, even flavored rum, generally speaking falls somewhere between 35 to 40 percent ABV with some higher.

Summertime means quick and easy cocktails that won’t bring on the buzz too fast. Throw on your favorite bikini and simply shake up this simple tropical Cover Up for easy, breezy sipping poolside.

Going for Gold

DonQ Gold Rum Tasting Notes

40% alcohol. 80 proof.

DonQ Gold Rum Tears with Notes photo copyright Cheri LoughlinStraw color to gold. Reminds me of hay rides in warm fall weather. Very pleasant.

Aroma: Tad sharper on the nose than DonQ Anejo Rum. More relaxed sugar cane than molasses. Vanilla notes soften the sugar.

Taste: Also thinner than the Anejo. Much more burn. Vanilla bean more pronounced. A bit of alcohol hotness. Slight banana note with citrus peel.

Rum Runner long drink seems natural progression for the feel of DonQ Gold. The Rum Runner is also a fairly easy way to lose track of an evening rather quickly. Sip slowly.

Rum Runner – adapted by Cheri Loughlin

1/2 ounce Blackberry Brandy

1/2 ounce Crème de Banana

1/2 ounce Pineapple Juice

1/2 ounce Orange Juice

1/4 ounce Anejo Rum

Orange & Pineapple Slice, Maraschino Cherry Garnish – optional

Combine all liquids except anejo rum in shaker with ice. Shake to blend. Strain into large rocks glass or tall glass over fresh ice. Garnish with fruit if desired. Float Anejo Rum on top.

Tropical, sweet. Banana comes through primary. Would be terrific blended with ice. Might even be great with coconut cream. If optional garnish is used be sure to take the time to allow the fruit to marinate in the cocktail before eating. It’s delicious that way!

Shaking Up the Anejo Category

DonQ Anejo Rum Tasted Neat with Notes - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Aged or Anejo usually brings to mind sipping spirits rather than mixing spirits. In the case of anejo rum it might also be used as a floater for added flavor depth on top of a cocktail. Rarely do I grab anejo spirits to mix a drink. It’s a shame really. Rather than pigeon-hole a flavor packed anejo rum into the sipper only category, it’s high time I started shaking it up.

DonQ Anejo Rum Tasting Notes

DonQ Anejo Rum Tasted Neat - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin40% Alcohol. 80 proof. Beautiful color.

Aroma: Orange citrus. Molasses.

Taste: Burn. Thinner feel than legs on the glass allude to. Wonderful warmth as the liquid descends down the back of the throat. Bit more molasses and brown sugar flavor without too much sweetness follow through. Tiniest notes of toasted nut. Mocha. Faint chocolate with tad of bitter coffee bean.  Definitely see DonQ Anejo going terrifically with a small splash of Grand Marnier warmed by the fire. Ironically there is already a cocktail for that!

The only glitch with this rum is the pour spout. From the few bottles of DonQ Rum I’ve opened so far, the Anejo is the only one that has the tamper proof pour spout. These spouts just make pouring a little more difficult since sometimes the liquid doesn’t flow and then suddenly gushes. A little frustrating, but the rum makes up for it in flavor.

Batiste Cocktail with Wine Caraffe photo copyright Cheri LoughlinBatiste

2 ounces Anejo Rum

3/4 ounce Grand Marnier

Combine liquids in mixing glass with ice. Stir to chill. Strain into chilled cocktail glass.

Batiste contains amazing color! Deep, rich flavor. Hint of sweet rather than sticky sugar. Retains value of the rum notes. Great chilled for happy hour, but would also serve lovely as an after dinner cocktail sipped fireside. Brings out chocolate orange and coffee notes with much more burnt brown sugar and molasses. Another terrific feature of the Batiste; it’s an easy two ingredient cocktail.

Original Batiste recipe calls for Light Rum and calls for 1 ounce Grand Marnier. If you prefer even less sweet, cut the Grand Marnier back to 1/2 ounce. It still tastes fab!

DonQ Rum Shakes Up Smooth Classic Cocktail

DonQ Cristal Rum Tasted Neat photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

DonQ Cristal Rum Tasting

Aroma: Upon opening the bottle an immediate sharp alcohol scent. After pouring in tasting glass allowing to sit a moment, the initial aroma dissipates. Vanilla, chocolate/mocha appear. Crystal clear.

Taste: Burn on the tongue tasted neat, but not astringently so. Definite notes of mocha leaning more toward coffee expressions. Slight drying in back of throat. Is quite nice sipped on the rocks with orange twist.

Boadas Cocktail

Boadas Classic Cocktail with DonQ Cristal Rum Tasting photo copyright Cheri Loughlin1 ounce White Rum

1 ounce Dubonnet Rouge

1 ounce Orange Curacao

Maraschino Cherry Garnish

Place liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Stir to chill. Strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with skewered maraschino cherries.

Lovely. Simple, flavorful cocktail. Dubonnet Rouge picks up hints of chocolate/coffee in the DonQ Cristal. Sweet cocktail, but not overly so. Dubonnet gives the wash of pleasantry to balance the sweetness. This cocktail would perhaps benefit by substituting Grand Marnier in exchange for the Orange Curacao. Grand Marnier would play well with its delightful hints of orange and chocolate. However, the Boadas Cocktail is a classic and fabulous exactly as is. Usually sample cocktails are a dime a dozen with a sip and toss thought behind each as the review process proceeds. However, this cocktail recipe is a definite keeper as is DonQ Cristal for on the rocks pour and shake ‘em up fun.
