Review: Three Olives Tomato Vodka

In theory a tomato infused vodka makes perfect sense.  For months I have had various infusions in my freezer to hammer down that perfect Bloody Mary drink sensation.  These infusion experiments have worked out rather well with peppercorns, fresh garlic, jalapeño pepper and various other spices.  But clearly it would always be nice to be able to grab a readymade vodka infusion off the liquor store shelf rather than make my own.

When word came around that Three Olives had Tomato Vodka on the way, my liquor friends in the business and I were already throwing around ideas of what would be great in it…fresh fennel, coriander seed and pink sea salt maybe.  It would possibly be great in a straight up dirty martini.  Then there is the thought of a drop of Absinthe in a tomato cocktail or Chartreuse.  Pimm’s might even be great.  What about fresh chive as a garnish?  How about fresh thyme or even dill?  The possibilities could be endless.

The Three Olives website touts:

“Mary, Mary, Mary.  The greatest drink in the world?  The “Bloody Mary” – no one knows who thought of the name but who cares?  All we know is we just love the taste of fresh tomatoes, pepper, horseradish and spices infused into Three Olives Vodka to create our very own essence of “Bloody Mary.”  Drink on the rocks, as a shot or in your favorite martini.”

Tomato Vodka Straight Up - photo copyright Cheri LoughlinAs a shot this super premium vodka is all tomato.  This is a not a roll around on the tongue to savor the flavor type of vodka.  The typical vodka drinker will not want to savor the taste, texture and feel of the Three Olives Tomato Vodka unless of course they are a huge tomato fan.  While it definitely has the aroma and essence of tomato, it lacked a certain depth in my opinion.  Possibly I would refer to it as thin, because the tomato lacked proper support from the other infused flavors.  The pepper, horseradish and spices that are infused in with the tomato vodka are nearly indistinguishable.

Recipes for this vodka were not the inventive, distinctive cocktails my fellow enthusiasts and I were hoping for.  There were of course the traditional Bloody Mary types and two others that were a bit odd to say the least.  The recipes seemed to be lacking in distinctiveness and zest.

Bloody Martini

Bloody Martini photo copyright Cheri Loughlin2 measures Three Olives Tomato Vodka

3-4 drops Hot Sauce

Dash of Spicy Bloody Mary Mix

Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass with creole spice rim.  Garnish with grape tomatoes and mozzarella ball (speared).  Chili pepper flakes optional.

The Bloody Martini fell flat. If it were not for the Stirrings Bloody Mary Rimmer this cocktail would have no flavor at all.  The cocktail is bland.  It calls for a “dash” of spicy Bloody Mary Mix.  This is a difficult measurement for the average bartender, let alone a home bartender looking up the recipe online.  Does one know what a “dash” of this or that is?  Doubtful.  Typically there are 36 dashes in an ounce.  A dash is a general term for minuscule quantities.  A person is seasoning to taste.  I put more hot sauce than the 3-4 drops and an entire half ounce (approx. 18 dashes) of spicy Bloody Mary mix into the Bloody Martini.  Neither helped add enough flavor to this cocktail.  However, Three Olives stepped up their game with a highly inventive garnish.  Too many times cocktails rely on the tried and true lime wheel, olive, or in the case of the Bloody Mary; a celery stalk for garnish.  The Bloody Martini has a clever, out of the ordinary speared grape tomato and mozzarella ball garnish.  The garnish is what makes this cocktail memorable.

Diablo Rojo

Top with Bloody Mary Mix

Add a Few Dashes of Hot Sauce and Sliced Jalapeños

Mix in a glass filled with ice and garnish with speared peppers.

The Diablo Rojo appears to be Three Olives version of the classic Bloody Mary. Going heavy on the dashes of hot sauce in this cocktail did not do enough to give this drink enough flavor. Any number of spices needed for a Bloody Mary may be found in the refrigerator or spice cabinet.  Instead of relying on a Bloody Mary mix keep Clamato or Tomato juice handy.  Then a few items from your pantry and a fresh lime for added flavor are all you need to mix your own Bloody Mary.

Morning Sunshine

1/4 measure Basil Infused Syrup

1/2 measure Orange Juice

Shake over ice.  Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.  Garnish with cherry tomato, orange wedge flag and sprig of basil.

Morning Sunshine calls for specialty syrup.  The first scent of Morning Sunshine is the overwhelming tomato.  But then the sweet hits you in the taste.  The cocktail is not too sweet; however the taste is rather odd.  It is not the basil syrup by itself or the orange juice by itself or even the Tomato Vodka alone.  It is the combination as a whole.  They do not seem to mingle as one.  Again, Three Olives came through with a unique and interesting garnish.  Morning Sunshine uses a cherry tomato, orange wedge flag garnish with sprig of basil.  This garnish is a nice diversion from the ordinary.

Tomajito

Tomajito photo copyright Cheri LoughlinMuddle 2 lime wedges, cherry tomato and basil infused syrup

Add 2 measures Tomato Vodka

Shake over ice.  Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.  Top with soda.  Garnish with a lime and cherry tomato flag.

There are a lot of varieties of Mojitos on the cocktail scene.  Honestly, I never thought I would see a Tomajito.  If you are a tomato lover, you will definitely love this one.  I think.  There is a lot of soda taste, not too sweet and most unquestionably the tomato is there.  I for one cannot get past the tomato flavor.  This garnish too added personality and color to this cocktail with the vibrant green lime and cherry tomato flag.

Three Olives Tomato Vodka in my opinion may not be a shot or on the rocks type vodka, but it has tremendous potential for a Bloody Mary.  After all, vodka and tomato are two important ingredients in a Bloody Mary cocktail are they not?  But, find a Bloody Mary recipe that suits your palate.  Give Three Olives Tomato Vodka a try.  Neither my review nor anyone else’s review can taste it for you.  Only you can do that for yourself.  If you are a serious Bloody Mary drinker, Three Olives Tomato Vodka is definitely one you should sample.

Rangtang Vodka Leaves Powdery Tang Impression

There is no doubt people love Three Olives Vodka. There are plenty of flavors for every taste preference, fun recipes for shots, shooters and cocktails and then there are the parties and contests that the brand builds up through its various social media sites. Three Olives Vodka makes going out fun, friendly and often it’s a blast from the past with forward thinking futuristic liquidity involved.

While some brands stick to a handful of flavors to quench the thirst of the masses, Three Olives has gone on to continually introduce new flavors to the market. Unfortunately launching new-fangled flavors regularly sometimes means hitting the high note of taste excellence just might go by the wayside.  Three Olives Rantang is one such flavor that misses the bar standard of taste.

Three Olives Rangtang Tasting

35% Alcohol. 70 Proof.

Color: Slight pale orange. Perhaps it is name suggestion, but this reminds me of actual Tang from days of youth – color only at this point since aroma and taste have yet to come into play.

Aroma: Orange, but not as pronounced as thought it would be. Chalky, sweet tartish. Artificial sweet smell. Thins in aroma of orange and becomes more sweet.

Taste: Over the top sweet for even flavored vodka in my opinion. Slight burn. Definite artificial taste whether flavor is natural or not. Thin orange, strong, sweet. Powdery finish.

Three Olives Rangtang Tasted Neat photo copyright Cheri LoughlinBest feature about this Three Olives flavor: The bottle packaging with its lovely martini logo in purple contrasted against the orange liquid. Recipes for Rangtang include a straight shot served chilled and a mix of Rangtang with lemon-lime soda. Hardly original, hardly creative; but it will make someone shoot it fast or cover the powdery artificial taste as much as possible so they can take another round and enjoy the party a while longer.

Fun notation: Tang was originally marketed in 1957 as an orange-flavored breakfast drink.  It was powdered with a sweet and tangy flavor.  Years later NASA used Tang to flavor water which had a funny aftertaste. It wasn’t until NASA took Tang to outer space that the powdered concoction took off in sales. Just goes to show – sometimes a product’s success begins with marketing.

Something Three Olives usually does well with its flavors is bring back memories. There is always a blast from the past whether it is recalling stacking root beer float mugs at the local A&W drive-in, playing board games while sipping a Grape Nehi or seeing how many wads of bubble gum it would take to blow the largest bubble. This time Rangtang reminds me of pulling a can of Tang from the cabinet and scooping the powdery substance into a variety of liquids just to see what it might taste like mixed with different things. The taste; always orangy, always powdery, but I was an inquisitive Intoxicologist from the start.

Three-O Bubble Vodka Bubbles Over with Cocktails

Three Olives Bubble Vodka practically smacks with delighted fun entertainment.  The aroma is that of fruity bubble gum youth.  Consumers chill it and shoot it, mix it with cream soda or add splashes of fruit juice to vamp it up to cocktail worthy status.  For more delicious treats and delectable goodies wrapped in a cocktail glass try a few Three-O Bubble Vodka shots and cocktail recipes served Intoxicologist style.  The cocktails and shots found below were whipped up during the course of the Three-O Bubble review along with the Blowing Bubbles cocktail.

Blueberry Bubble is quite bubbly delicious with blueberry flavor and candy-like appeal.  It is sweet of course, but this parties to the beat of a carefree crowd.  Fun, fruity, sporting good fun.  Makes a great Girl’s Night Out cocktail with it’s beautiful hue and girlishly fun appeal.

Place layer of ice in bottom of glass.  Add three or four blueberries.  Continue layering process until glass is full of layered ice and blueberries.  Add liquids to glass in order given leaving the Blue Curacao as last ingredient to pour as the ‘float’ for the ‘Boo-Berry’ effect.

The look of the Boo-Berry Bubble drink reminds me of the Boo-Berry cereal from the days of childhood with the monster on the cereal box.  It’s whimsical, playful, fun; but don’t choke on the blueberries!  The Boo-Berry Bubble drink recipe is perfect for Halloween themed drink recipes with the name, but anytime with ease of preparation and flavor.  It is merely a slight variation on the Blueberry Bubble drink recipe above; however this one goes long for lasting refreshment since it is built in a tall glass.

Great combination aroma of bubbly peach!  Pink Peach Bubble contains great Bubble flavor with a touch of peach in the background rounding out any hard edges cranberry juice can sometimes leave behind.  Beautiful pink color is perfect for Pink themed parties, Girl’s Night Out and Bachelorette parties.

Garnish: Maraschino Cherries

Remember the sugary syrup rush of those first few chews of delicious bubble gum before the flavor died away?  Bubble Delicious tastes exactly like the first fifteen seconds of fresh bubble gum.  This time the flavor lasts through the entire drink.  That might roll off a little too sweet for some, but there is a reason there are so many sweet drinks served from cocktail menus (and bubble gum for that matter).

Three Olives Grape Vodka: Stirring Up Memories

Remember Pixie Stix, the powdered candy that comes packaged in multi-colored wrappers that resemble drinking straws?  Their varietal of flavors is beginning to remind me of something else; Three Olives Vodka.  This is not meant to be an unflattering comparison, but rather an observance that came to me last night as the Three Olives Grape flavor wafted up from the tasting glass to jostle my memory to the days of ten year old bliss.  You know the days…carefree times before the teenage years of angst set in and high school loomed with decisions soon settling on the shoulders of “What Shall I Be?” when I grow up.  For those of you too young to relate, “What Shall I Be?” was a board game for girls with careers for the future (ie: nurse, stewardess, ballet dancer, teacher, actress or model).  Times have changed and girls have so many more choices with more role models to shape their future as well.  Thank goodness for change, advancement and of course variety.Three Olives Grape Vodka - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin

Three Olives Vodka never disappoints when it comes to variety.  When Three Olives launched Three-O Cherry and Three-O Grape in 2001 the flavored vodka market ignited bringing the flavored martini to a whole new level.  Three-O Bubble flavored vodka created the same frenzy with consumers looking for the newest mixer to splash in with their juicy fruit flavored vodka.  Three Olives may be serious about the quality of their vodka, but their flavor variety is all about fun and frivolity in a cocktail.  Three Olives seemingly creates vodka with the goal of celebrations, excitement and enjoyable experiences with friends.  Quite possibly it is the reason behind such flavors of Root Beer, Chocolate and Grape.

Three Olives Grape

Aroma: Essentially sweet grape like that of Pixie Stix.  There is no alcohol burn on the nose.Three Olives Grape Vodka - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin 300

Flavor: This does not taste the least bit like fresh grapes.  It resembles grape soda pop without the fizz and sugar.  However, the grape flavor is replicated so well the imagination can almost duplicate the sense of sweetness one tastes in Grape Nehi Soda from the aroma alone.  The base vodka stands up well with the ultimate quality of Three Olives premium vodka.  It has medium body that rounds out on the palate without harshness.

Thoughts: Sampling this particular flavor left me with fond memories of penny candy, slumber parties with friends and playing outside barefoot as a kid.  It is amazing the small taste and scent of a vodka flavor can do that simple thing.  While sometimes I scan the shelf and think what in the world some companies are thinking with so many flavors and what in the world could possibly be done with some of the flavors they choose to release; now I know.  Sometimes it isn’t about a perfectly layered cocktail.  Sometimes it is about a simple cocktail with Sprite, Ginger Ale or Soda mixed in to make to make it fizz and then one’s own memory and friends to chat and make up the rest of the good time.

Keep Up with Three Olives Vodka O-Face Contest with the Cherry-O-Punch

One of the featured flavors for the Three Olives O-Face campaign was Cherry.  The aroma leans more toward that of black cherry with a little sharpness rather than a lot of sweet.  There is virtually no burn in the nose as Three Olives seems to be a rather clean vodka.  Tasted neat it remains as clear and clean as the Three O Cherry with Shot - photo copyright Cheri Loughlinaroma represents.  Three Olives Cherry Vodka remains smooth, slightly sweet as vodka tends to be with a hint of dark chocolate cherry.  There is no alcohol burn even sipped at room temperature.  It soothes the throat as it slips down with thorough progression.  Since I mention the slight sweetness on the tip of the tongue and this is a flavor infused vodka I will mention it is not sugared vodka such as liqueur is obviously sweetened.  Many vodkas contain a hint, degree or fade of sweetness in the initial taste.

As with all Three Olives Vodkas the ultimate goal is satisfaction, an ultimate O-Face for ‘O’bvious pleasure and delighted amusement.  Create your ultimate O-Face for stimulating party fun and entertain with the Cherry-O Punch, easily mixed for individual cocktails or punch style for parties.Cherry-O-Punch - photo copyright Cheri Loughlin
