Sampling the Irish Spirit

St. Patrick’s Day reaches beyond green beer and Jello shots. There is even more to it than Irish Car Bombs and pints of Guinness backed by mandatory rounds of Irish Whiskey. There are bars offering Irish Whiskey tasting flights and those serving Irish themed cocktails for those interested in more than the stop and go shots. Venture beyond the ordinary while celebrating the holiday. Take the opportunity to sample something new.

1 ounce Irish Whiskey

1 ounce Blended Scotch

1/2 ounce Dry Vermouth

1/2 ounce Sweet Vermouth

Dash Peychaud’s Bitters

Orange Twist Garnish

Combine liquids in mixing glass with ice. Stir to chill. Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with orange twist.

Perfect vermouth combination arrives across the lips first and then suddenly the smokiness and warming of the whiskies shine through. Bitters add hint of spice in the tail end. Some dark spirited cocktails can land heavily on the palate, but this one glides easily across the tongue.

Dublin 8 - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinDublin 8

2 ounces Irish Whiskey

2 ounces Orange Juice

2 ounces Ginger Ale

Quarter of 1 Fresh Lime – Squeezed

Place ice in highball glass. Add whiskey, orange juice and ginger ale. Squeeze quartered lime over top and drop into glass.

Ironically this picks up nutty, peanut butter notes. Orange citrus is there of course, too. Blends in right nicely.

Original drink created by Jeremy Sidener called for 3 ounces orange juice, 3 ounces ginger ale and lemon slice garnish. In my opinion this masked the Irish Whiskey beyond recognition. Taking the filler down just a notch allows the whiskey a little room to play without over doing it. Dublin 8 is a great thirst quencher.

Plan ahead. Designate sober drivers, arrange for a cab or take advantage of free rides many cities provide during holiday times. Just don’t drive buzzed.

Whiskey Quotes & Cocktails

Whiskey spans the globe in a broad range of styles, flavors and varieties. No matter where the bottle pours it seems the preferred manner of consuming the spirit is neat or on the rocks. However the vast flavor profile of each individual whiskey creates a wealth of opportunity for cocktail sampling and springboard for new creations.

A Wicked Sip

The Serpent’s Tooth cocktail is best served to those slippery devils with sharp tongue and wicked spirit.  It is best savored with sordid tales of misdeeds and misconduct of the devious sort.  Serpent’s Tooth is sure to stir the spirit, sate the soul and mislead the faint of heart. Tread carefully.

Welcome National Whiskey Sour Day with the Essential Basic Sour Recipe

Sours are one of the most challenging cocktails to nail down in proper proportion. Too much sour in the cocktail recipe and facial features distort as lips pucker to the distinct mouth watering bite in the tart flavor experience.  Adding too much sweet to the mix makes the sour drink something new altogether.  Though August 25 is earmarked as National Whiskey Sour Day it is possible to substitute a favorite base spirit for whiskey in a basic sour recipe.

Fresh Cut Limes - photo property of Cheri LoughlinBasic Sour Recipe

2 ounces Base Spirit

3/4 ounce Sour (Fresh Lemon or Lime Juice)

1 ounce Sugar or Simple Syrup

Combine ingredients in cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake hard to chill completely and create frothy texture.  Strain into an Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice.  Garnish with lemon twist or orange slice with maraschino cherry.  When shaken properly, sour and sugar combination create fizzy top to the drink without the need for added egg white.

There are stories that circulate as to how the Whiskey Sour came into play within history.  According to some, the Whiskey Sour’s creation was in direct correlation to sailors fighting scurvy due to vitamin deficiency.  Preservation of the fruit due to long periods at sea made the creation of sour drinks part of natural progression.  Another tale weaves the story of an English steward who opened a bar in a Peruvian city.  His signature drink creation became known as the sour for its tart taste.  No matter the historical record of the Whiskey Sour or how sours in general came to be established in the saga of cocktails, there are always variations to the basic sour recipe for the sheer enjoyment of flavor delight.

Top 10 Popular Shot & Shooter Recipes

Today, September 22, marks the day for the fastest drinking record; Dustin Phillips of the United States consumed a 14 ounce bottle of Ketchup through a 1/4” straw in 33 seconds flat ten years ago.  Ketchup seems a nasty ‘beverage’ to guzzle willingly, yet many enthusiastic participants flock to bars weekly to start (or end) the evening with the downing of a shot that none would eagerly sip slowly enough to take in the flavor or texture for a lingering moment on the tongue.  Admittedly there are many shot recipes that make the conversion to cocktail easily.  The Oatmeal Cookie shot is an outstanding example.

However, many prefer shots and shooters too horrid to down without holding the nose or throwing them back feverishly with a beer chaser or *gasp* water back.  I know…I mentioned the word ‘water’ in a cocktail post.  Ghastly!  Yet, there are a few recipes that make the rounds of Top Ten Shots, most searched for and ‘first one to come to mind’ when asked for best known mixed shot rather than straight liqueur (such as Jägermeister).

Buttery Nipple

1 ounce Butterscotch Schnapps

1/2 ounce Irish Cream

Pour Butterscotch Schnapps in bottom of a shot glass.  Carefully layer Irish Cream on top to float.  Shoot it!

Tweaked Buttery Nipple - adapted by Cheri Loughlin - photo property of Cheri LoughlinAt one time this was a favorite of mine, but I never could quite ‘shoot it’ due to the total sweetness of the concoction.  I would sip it warm and end up with sticky lips.  All the better with Baileys ‘Listen to Your Lips’ campaign.  But the Buttery Nipple happens to be rather nice on the rocks with a pleasant rum addition.  So, tweaking it just a bit…

Tweaked Buttery Nipple – adapted by Cheri Loughlin

1 ounce Rum

1/2 ounce Butterscotch Schnapps

1/2 ounce Irish Cream

Build in the order given over fresh ice in a rocks glass.  Add a stir stick.

Irish Car Bomb - photo from creative commons use siteIrish Car Bomb

1 pint Guinness Beer

1 shot Irish Cream

1 shot Irish Whiskey

Fill a pint glass two-thirds full of Guinness.  Fill a *double shot glass with Jameson and Baileys.  Drop the shot glass into the Guinness and chug its entirety immediately.  *Use a plastic shot glass to prevent shot glass from chipping when dropping into the glass or bumping against your teeth when chugging.

I’ve not had the best experience with Irish Car Bombs.  The realization that many people love them is astonishing since the Irish Cream curdles instantly in the beer glass.  But hey, they make the top ten listing for a reason.  It’s a popularity contest and this one wins it.

Red Headed Slut Shot - photo property of Cheri LoughlinRed Headed Slut

1 ounce Cranberry Juice

1/2 ounce Peach Schnapps

3/4 ounce Jägermeister

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a large shot glass.  Take this one fast for the sheer pleasure.

Is it the name, the taste or a little of both that get a rise out of the shot crowd?  The Red Headed Slut goes for the mix of a cocktail, yet shoots straight for excitement.

Jello Shots

2 packages Gelatin (flavor of choice)

1 cup Vodka

Mix gelatin according to package instructions, except substitute vodka for the cold water in process.  Use small plastic cups for forming gelatin into shots.  Place in refrigerator or freezer.  Whipped topping optional garnish for fun just before serving.

Jello shots are a party favorite especially around St. Patrick’s Day.  Lime becomes the flavor of the day with the green theme.  Other Jello Shot favorite gelatin flavors from Twitter and Facebook Q&A: Black Cherry, Blue Mixed Berry, Pineapple, Red and Orange.

Blow Job Shot – There are almost as many variations to this bachelorette party shot requirement as there are ways to blush while trying to order it at the bar.   You know how it goes…the most timid member of the group has to order the shot and the bartender ‘pretends’ not to hear the order four or five times until the poor girl is practically screaming for a Blow Job Shot above the rest of the crowd.  The frivolity just doesn’t stop since this shot requires the bride-to-be to find some tall, dark, handsome stranger to sit perfectly still while she places the Blow Job Shot between his knees and she takes the shot while on her knees without the use of her hands.  The party just never stops… until that is the bride-to-be decides she wants a Screaming Orgasm, but that’s really just another shot.

Mind Eraser Shot - photo property of Cheri LoughlinMind Eraser

1-1/4 ounce Coffee Liqueur

3/4 ounce Vodka

Splash Club Soda

Build over ice.  Serve with a straw.

The Mind Eraser gets placed within the shot realm, because it is supposed to be consumed with one fail swoop of a gulp through the straw.  That’s one mighty head rush.  Maybe this one should have been called Brain Freeze instead.  True story: I had a message waiting for me on the phone late one evening. “What’s the recipe for a Mind Eraser?” I get a lot of these.  Ironically, I forgot to return the phone call with the recipe.  So, here it is!

Scooby Snack

1/4 ounce Coconut Rum

1/4 ounce Crème de Bananes

1/4 ounce Melon Liqueur

1/4 ounce Pineapple Juice

1/4 ounce Half & Half

Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a shot glass.

The name Scooby Snack reminds me of Shaggy and Scooby hunting ghosts with a bag full of Scooby Snacks as reward.  However, Scooby Snack is one of those shots that easily converts into a cocktail on the rocks.  Double the amounts to make the drink 2-1/2 ounces in entirety and strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.

Purple Hooter Shot - photo property of Cheri LoughlinPurple Hooter

1 part Vodka

1 part Raspberry Liqueur

1 part Homemade Sour Mix

Splash Sprite

Combine first three ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to chill.  Strain into a pony glass.  Add splash of Sprite.  Serve.

Not too long ago a reader left a comment for me; my classic cocktails ‘sucked.’  He wanted a Purple Hooter.  Well, the classics aren’t mine.  I could only wish for the creativity of the master bartenders from so long ago.  The Purple Hooter happens to be a top ten favorite shot.  It’s beautiful and in my opinion would be much better with a little lemon, less sour and no sprite, but then again, what do I know?!

Chocolate Cake Shot - photo property of Cheri LoughlinChocolate Cake

1/2 ounce Hazelnut Liqueur

1/2 ounce Vodka

Lemon & Sugar Garnish

Coat lemon wedge with sugar.  Set aside.  Add liquid ingredients to cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake to chill.  Strain into a shot glass.  Shoot the shot and then immediately bite and suck the sugar coated lemon.

Don’t ask me why, but it works and people swear by it.  The grain of the sugar gives just the right amount of texture to this overly sweetened shot.  Remember that water from earlier?  You might want it about now.

Nuts ‘n Berries

2 parts Lemon Vodka

1 part Hazelnut Liqueur

2 parts Cranberry Juice

Place all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice.  Shake to blend and chill.  Strain into a shot glass.

This one made the top ten listing, but it sounds a bit like Kellogg’s cereal.

Shots go fast which might make one go under quicker than they think.  Alcohol content remains the same no matter how fast or slow the drink is slammed, so please consume responsibly.

21 Must Try Classic Cocktail Recipes

Martini - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

This post has been updated from The Intoxicologist Is In blog. Three more ‘Must Try Drinks’ have been added to the list. If you have suggestions, please add them to the comment section or drop a line through the email. Thanks!

Martini Fruit Background photo copyright Cheri LoughlinYou have heard about, seen it and possibly gone out and tried it yourself.  What am I talking about?  The 21 Drink Salute.  You know the one.  Turn twenty-one and it is the rite of passage to go out and drink twenty-one alcoholic drinks within the day.  This rite of passage is a bad idea for reasons too numerous to count.

However, thinking on the whole idea of people going out to drink when they turn twenty-one sets the thinking cap in motion.  They are dipping into the waters of drinking, assuming they have never imbibed before coming of age.  These newbie drinkers will try anything their buddies place before them and dare them to throw down the hatch.  Not a quality drinking experience to be sure.  But it gives one pause to think.  There certainly are a fair amount of partakers out there who drink whatever is on the cocktail menu or never veer from their tried and true standard.

Why not be like the twenty-one year old newbie and dabble in cocktails that revolutionized the cocktail as we know it?   Instead of trying them all in one day, take the time to savor the flavor.

Mockup Margarita Mocktail created by Cheri Loughlin - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinMargarita

Everyone has their version of the perfect Margarita and their favorite tequila to add to the equation.  Here is a basic recipe to build upon so you won’t have to pick up a mix from the corner grocery.

2 ounces Tequila

1 ounce Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice

1/2 ounce Triple Sec

Lime Wedge for Garnish

Salt for Rimming

Rim edge of margarita glass with salt.  Combine liquid ingredients in cocktail shaker filled two-thirds with ice.  Shake for 10 to 15 seconds.  Place ice in margarita glass.  Strain contents of shaker into margarita glass.  Garnish with lime wedge.  To upgrade this margarita use quality tequilas such as Patron Silver or Reposado and Cointreau or Grand Marnier in place of the Triple Sec.

Van Gogh Vodka Martini - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinMartini

A “real” martini doesn’t have to be difficult, yet there are so many ways to mess it up.  Stirred, shaken, up with a twist (is that a lemon or lime?), with an olive (stuffed with blue cheese, almonds, jalapeño, or pimento?) gin or vodka and did you say dirty or dry or extra dry?  Oh, so many questions.  This martini is pretty straight forward.  When you saddle up at the bar all you have to say is, “Tanqueray 10 Martini dry, up with a twist, please” and then sit back and watch an inexperienced bartender squirm and an experienced bartender do their job.  Make sure you get that “please” and “thank you” in there with a nice tip.

2-1/2 ounces Tanqueray 10 Gin

Noilly Pratt Dry Vermouth

Lemon Twist

Place ice in a martini glass.  Drizzle approximately 1/4 to 1/2 ounce of dry vermouth in the ice and set aside.  Measure out Tanqueray 10 Gin into a cocktail shaker filled one-third full of ice.  Shake or swirl the gin (depending on your theory of “bruising” the gin) for at least fifteen seconds.  Your goal is to chill the gin thoroughly.  Take the martini glass with vermouth in hand.  Swirl the glass so the vermouth coats the inside and pour out.  Do not shake the glass until every drop is gone.  Strain the contents of the cocktail shaker into the vermouth coated martini glass.  Take your lemon twist and circle it around the rim of the martini glass before placing it halfway on the edge and partially inside the gin as garnish.  Serve and drink while still chilled.
